Bird flu toll rises past 100-mark

Millions of birds have been culled in an effort to curb the virus

The world's human death toll from bird flu has reached 103 since late 2003, the World Health Organization has said.

The latest deaths from the H5N1 strain occurred in Azerbaijan, where five have died since February, the WHO reported.

The virus cannot pass easily from one person to another but there are fears it could mutate, triggering a pandemic.

US scientists have confirmed the H5N1 virus has evolved into two genetically distinct strains, potentially increasing the risk to humans.

The team from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also said this could complicate the search for an effective vaccine.

    In other developments:

    * Egypt reports a fourth suspected case of bird flu in humans

Bird flu 'causes first dog death'

Bird flu cases have been discovered along the Caspian Sea coast

A stray dog has died of bird flu in the Caspian nation of Azerbaijan, health officials have said - thought to be the first time the virus has killed a dog.

"US scientists have confirmed the H5N1 virus has evolved into two genetically distinct strains, potentially increasing the risk to humans."

The chances of bird flu mutating to humans has been increased by 50%, & now our trusted dog fido is in on it to.

Let the mass culling begin, but where, who?

Which country is going to be the 1st bird flu lottery unlucky winner, my money is on europe, as it has mutated most there.

If you have any shares in airlines, dump them, flying is going to be banned soon.

    What gave you that idea?

When you say "most", you mean "once", of course. There are only two strains, according to your own articles.

    Scaremongering.

Well i am not a rocket scientist, you may have guessed that by my posts, but if you have 2 strains then the chance of one of them mutating to us must be twice as much, and the fact that it has jumped another species barrier, this time a dog for the first time, suggests we are getting closer to our makers.

As for airline stock, whichever country is the winner in the bird flu stakes, will be isolated i hope, allowing no flights to leave or enter.

We are not taking SARS here, where you had a 66% of surviving, bird flu's strike rate in humans is 88% , thats only a 12% chance of surviving it, that is a killing machine by any standards.

    "Scaremongering"

I am not a scarecrow james, i consider that a insult to a knighted member, i will report you to the moderator for that.

I agree with James on this one.

At the moment there is no H5N1 strain which can be transmitted from one human to another. That is what some people are pissing themselves about. A virus like H5N1 is can be quite nasty if a human catches it. A virus which could spread from human to human might be nasty.

'Could could could'. Everyone worries and bitches about what 'could' happen. However, they fail to realize two things:

    1. The likelihood of H5N1 mutating into a contagious killer virus is small. The media loves to blow things out of proportion. Remember the Foot and Mouth Disease? And SARS? And Legionaires disease? The media is like the little boy who cries 'Wolf'. It whips everyone into a frenzy so that it can push its ratings up.
If you are still shitting yourself over a POTENTIAL non-existent virus harming you (while conveniently ignoring ACTUAL viruses which can quite easily kill you, such as HIV and malaria), then read this:
    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5183999

    2. And even if a human-to-human H5N1 does pop up, there is very little that you can do about it. Tamiflu is not as effective as the media touts, and there is a gross shortage of it anyway.

As I mentioned in another thread, instead of bitching about what 'might' happen, eat your vitamins, you whiny retards. Pull your heads out of your collective asses and realize that life itself is full of dangers.
How can you worry about a 'potential' killer virus, when hundreds of thousands are killed in automobile accidents each year? Do you piss yourself when you cross a road? No? Then stop whining about H5N1, because the odds of you dropping dead due to a mutated strain of virus which doesn't yet exist are quite small.

And let's face it. Disease is a wonderful way to reduce the Earth's population. Such a reduction in Earth's population is well overdue. We are in serious need of a culling. Starvation and disease are Nature's ways of telling humans to "STOP FUCKING".

    From your link:

Dr. Marc K. Siegel is the author of the new book Bird Flu

"In making his case for an honest appraisal of the dangers, Siegel cites progress in vaccine work and improved living conditions world-wide as two improvements that should make an epidemic far less deadly than that of 1918."

progress in vaccine work, it is well known in medical fields once it mutates to human form, it is going to take months or even a year to get a vaccine to it, by which time most of the planet will have it, at the minute we are second guessing it with tamiflu, which is already not working in some cases.

    "improved living conditions world-wide"

Living conditions are worse for spread of bird flu, as proved with SARS it spread from hong kong to canada & other countries with ease thanks to air travel, not available in 1918 to the extent it is now, & also our population has increased so how does he fathom that, everthing is highrise now perfect for infecting hundreds or thousands in one building.

The way this flu has spread through the bird world, there will be no stopping it once we get it, & with media & tv & the panic that will go with it.

No mountain hairtrigger Dr. Marc K. Siegel is nothing more than a quack doctor, & should stick to feeding ducks at the park, and leave the doctoring to me.

IF ANYONE GETS SICK... eat alot of raw garlic... it works.

it stimulates your immune system to respond... and causes a fever.. even if you dont have one.. when sick... it will make it happen.

i have been doing so for over 10 years.. and i have gotten really sick many times..

but no germ can handle a garlic ridden body... and ive always recovered so rapidly.. that i am still amazed at its effectiveness.

once i had a lung infection... it hurt to breathe.... i ignored it.

within 2 hours... i could barely breathe... it felt like a white hot fire was in my upper lungs with each breath... i thought i was going to die.

    it was getting so bad...

i went immediately to a store... bought garlic and some drink...
i eat about half a bulb... alot of garlic.. raw... eating it with the juice.. so i dont taste the garlic...

and i waited in my car... breathing lightly...

in 1/2 hour... the pain reduced...
in one hour... i was ok again...

by 3-4 hours... it was barely noticable.. and the next day.. gone.

    garlic works..

it is better to smell bad than to feel bad...

so if your sick... eat it... and if you wont.. then i have no pity for you when you die.

I would have at least went and stood outside of the emergency room in case the garlic didn't work. 2 things I never mess around with when it comes to medical problems; family joules and lungs.

Don't you think that if garlic really was a cure-all wonder drug, doctors would have noticed by now?

several doctors.... which i have personnaly talked to have stated plainly.. they know 100's of their patients who swear by it.. and studies show that it works because it really does stimulate your immune system to respond... it works.

they know it... but doctors dont prescribe garlic... they sell drugs.
    garlic.. is competition...

if people all eat garlic.. they might not go to the doctor, and they dont want to recommend to people that garlic is all they need.. for in many cases.. people might aviod doctors.. as i do.

im not saying, don't go to the doctor...

but eat the garlic first.. and then go...

and if doctors and hospitals are not convient or availble,,,,

for your sake.. try the garlic.. it cant kill you.
