President Obama had a book thrown at him at a rally in Philidelphia yesterday. It sailed right past his head and he didn't even notice. Here's the video:

Contrast that with President Bushes nimble reaction when a shoe was thrown at him:

And here's the video of that. Say what you want about Bush, but he's certainly got good reflexes:

As if that wasn't enough, a streaker was also arrested at the same rally!

It missed by feet, behind him.

You guys can't even throw accurately.

Although the expression of contempt - a book, the Tea Party equivalent of a dirty shoe - was well chosen.

You forget that the book thrower is, as of yet, unidentified.

Sorry: I had to drop because of the title. I had to know: Did the streaker throw the book? Was the book arrested? What other wierd parts happened?

Anyway, the wife tells me that the book thrower was actually an Obama fan, so I looked it up. Apparently:

Sort of a funny picture though: one does hate politicians. Although when someone threw a shoe at Bush, it felt like throwing a shoe at a mentally incompetent. Because that's what it was.

Or, in another question, when are Americans going to get past this fucking idiotic bilateral political hatred? Will you ever? So. Fucking. Pointless.

I've been wondering the same thing Geoff. You can tell we're scraping from the bottom of the barrel when we got threads like these.

    Strangeness.

Other questions spring to mind: the naked guy, specifically. Apparently Alki David from battlecams.com was going to pay him $1 million to streak near the President as advertising. To get paid?

Additionally, I'm given to understand he actually also had to be within about 10 feet of Obama, and had to shout out "battlecams.com" six times. ...how in the hell is that even remotely possible? Forget the "hey I'm showing up naked to an Obama rally" part for a moment: he has to run naked up to Obama, then shout a pointless website name six times. If he was able to yell it more than once before being piled on and/or shot by the Secret Service, I'd have been amazed. What a sucker bet.

You are wrong as usual. He did notice it. Actually, his reflexes are so good, that it took him only 5 nanoseconds to identify the object (not a grenade, not a knife, just a book) so he didn't even break his smile.

    That's how GODD he is!!!

Could it be because it was behind/side of him and he was distracted?

Why are you making it seem like he was bad for not noticing? How about we test it out. I stand behind you and throw a book at your head while you are distracted and we'll see if it hits you or if you duck?

Unless you are some freak with actual eyes in the back of your head, then you could not know.

The shoe was thrown at his head, front on, as in he saw the guy swing his arm back and throw the shoe at him and ducked.

And are you seriously starting a thread to make this comparison?

What's going to be next? Compare how they brush their teeth? How many squares of toilet paper each use when they go to the loo?

So he threw a book he wrote because he wanted to be noticed by the president? I don't know what to do with this. Is he facing any jail?

    Bells,

You're taking this too seriously. How often does the president of the United States have something thrown at him during a speech? And how often is a presidential speech interupted by a streaker? How about both events occuring during the same speech?

It's just a story about an unusual event with the Bush comparison thrown in for fun.

Come on mad, please don't try to equate the book thrower to the shoe thrower. The book wasn't thrown with any malcontent.

The man, who was not named, was described by Donovan as an "over exuberant" supporter who wanted the president to read a copy of a book he had written.

  17. ya after reading this I realized that the one thing to get out of this that the Iraqis throw better than us Americans. Son of a bitch, why the fuck did that book have to miss his face!!! It should've hit him straight on!!!!!!!!

I doesn't look like a "book". More a "booklet". Bigger than a leaflet, but still capable of aerodynamic inaccuracy in the wind.
The danger remains prevalent that one can get to the President with a poison-darted paper airplane...The perp deserved a good tackle.

A poison-darted airplane....bizarre concept. Could be a good 70's-style spy novel in that.

I'd like to peer into the explicit overfunctionalist mind that thought "Well, I can't get close enough to the president to get his signature, so I'll just throw the book at him from here. I'm sure he'll implicitly understand the meaning of my actions."
