    Hello to all
I really need quick answer for this

Not so long ago my XP based PC was attacked by a worm which disabled my antivirus and infected many files. I have reinstalled my antivirus (McAfee 6.02), and 'cleaned' all infected files, but most of them kept malfunctioning so I deleted them. But one thing persisted: Everytime I tried to execute an installer file, it took forver just to setup the process. Why?
Please answer it soon! This is important!

Let me get this straight, you deleted a whole bunch of files and something is not working any more? Correct?

The solution then becomes one of:-

    reinstall the PC or,
install Linux to stop the virus problem.

Yes, I deleted some files but they are totally unassociated to Windows, they're just like exe files but not crucial for XP system.
Also, the one which starts troubling me is that it takes a long time just to start an exe file like installation, but this is oddly not whole...

Basic rule of debugging a problem, if something works and now doesn't, what changed? You've had a virus, it's mucked about and you deleted some files, now something does not work. Go figure.

As a basic starting point run the install then go to Task Manager and look what processes are running. If memory serves there should be a 'wowexec' or 'wow' process. Try stopping that and see if it cures the problem.

Still say that a repair may be in order. If you boot from the XP disk it starts a new install. After a while it prompts you to say 'XP is already installed, so you want to try and repair. It will not overwrite anything and may fix a few things. Got me out of a few holes in the past.

    Hello again

I have repaired my XP, but something is still wrong, and I have one other question
    1) Everytime I start an installation of 'hgih softwares' which uses Install Shield Wizard, it takes millenia to start the installation itself. What's wrong now, and how to fix it?
    2) When I ran the XP installation CD, theres's an option of Repairing from recovery (I don't remember, but it's one of the first choices I was offered). There, the system asked for the administrator's password and to my surprise my password didn't work? Why? I've never set a BIOS password, though actually I have once reinstalled my Windows.

Admin password is only needed when you try to access recovery console or boot in safe mode. To repair an installed XP from boot CD, no password is needed.
