View Full Version : Best web browser?
Zardozi 03-22-07, 07:55 PM Looking for recomendations for an internet browser. I use explorer and netscape navigator 8.1 which is my preference but have been told and been recently experiencing browser problems. SO what is a good browser with autofill and bookmark modifiable toolbar.
whats out there besides firefox?
Syzygys 03-22-07, 09:46 PM I have both Opera and Firefox and I use Opera
darksidZz 03-22-07, 09:58 PM The best browser has to be Internet Explorer. This is because it runs almost any activex control, has the most compatability, and offers the most. It may have copied some concepts from other browsers but in the end compatibility is all important. Opera is not something I've tried but still I know IE will be the one standing when the open source guys stop programming Opera or Firefix.
redarmy11 03-22-07, 10:09 PM I stand by IE too. For all the fancy bits and pieces offered by the others they've yet to replicate IE's smoooth scrolling. They clunk up and down like a cow climbing the stairs.
What's that? Oh, OK. Up, then.
Can't get your cows downstairs? Why not call Bovine Descenders (http://www.hyperactive-stage.co.uk/bovinedescenders/about.html).
Despite the lack of snappyness, I'd have to say firefox.
k-meleon is also nice, but windows only. And KDE is developing what looks to be a very impressive web browser.
RubiksMaster 03-22-07, 11:35 PM I like Firefox, and that's what I use. I did try Opera once, and my first impression was really good. It had some good features, but I think I'll just stick to what I currently use.
Zardozi 03-23-07, 10:00 AM why dont any of you use Netscape Navigator?
I found Opera as a cool design but all the tab openings get redirected to another link which requires multiple clicking to get to a site.
Firefox seems ok so far.
Netscape reminds me of Imacs...and I am not a supporter of imacs. And netscape always needs some sort of upgrades to see a java file and latest flash and such.
Nikelodeon 03-23-07, 10:02 AM I didnt know Netscape Navigator still existed.
I didnt know Netscape Navigator still existed.
exactly, its a neanderthal-age based browser.
spuriousmonkey 03-23-07, 10:05 AM I tend to switch between opera and firefox every few months.
Now I am on Firefox.
Nikelodeon 03-23-07, 10:06 AM I still cant find a browser that makes the stuff on SciForums make sense.

I do the same. I am on opera now.
Zardozi 03-23-07, 10:11 AM Is there tabbed browsing on Firefox? nevermind.
Is there tabbed browsing on Firefox?
yes and no. depends on the settings.
Zardozi 03-23-07, 10:14 AM How about a setting for autofill with different accounts? for expample if I have 2 email accounts with yahoo that use autofill 1 or option autofill 2 with netscape.
domesticated om 03-23-07, 01:52 PM My vote goes to firefox as the best browser. It seems like I haven't encountered single pop up window in months, it checks spelling, and the Adblock extension has vastly improved my internet surfing experience.
The only con w/firefox is there isn't as much HTML compatibility as IE
firefox

not a firefox problem, but bad bad web design.
Oh and there is an add on that allows FF to mask it self as IE, should you happen to stumble a pone a page that says it requires IE
meh, I think they all are shitty
BenTheMan 03-23-07, 03:51 PM IE7 baby
I like Opera, i will just keep using it as long as it is around. Filling in forms, tabs etc.
Opera is the best.
Does'nt FF incorporate Netscape technology? It is still good though.
Stryder 03-24-07, 01:58 AM firefox

I concur to that. Web design in recent years has become messy. Originally designers only had to worry about HTML, then came Javascript.
There was then the addition of Embedded applets like Java and Shockwave/Flash. All up to this point was simple, however Microsoft liked to develop it's "Own" things such as VBScript, ActiveX and JScript.
On top of that there was a whole host of server-side interpreters for generating Server-side Includes which made web building even messier.
In all a decent Browser is one that can deal with the HTML, Javascript and some of the applets, everything else is an extra and not actually the core of web design. This is noted by the IE website versions that use interpreter processes that only exist in IE over other browsers.
Frankly, if it's not well documented on: http://www.w3.org/ then someone's bastardising it.
superstring01 03-24-07, 10:29 AM IE is still the best. It's nonpolitic to prefer anything from Microsoft, but I have them all installed and have used all of them readiliy and I still prefer IE over the rest, any day.

This is all fine in terms of web design ethics, but when I say HTML compatibility, the only thing I'm worried about (me being the web browsing end user) is that it just works.
Yes, the page author(s) wrote substandard code--but on my end, when I surf to these websites to do my browsing/shopping/banking/paying bills/managing accounts/etc, the page renders correctly in IE, and firefox occasionally chokes.
To this date, I have not seen many examples of it being the other way around. I haven't seen ANY examples on the major websites (like large businesses), but I have seen plenty of problems with firefox. I can't count the number of times I've gone to a place to make a purchase, and some sort of textbox or dropdownbox is screwed, or some sort of table/text area is overlapping another and sometimes missing.
Strange, I don't remember encountering anything of that. Maybe some other part of the net I visit.
