View Full Version : Blue Ghost
Orleander 11-13-07, 10:30 AM I can't believe this was on our news last night. Anyways, I thought maybe it was ball lightning, but then it hovered, so....
I have no idea.
Anyone??
ghost caught on camera> (http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=f0a_1194910356)
Crunchy Cat 11-13-07, 10:56 AM It's a bug crawling on the camera lens. Video cameras only have one point of focus and things that are up close only show as a blur with a bit of translucency on the edges.
Orleander 11-13-07, 11:00 AM no, I'm not believing it was a bug on the lens. I've seen pics like that before and it looked NOTHING like this.
If you can find comparable film, I would love to see it.

I would hate for you to have to believe in general. The reason pictures / videos of blurry up-close things are not found is... well... they are bad pictures / videos and nobody would want to post them.
However, here is how you can reproduce the behavior. Take one video camera, focus it to 20+ feet out, and place an insect on the lens (an ant for example).
If you don't have a video camera, go to a WalMart and bring a small piece of colored paper. Put the paper on the lens of one of their video camera demo models and take a look.
Orleander 11-13-07, 11:16 AM why is it blue?
Crunchy Cat 11-13-07, 11:23 AM Some insects are blue (permanently or at different stages of their development).

please show me a pic of a blue bug in Ohio this time of year.
Crunchy Cat 11-13-07, 11:55 AM Blue Bottle Flies (for example) aren't restricted to a particular season (feel free too look up their life-cycle to confirm). Here is a generic picture of one:

If you would like a picture of one in Ohio during the winter season explicitly, I would be happy to explain a way to travel to Ohio and take a picture.
Orleander 11-13-07, 12:16 PM LOL, it says right under the pic that the color has been altered. :)
Crunchy Cat 11-13-07, 12:21 PM Specifically it says:
"Colour selection but the fly really WAS this colour blue". Here is an alternative picture:

Nikelodeon 11-13-07, 12:23 PM lens flare.
It was definitely a bug crawling on the camera lens..
It's too obvious.. lol :roflmao:
Nikelodeon 11-13-07, 01:07 PM firefly convention.
spidergoat 11-13-07, 01:25 PM Idiot convention.
Sorry Orleander, I apologize. But it is obvious, you can see it walking across the lens. You can even see the legs moving as it walks.

But what is it?!
If its a bug, what bug?? I want to know what blue bug hangs around Ohio in November.
Crunchy Cat 11-13-07, 03:17 PM The image is too blurry to identify the bug; however, I have already given an example of one bug which can be found at any time of the year in Ohio.
Squeak22 11-13-07, 03:20 PM It's not necessarily a blue insect, it just has to be shiny. Depending on the type of lights, the reflected light off the bug (combined with the far focus) could have created the blue blur that you see.
Crunchy Cat 11-13-07, 03:29 PM Thats true squeak. I think I might have ID'd the bug oddly enough. I did a little research and apparently wooly aphids mate in the winter and are all over Ohio.

Orleander 11-13-07, 04:16 PM oooo, crunchy cat. I think I can go with that aphid. thanks!

That could well be it Cat, but I thought I saw it's abdomen bend like in silverfish. I'm not saying it's a silverfish btw lol

The first thought that came to mind when I saw the video was 'silverfish', so we both saw the same bending. Looking at it again, I noticed the bend was very slight and the dimensions of the bug appeared too short for a silverfish. Once I found the wooly aphid, I could see how 'hind wool' might drag a little and create a slight bending effect.
I can't be 100% sure either way, but if I were a betting man, I would place my bets on the aphid.

Yep, seems to be the best explanation yet.
Makes me curious as to what diameter the lens has, can't be more than half an inch if the bug is a wooly aphid..
Crunchy Cat 11-13-07, 05:11 PM Yep it's probably one of those small quick-e-mart cam's :).

Makes sense :)
may be it wanted to compere prices on gas

'May be' is spelled maybe. 'Compere' is spelled compare.
About this 'ghost', I do not for one moment believe that was a true spirit. First off, there's simply no way to truly know without actually being there. Secondly, the blue effect that was caught on film could be any one of a number of things..
The most compelling evidence that it was not a ghost, to me, come from the fact that it did not move for half an hour.
Now, I have never met a ghost to my knowledge, but is it really logical to think that it, the ghost, would remain stationary for that long?
Go with the fly or the aphid. Hell, even some sort of debris is possible.
cosmictraveler 11-25-07, 09:52 PM Could also be someone just altering the video with some special effects,
after all anything is possible today.

Why did you do that??? How anal can you be?

LOL, yeah, the most compelling evidence to me is that they don't exist.
