    I'm a blackbelt.

seriously though, I have a relatively young Beech bonsai, has about a 2.5 inch diameter trunk and currently has hugely out of proportion red leaves.

I work in a nursery by the way. (the plant nursery that is. You'd be dazzled at the amount of people who congratulate a willing 17 year old who has time for young children...)

It's insanely easy. Plant a plant, just after the start of the season of new growth (spring for most plants, but summer for some, and sometimes but rarely autumn or winter) take it out of its pot, trim off 2/3 of its roots (mostly the little branch parts, not the main parts), and 2/3 of its leaves. Be sure that you do this after it starts growth/blossoming, but way before it finishes.

Other than that, it depends on the plant. Some need watering every day, some need watering every once in a while.

As for shaping--it's usually best to wait about 5 years for most plants. Personally, I don't think I want to shape my bonsai unless they start to have problems (ie growing in directions that might make them fall over)

Captain crunch/ first comb the roots then trim but dont go mad take it easy mainly it's the longer roots that need clipping, also use unglazed pots to pot the tree in.

Captain crunch if you want to start i will only be to happy to help you on your way, you have made a start with growing trees, citrus is a good tree to grow and train as a bonsai, a bonsai is a small tree not all of them flower, and you can take the shapes from nature as if you look closely at the trees in nature you will find some good bonsai.
