View Full Version : Best Sci-fi show currently on TV
Mech_The_Muon 12-12-02, 02:57 PM So what do you think the best Sci-Fi show currently running is? I vote for Andromeda, because I like the whole noble hero out to save the decaying galaxy story, but Mutant X is almost tied. However, most people I talk to say I'm nuts. What do you people think is better? (or if I'm right, let me know, I need all the ego boost I can get :D)
Andromeda had its perks
Stargate all the fecking way for me!!!
UberDragon 12-12-02, 05:31 PM Hmmmm... Mutant X.... has a similar title and plot pertaining to another (more popular) series of, oh what was it again??
Oh, yeah the X-Men:mad:
You know, I really didn't see the similarities until you pointed it out uber :D
First Wave had its up (and a lot of downs) and The Outer Limits was cool
Stargate first, Firefly second.
CounslerCoffee 12-12-02, 11:07 PM Farscape is first. In second is Farscape. Frell everything else. No really, second place goes to Odyssey 5.
Mech_The_Muon 12-12-02, 11:38 PM Hey Uber - originally, Mutant X was supposed to be a live action type series thingy for X-Men, as done by Marvel. However, since Fox owns the rights to the movie, they couldn't do it. That is why similar storyline and stuff.
I don't really have a favorite at the moment. I don't like any of the Sci-Fi series out right now. Well, I shouldn't say that, I like a few of them (Stargate.... yeah =P ) but there aren't any that give me that "I can't wait to see the next episode" feeling.
Pollux V 12-13-02, 07:39 AM Farscape 4ever:D
Actually, I liked Earth Final Conflict for a while. The season with Liam was quite good I thought. And B5 was always a good show, the storyline really worked well throughout the series. Now EFC has gone to shit and B5 is over :( :(
I enjoyed this for a while then I sorta lost the plot and just gave up. The 1st series was great
Mech_The_Muon 12-13-02, 05:30 PM Spacee Abovew and Beyond was a great series. too bad they lost funding and never got to resolve the storyline.
Yeah that was a good series too. I liked the intro music =P
I've always liked B5 a lot because of it's graphics as well. They actually got explosions and damage in space fairly accurate. No huge fireballs or flaming debris like you'd see in Star Trek and most other sci-fi series.
Pollux V 12-13-02, 06:15 PM You won't see explosions in star trek that often, at least the series. They tended to deal with science more than action, which I always thought was cool...but apparently less sophisticated people feel differently:D
What's wrong with a little action!!
Guns, Fire, Big Bangs!!!
And don;t you dare say I'm not sophisticated, cos I am :p
Pollux V 12-13-02, 06:45 PM Damn, you set yourself up for...let's see...three or four insults there thor.
Shame:p
Ok then, take yer best shot
Neutrino_Albatross 12-17-02, 10:12 AM Well since its shows that are currently on i guess i can still say Farscape. After it goes off i dont know. Maybe Stargate if the new season is better than that last one was. (God that was awful, really ruined the show IMHO)
CounslerCoffee 12-17-02, 08:31 PM Its farscape! I know ive already said this but Im just going to say it again FARSCAPE! FARSCAPE! FARSCAPE!
Stargate is okay, but I just like TV shows that make you think. Id say that most Gaters cant understand a complex plot line, but scapers can.
Alien Mastermind 12-29-02, 10:11 AM Screw Farscape... interesting, I've never heard of that show. However, I've been watching Stargate SG1 for about two years and still think nothing beats it. NOTHING!
CounslerCoffee 12-29-02, 10:14 AM Your lying alien. Theres no way that you couldnt of heard of farscape if youve been watching stargate for the past two years. Farscape comes on right after stargate, and used to be on before that.
Alien Mastermind 12-29-02, 10:20 AM Well then I must have been watching it on a different channel, because I'm dead sure Farscape doesn't come before nor after Stargate. Okay, I admit I have heard the name, but nothing more. Not even comercials!
