View Full Version : Beyond what you Know!
Morteza Olangui 08-23-03, 10:05 AM Hi everybody!
Under "beyond what you know", I am going to talk about facts about contemporary Iran. Mostly facts that might be of interest to you. Any question that might not be interpreted and labeled as epionage by retarded agents of secret services and fundamentalist judiciaries is welcome and I will be honored to answer:
There are six tv chnells in Iran. All are state-controlled. Chanel one is a nationwide station. It addresses people of all walks of life. Chanel two adresses mostly the audience in major cities. Chanel three, addresses the young generation and mostly deals with sport issues. Those behind the Chanel four are concerned with political , intelectual and religious issues. They always support the ruling Idealogy which is Islam. Chanel five is concerened with issues about people in the capital Tehran and its suburbs. Chanel six is a News chanel and political comments. It broadcast news footage made by its correspondents around the world and global tv stations and news agencis.
No woman is allowed to appear on tv without a head scarf. No sexual scene is seen on Iranian tv. Some well off people have sattlite dishes and tune to mostly US-backed farsi stations from los angeles. Foreign movies and tv series like "navaro" and "poiro" are broadcast. Of course they are scencored. thanks
Pollux V 08-23-03, 11:31 AM The situation here isn't that great either.
There are two news channels here, CNN and FNC. They are cable channels, the network channels, of which there are only four--ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, have a news program every day on at about six for half an hour. CNN and FNC show news for the entire day.
American Conservatives seem to identify with FNC while liberals and moderates go with CNN. Neither station gives a clear picture of what is happening in the world, I've heard it's like stepping into another world when you travel outside of North America and turn on the TV. CNN and FNC have virtually the same programming, only FNC makes a point of showing less of it. The one thing I like about the two are the political debate shows, like Crossfire (on CNN--more liberal) and O'Reilly (on FNC--more conservative). Bill O'Reilly himself is a moron, and I'd just like to mention that his hands are freakishly enormous.
The bottom line is that, except for little bits and pieces here and there, the American television news media is biased toward the right, which really just means that less news gets to the people watching the tele. There is hardly a forseeable difference between CNN and FNC, you could have two TVs in the same room with either channel turned on and get the same news almost word for word. The political power is really with the media, not the government, which means that for now America is safetly cradled in the hands of conservatives.

Bebelina 08-23-03, 03:01 PM Morteza, do people in general in Iran feel that they are being manipulated by media? Or is it only the well educated that question it?
Pollux V 08-23-03, 10:15 PM don't you get Al-Jazeera via sat
I heard that they were going to put it on sooner or later. But I haven't seen it yet, so....
Bill O'Reilly himself is a moron, and I'd just like to mention that his hands are freakishly enormous.

Oh come on Bebelina, media manipulation of the un-washed isn't just confined to those L'ill ol' oppressed backwaters in the Mideast.

Morteza Olangui 08-24-03, 12:52 PM Babelina:
Hi
People here are content with the papers and other media. They think the media are on the path of the state`s policies and that gives them a kind of relief.
They donot know whether they are manipulated or not. You know it is a delicate matter. They have different opinions but they are all united and have one say about the interests of the country.
The educated people here are almost busy with their daily life.
They have to make a living and I assure you politics are not their prior issue.
Iranian tv programs lack enough entertainmet. This issue is a matter of discontent.
For many Iranians, even those in the media, the Supreme leader say the last word. Thanks
Morteza Olangui 08-25-03, 12:53 AM [QUOTE][i] posted by Dearprudence Ladan and Laleh... what did they really symbolize to the Iranian psyche? And what did their deaths do to that psyche? It seemed to me then, that for a short while, Iranians were sociologically closer to the global village...
HI Dearprudence:
I think you are right , Iranians were closer to the global village. Before Laleh and laden go to Singapore, there was no mention of them in the news. But as soon as it was annouced they were going to have an operation, they became the focus of attention.
Most people sympathised with them and they prayed fro them. For me, they were two brave girls who didnot want to keep on living like that. They chose to die bravely. what do you think the death of two human beings like them would do to Iranian psche?
They had eight years of war and a lot of people got killed in the battlefields. thanks:)
Morteza Olangui 08-25-03, 01:02 AM Hi;
Did you know that there are just four English newspapers in Iran. They are Kayhan International - run by hardliners- Iran News, Iran Daily and Tehran Times.
All of them are published in Tehran, the capital.
One of my colleages belives they are all member of the "wind party" - a word for word translation.
They are waiting to see from which direction the wind blows and the they decide. In other words they are opportunists.
During the regime of the late Shah of Iran, there was a French newspaper called Journal de Teheran. Thanks:)
spuriousmonkey 08-25-03, 01:22 AM how is the science in Iran?
newspapers and tv are for the common people after all.
Morteza Olangui 08-25-03, 01:51 AM hi Spurious
Undesirable. Buraucracy is a problem. We have social problems here and as those who are engaged in scientific reaserch are educated and are not well-recieved, we have the brain drain problem.
We lack institutinos with enough capitals which are not suitable for those who wan to work in Iran. So they leave the country.
The private section is not active in the scientific section.
But at times you see student who take part in Olypiades and come back with prizes.
That is all I can say. thanks
