Actually, back in the day, many women would die at child birth or would not be able to conceive and nothing could be done about that, while people tried to have as many children as they could. So, back up plans were needed, and examples of those are in the Bible, yes. This continued through the Middle Ages, too. There are sex stories in which wrong-doings are punished. If people tried to actually read the text without any prejudice it would have been better.