Oh yes, I'm watching Stargate on CH cable 18.
Alien Mastermind 12-29-02, 10:44 AM
I can't believe i forgot Gundam Wing! Maybe it's not AS good as Stargate, but it definetely stands as #2 for me.
static76 12-31-02, 01:36 AM If it falls into the category of a Sci-fi series, then I would say Buffy TVS is the best hands down. Andromeda is okay, not great. Enterprise is the only watchable Star Trek series I've seen(the others were too geeky and lame, although ST:TNG had its moments). Mutant X is a bad ripoff of X-Men, there are no plots in the episodes of interest, and the action is boring.
Alien Mastermind 12-31-02, 10:35 AM I agree that few Star Trek seires are watchable, but appart from Enterprise, I also like Star Trek: Voyager. Those are my two favorite (and the only ones I watch) Star Trek series; but StarGate SG1 still rules!
I’ve been reading and watching sci-fi for the past 40 years. I think I have probably seen nearly every sci-fi movie and series ever made, at least all of any note.
While the current trend is for more and better special effects the story lines and the imaginative ideas are very thin. Perhaps I have become so seasoned that I find it difficult to be impressed anymore, but I don’t think so, it is more that there just isn’t anything very good around at the moment.
I grew up when Doctor Who was new and even though that was very low budget it introduced some superb ideas for the time. I was also around when the very first Star Trek episodes began and at the time they were a massive break through in Sci-fi for TV.
I keep hoping for something so new that it will inspire me in the same way as those early ST shows; there simply isn’t anything around.
Probably the best ideas came from such series as The Twilight Zone, and a series called Out of The Unknown. These were collections of single short one-off ideas with no attempt to stretch the idea into Sci-Fi soap operas, and as such were always very fresh and where you never knew if the hero was going to die or not.
Of the better SciFi movies recently then I’d say Alien, Time Cop, Dark City, Matrix, Stargate, Terminator, are probably the best. I’m sure I’ve missed one or two. Hmm the Langoliers wasn’t bad.
On TV – Voyager was pretty good, DS9 was a mistake I think, Lexx was definitely different, Farscape had its moments, Babylon 5 was good when new. Some of Sliders had potential, and Quantum Leap was kinda fun. But at the moment I can’t say there is anything I don’t mind missing.
My teenage daughters like Buffy and I think Charmed, if these can be called sci-fi, and I watch them sometimes by accident. I guess since I haven’t been a teenager for a long time I find these shows more like comedies than serious sci-fi.
Probably the best comedy sci-fi show is Red Dwarf, followed by Lexx.
Buffy is good except that the "high school" person is in college...
Voyager was pretty good, DS9 was a mistake I think
I dunno, DS9 had it's moments. The Dominion War was very well done I thought. I thought Voyager was a bit bland though, the only episodes I really enjoyed from it were the Year of Hell, the ones with the Hirojian, 8472 vs the Borg.... that's about it. I'm sure there's a few in between that I've missed, but overall I thought the series wasn't very spectacular. I miss TNG, that was a good series. And don't even get me started on the Voyager ending :bugeye:
DS9 had the best ending of any ST series I thought.
CounslerCoffee 01-02-03, 01:23 PM DS9 had the best ending of any ST series I thought.
Are we talking about the over all ending or the last episode? Because the last episode sucked. The way that they used old scenes and played cheesy music... egh. But the ending was excellent.
Voyager did have its moments, other then that I didnt like it. DS9 was the best trek of them all, but no one ever watched it.
I liked the Voyager ending, except the part where they wipe out the Borg and save the universe... egh. The Borg are cool.
ozmonster 01-08-03, 05:34 PM Farscape is by far the best sci-fi out there. Anyone like Babylon 5? I think it blows doors on any startrek (although i like them also).
A show that hasn't been mentioned is Jeremiah. That series is done well.
