View Full Version : Birds: They Came from Fish. Cardin 05-21-08, 01:02 PM Japanese Flying Fish (http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2008/05/21/von.japan.flying.fish.ap) spidergoat 05-21-08, 03:26 PM If there were some food in the sky, perhaps insects, I could see fish evolving into true flight. They would need to have a skin that couldn't dry out. Enmos 05-21-08, 03:28 PM :bugeye: There IS food in the sky.. Anyway, I think it's much more likely they evolved 'flying' to escape predators. Many fish jump out of the water to escape predators, these fish may just have taken it a step further. spidergoat 05-21-08, 03:32 PM That's what I mean, they are flying to escape predators, but if they also happened to find a food source in the sky, which gave an advantage to fish that could fly longer, they might evolve into true flight. I guess there are some birds in the sky, but a fish would need to be heaviers to catch one, and even sea birds tend to live near the shore. Ok, but fish do not have the required morphology to say the least. There are insects across open water. So the fish might evolve to catch those. However, I think that feeding method would require too much energy from the fish. They can get their food easier in the water. It's an interesting thought though and not all that weird. Given enough time and the right circumstances these fish might actually evolve in that direction somewhat. Although I don't see it happen that they would evolve into proper airborne animals. Fish just seem too specialized to an aquatic environment, with their gills and all. But you never know. It happened before ;) Enmos 05-21-08, 03:44 PM Cluster, I was looking forward to your post.. :( Bradley364 05-21-08, 03:50 PM Why yes.....birds did come from fish, you did too, but only after all the other evolutionary stages had taken place. clusteringflux 05-21-08, 04:21 PM Cluster, I was looking forward to your post.. :( I only post about 20% of the of what I want to post. It's better that way. Btw, are you a mod or something? How did you know I was viewing? |
