Got inspired by the "most loved bands" thread. Which bands top your list of being the coolest live acts out there?

My list:

Gomez (frigging awesome...)
Rage against the Machine ("F**k you I won't do what you tell me!!")
Garbage (That woman with a mic and a stage is truly magic)
Weezer
Pearl Jam (They never finished the concert, but they got the songs to cover it up...)
Erykah Badu (Black magic woman...)
Infinite Mass
Life of agony (A vocalist that sings climbing up and hanging from the stagelights can't go wrong)

Sweet! You have Weezer on your list! Never been to one, but I hear they're pretty cool. Rivers just stands there in one position and sings, but the other bandmates like to whoop things up.

The pyro is good, and what can I say-- the Giant =W= sign is unsurpassed.

I had the chance to go last Year. Problem was, I really didn't 'get into' Weezer until the Summer, at which point I smothered them :D

Edit:: BTW, the only music concert I've ever been to was a symphony orchestra. And though it rocked, I can't really add it to this topic.

Sorry for you that you didn't get to see them, but I'm sure you'll get another chance. They don't seem to be going anywhere...

It doesn't really matter whether or not they're moving around much. You can still tell they're having fun, and they've got some seriously happy music to speak for them. Thinking back, I got some really bad bruises during that concert..

My brother was standing in front of me and suddenly got the idea that he had to start waving his jacket around and the zipper hit me in the face. Twice. I was seriously pissed off, and it wasn't until I punched him in the back of the head that he finally got the drift... :D

Ooh concerts, the good life... :)

Ok off topic but

I heard Incubus was a teribble live band- they just stand there and sing and look like they are bored- please say it isn't true..i love Incubus and would hate to found out they suck live.

Also i have heard Blink 182 were starting to lack in good stage performance....

as for the original question NIN- never been to a show but heard great things about their stage acts.

Omg, I would have loved to see Rage against the machine! Where and when did you see them?

Some of the best live-acts I've seen must have been Him at Roskilde '02 and Metallica in Stockholm '96. Metallicas show was incredible, the stage started burning and the lights went out. Some people got confused and I even heard that some went home because they got scared when one of the guys working on-stage fell down from a speaker (and kind of bungy-jumped with a cord). They lit up a few candles and started playing 'One' a couple of minutes later.

The band I would love to catch live is Slipknot, anyone here seen them live?

IMO, if Incubus is a band that stands around looking bored, NIN is a band who stands around trying to look good. And that is so not-rock n roll to me. They play a good act, but I was disturbed by their... IMO apparent self-absorbedness.

Childofthemind:

I heard TEB have started selling their concert tickets on ebay only, jacking up the ticket prices something absurdly. So I guess they have to be good... :D

Finger Eleven is pretty awesome, MGB, Sevendust, Jonny Lang if you like to go to concerts for music and no show (god forbid!), and The Doors (with Stuart Copeland and Ian Astbury) were...different. Ray Manzarek and Robby Kreiger had awesome chemistry, but hte other two were just kinda out of place.

And there's already a thread very much like this:

Gaah! How could I forget Tool on my list??

I know why, cause it was such a damn disappointment that they played a little over 60 minutes which, in Tool-time, translates to about six songs...

But still, they be awesome...

airavata-I thought that's waht you were talking about, but since I've only ever seen videos of them live, I can't really comment. But damn, I wish I could have seen them with Jim!! :(

To comment on everyone else's choices, while adding my own...

Weezer was my second concert ever, in May 2001 a few days before they released the green album. They were okay, but I really wasn't impressed. I just stared at Rivers' stickered guitar the whole time! But they did play Say It Ain't So, my favorite =W= song, so I was happy.

I saw Incubus' live show in the summer of 2002, with Phantom Planet. It was a very good performance, a great mix of songs from all three of their major-label albums. The show was great, awesome lighting. Brandon was all over the stage with the mic, and all the guys were at the top of their game musically. The acoustic set they played as an intermission of sorts kicked ass too. So, from what I've experienced, Incubus is a great live band.

In accordance with many who have witnessed their show, Tool is my favorite live band. Fucking amazing. They will take your breath away in concert.

Okay, here's a list of my favorite live bands... I'll try to keep it to five or six.
- TOOL!
- Audioslave
- dredg
- 30 Seconds To Mars
- Sigur Ros
- Coheed & Cambria
- Stone Sour
Yeah, so all seven of those bands are superb in a live environment, by my standards.

If you ever get the chance to see Sigur Ros live, by all means go! Christ, those guys are amazing.

Hmm ....

Floater
Screaming Trees (defunct)
Soundgarden (defunct)
Styx (seriously; with Dennis, circa 1997 or so, "Return to Paradise" tour; I went for the nostalgia; they still kicked my ass)
AC/DC
Pearl Jam
Peter Gabriel's band(s)
Brian Wilson's band (including the Wondermints)
Radiohead
Roger Waters' band (In the Flesh 2000)
Queens of the Stone Age

Notes:

Dennis DeYoung is constantly in "iffy" status with Styx; the tracks I've heard off the new album signal his permanent demise, and I never did see Styx's original drummer, John Panazzo; Rest in Peace, John, we're sorry to have missed you. But it was amazing; who knew Styx still had it in them?

Peter Gabriel's bands always include Tony Levin, but have in the past included Yssou N'Dour, Kate Bush, Paula Cole, David Rhodes, and others. I still wonder why more kids who play bass don't spend years lusting Tony Levin. But you seriously have to see the show before the band's role in it is understood. The "Secret World Live" video understated what I saw and heard in December.

Brian Wilson's band includes a bunch of cronies and studio rats at present, but one of the most powerful sections of that act is the Wondermints, who seem to be best-unknown for the ditty made infamous by by Mike Myers prancing around naked.

Roger Waters' band included Doyle Bramhall II (guitar) and Katie Kissoon (vocals); listening to the CD almost a year after the show, I turned to a friend of mine--a musician--and said, "It doesn't sound right." He looked back at me and said, "They're playing in time; that's what's wrong."

(And now that someone's mentioned Tool, I'm wondering how I could possibly forget.)

Gwar is definately one of the tops ever. How long have they been touring without a break?

I have been to too many great concerts to describe, but I will add the ones that I was dissapointed in.

-Pink Floyd Laser Show: This was the most brutal of all shows that I have witnessed. The show started with Dark Side of the Moon with clips from Wiazard of Oz. I enjoyed that because I have done the audio sync before. Then was a short intermission before the recording played songs from The Wall... This was where the shit hit the fan. There was a projector that was playing video, and it projected a whole section of war propoganda. I am neither for nor against the war, but I think that it is sick to subject people to a political view when the audience wants to hear the music. Then they played Have A Cigar (which isn't on The Wall), so I left the arena and went home disgusted.

Eric Clapton's Reptile Tour: I guess it was alright, but he played in such large stadiums that the sound quality sucked beyond measure. I sat near the back of the stadium and payed $60. I wasn't impressed.

All of the other numerous concerts that I have been to were satisfactory or great. I recommend not going to popular bands over a local band if you ever get the choice because large arenas take away alot from a performance.

My favorites:

Converge - Haven't seen them yet, but I know what is in store.
Psychedelic Breakfast w/ Tea Leaf Green
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
Countless others...

All the best live bands are jazz bands. Any local unknown jazz bands can blow away any band listed here.

This is probably going to sound lame, but one time I saw the Beach Boys and I thought they were excellent.
