View Full Version : Blackout from thinking?

Every so often I will stand and look at someone or something. I will allow whatever it is to amaze me that it is actually happening (like reality is real). In some way I convince myself that it is not a dream. At the moment I make the realization, I temporarily (maybe for 3 seconds) blackout (like my vision turns black and I loose consciousness, even though I never faint). What is the cause of this? Or better yet, is this even a well known thing?

your vision turns black and you lose consciousness? Doesn't sound normal to me.

Sometimes I "lose" consciousness too when I am deep in thought; I stop thinking and become unaware of my surroundings or get lost in my day dreams.. its a sign of my genius anyhow - don't know about you.

Sometimes when we just stand in awe at something I think it can be very humbling. I remember when I was younger just staring out of a car window at some bushes by the side of the road. I remember getting lost in the intracies of the branches and leaves in such a simple thing, like I had never really seen a bush before. It took my breath away as I sat their in silence, in awe at the beauty in simple stuff. I didn't black out but I can imagine being regulary overwhelmed if I let my mind be completely still so that it could absorb everything around me properly.
I suggest that you meditate quietly in a safe environment, bringing your mind to that point of stillness with a degree of self control. Then if you are captivated in a non safe enviroment, your mind will be used to dealing with the sensations and you probably will be able to use the self control you have learnt in meditation to keep yourself from passing out.
I would say however that if these episodes seem to happen without your initial input or will, then you may be having some kind of precursor to epilepsy in which case you probably need to discuss it with your doctor.

Maybe this is a tumor or an embolus or something? You should get it checked out.

Well I mean there are times I forget about my surroundings and get lost in daydreams. Those are fine with me. Also there are times when I am in such awe at things I see everyday, like I have never seen something so wonderful in my life (like just how amazing it is that a ball rolls down a hill). Just every once in a while I convince myself I am not dreaming.. and at this realization I temporarily lose my vision, like I said, for only 3 seconds or so. Might it be that a part of my brain burns so much glucose at this time that my eyes do not get enough? And that some other part of my brain responsible for taking in the world doesn't get enough? I mean, I do not pass out or get weak in my legs to fall over.

And this only happens like maybe once ever 2 weeks.

I have never heard of anything like this before. Are you sure you are actually losing your vision, the same as if you closed your eyes, or are you simply unaware of what you are seeing. I can certainly 'gaze into space' with my mind fixed on some other reality, temporarily unaware of my surroundings.
You might want to mention it to your doctor, just to be on the safe side.

it has happened to me as well.. il e walking along and then suddenly i will be in a trance either thinking about something and not realising anything aroundme apart from what i am thinking about! happened today while walkingback home. i was thinking about martial arst and then suddenly i was stuck in a vision where i was fighting some people and i had walked for about 3 minutes and actually not realised taht i was . i was sub conciously walking butthiking about something else....

this has hapeend bfore and not just temporary .. in fact it happens ofetn but while i am actualy doing something that requires you to have to think and so on!

as for teh scientific explanation... i dont think it has to do with the brain not having enough glucose.. i had eaten before hand and i was walking so y circulation was fine. its probably from the nervous syetm failing to interpret signals from certain stimuli and inhibiting systems from working fully. its an amateur expanation but it seems liek it could do wiht more research!

It sounds as though you may have a form of narcolepse.

It sounds as though you may have a form of narcolepse.
That sounds like a good explanation. When you try and regain your vision how long does it take? Because if it was some kind of chemical imbalance it seems like it would take a second to return fully.

maybe you simply stop recording visual data to your brain, which should make you able to immediately regain your vision. when I played basketball in high school I wouldn't hear anything but what players said, and when I would shoot free throws my hearing would come back like someone just turned up the volume and I would hear the cheerleaders and fans again. I assume its simply because my brain didn’t care about that sound because I was so focused.

I have some experiences when am I doing some kind of automatic action, like walking, and I am completely thinking about something else. I've never lost my vision, though. I don't think that's normal :O

I've had this blackout happen to me before. I also have had my head shudder sometimes when in very deep thought. Also, anotheressence, I have done those automatic things myself. The human mind and body are very intricate, complex, and definitely puzzling. I am glad I am not the only one to have had these things happen to me before. I think it only happens to the most intellectual bunch though. But even still, some very intellectual people have told me they never had that happen to them. Weird huh?

I have similar things happen to me. One second I can be deep in thought, next second I suddenly stop thinking, and then find out 5 minutes went past without knowing what happened during that time.

Absane, I think you need to seek medical help.

Why is everyone in the mindset that Absane needs some sort of medical attention?

I think I know exactly what he's talking about. Absane, ye'r concentrating so hard on one thing (a thought) that yer concentration shifts away from everything else, like yer vision. I experience it all the time. I doubt ya need to see a medical professional.

Why ask a forum full of non-specialists about something like this ? Either consult
a professional or let it go.
