View Full Version : Best things in life?
Yamayama 05-19-04, 09:30 AM From talking about this to others:
(i) Love/other pleasant emotions (quite ineloquent & vague, I know)
(ii) Sex
(iii) Music
(iv) Food
(v) Travel
I know it's hard to measure the value of these (some abstract) things, but these would probably be my top five as well.
How about you?
In no particular order...
1 - Positive Feelings
2 - Music
3 - Food
4 - Violent games
5 - Sex
But it could be argued that my reasons for the last four are because of the first one

Yes, and my list to a large extent ignores the fact that music is strongly related to emotion as well.

Loss
These are unwanted but great teachers in life. To go without having them is impossible, but to go without ever experiencing them is unfortunet.
Yamayama 05-19-04, 10:45 AM Well, these responses aren't what I expected, but..quite interesting.
Do continue.
Yamayama 05-19-04, 10:55 AM sargentlard, I agree that seeds are amazing things (I think of the soil as a factory and the seeds as containing the blueprint for the job to be done as well as the workers ;)), but I think we're looking at it from different angles: my question could perhaps be reworded - 'What are the most pleasurable things in life?'
sargentlard, you're probably right in your view that these things are beneficial. The notion that 'suffering is beautiful' I suspect is a subtext of your post - maybe I'm wrong. It's a notion which I've contemplated before, and one which I certainly don't dismiss - at least the notion that it can be beautiful.
Anyway, I'm going off topic now.

Lying in the sun (preferably with the sea nearby)
Outdoor activities and booze, at the same time. Nothing beats setting up camp after a hard days hike and getting sitting down with a fishingpole in one hand and beer in the other.
Ooooh and a sauna, hot sweaty sauna after hard work is great.
and hot tubs, those are the best.
The best things in life.. ARE FREE!
Can't believe nobody said that yet. :p

jinchilla 05-20-04, 09:44 PM Neildo, beer isn't free to me.
Sorry to sound blasphemous, but beer tastes like piss. So in that sense, it's free. :p

5. Relief
The last one is probably a bit of a toss up. But, the feeling of relief is quite a high, going from a total low to its opposite.
most of the "biggies" have been said so this is just a snapshot of one of those perfect moments:
driving through the mountains in early summer, the sun's just coming up, car's top is down and listening to my favorite music (add a light mist hugging the mountains to that).
jinchilla 05-22-04, 10:08 AM buffys, just curious, which mountains do you have in mind? The mist brings the Smokies to my mind but I live in the San Juans. Different pictures.
Neildo, I'll have to take your word for it as I don't intend to taste piss.
My snapshot: Sitting in the warm pub in the company of friends downing a mug of ESB while watching the snow blanket the park across the street. fuzzy...

buffys, just curious, which mountains do you have in mind?
in my case it's the Rockies, but I doubt there is a mountain range on earth that isn't awe inspiring.
sideshowbob 06-03-04, 10:18 AM I know I'll get jumped on for this, but the mountains are nothing compared to the prairies. So, ditto to what Buffy said, but substitute "prairies".
(If you're bored, you just haven't been there long enough.)
SwedishFish 06-03-04, 10:33 AM plants
my answer for best things in life is apparently not important enough to post as it falls short of the 10 character limit, so i've been forced to write all this nonsense instead of the 6 character post i had originally intended to post. end character fascism now!