Lexx is awesome as well.
oz
I don't think too highly of Lexx. I would class it as one of the worse shows out there! Even Days of our Lives is better than that!!
ozmonster 01-08-03, 05:53 PM I will say lexx is very different but if given a chance is very funny. It is a comedy. Given your proclivity to "sci/fi light" shows like red dwarf, I would think you might like it.
Have you actually watched more than a couple episodes?
oz
Alien Mastermind 01-08-03, 05:57 PM I would never want to watch more than a couple of episodees of that cheap show. Have you seen their special effects? They're disgusting! And I don't even want to start talking about the acting...
I will say lexx is very different but if given a chance is very funny
I find it funny anyway, have you seen what they call "special effects" and "acting"!! I'd rather go and see The Two Towers thank you very much!!
Given your proclivity to "sci/fi light" shows like red dwarf
But Red Dwarf is meant to be funny and it's British, woo!! Also, it has better SFX than Lexx
Have you actually watched more than a couple episodes?
I was forced to watch many episodes AND films by a friend of mine...I nearly went insane!!
And I'm really taking a shine towards Alien Mastermind, woo!!

I'd have to argue about Red Dwarf having better sfx. Talk about low budget. They can't even come up with a costume for evolved cat. A cat would never evolve into a man no matter how many billions of years of evolution.
Lexx was also meant to be funny and it is not British, woo!!:p

Something isn't registering on my logisto-meter...I don't know quite what it is, but it seems like you just put together a sentence that made no sense at all:D
I really enjoyed lexx, it was pretty cheap, but it had its moments.
Does anyone know when the first idea for a living ship came into being? As far as I know Farscape was first, I believe however that I am probably wrong.
I found Voyager extremely bland, I would have watched it if I had the channel (UPN is not on Directv). The Next Generation is easily the best Star Trek series, it was really a revolution in the way that the whole universe played out on both the movie and tv screens. Every trek episode after that has been written in a very similar way, there aren't any more guys killing random klingons and having sex with green women (not to say that wasn't awesome:D), however lately it seems that plots have ceased in renaissance. The Next Generation was great because of the new concepts it introduced and the ideas that it confronted, alternate dimensions, godlike beings, giant-living-space-creatures, artificial intelligence, and an overall emphasis on inner-character drama with science fiction rather than space combat.
Farscape is just like that, only done significantly better.

Yeah, your wrong. But farscape does it better. Lexx was actually a living ship, but he was like, retarded.

Yes, Voyager = Bad. I think that DS9 was the best Trek... for obvious reasons. I still love farscape, it has twists and turns... and keeps me guessing.
They can't even come up with a costume for evolved cat. A cat would never evolve into a man no matter how many billions of years of evolution.
You mean Kat, decendant of Frankenstein, cat of Clister who became the father of the cat race. He's supposed to be an extremely vain creature, hence the jazzy get ups!! And it works too. It's hilarious.
And anyway, it's a comedy. Comedies are allowed to be stupid. The Backwards episode where everything is going backwards. Kat decides he needs to "relieve" himself, goes behind a bush, screams, then comes out with his hair all messed up and his clothes outta place, then says 'Don't ask!'. If this was in Star Trek, it wouldn't even touch any of the everyday matters such as crapping backwards.
Lexx was also meant to be funny and it is not British, woo!!
IT WAS MEANT TO BE FUNNY!! You're yanking my crank!!
Does anyone know when the first idea for a living ship came into being? As far as I know Farscape was first, I believe however that I am probably wrong
The first instant I can remember is the Tyranid Hive Fleets in Warhammer 40,000. But on TV, I'm sure it was in some 80's Sci Fi cartoon or something
I found Voyager extremely bland
I had to watch that cos my dad thought Janeway was hot *hangs head*
I think that DS9 was the best Trek
Ditto. I loved it. It actually got into the characters lives. The show so reinforced my belief of it being the best trek by that big old battle for DS9 in the Dominion War....WOW!! And I know I've said that a hell of a lot of times, but meh!! Try and stop me :p
