View Full Version : Best Cover Song
valentino 04-04-03, 01:12 AM What do you think is the best cover song?
I'm voting for Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal, it was perfectly played out and honored the original without being a boring copy.
FRAGGLE ROCK by Allister. I love it!
But Powerman 5000's Relax (Cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood)
I like covers that incorperate the bands own style. Not an exact replica such as AAF's one.
reformedtopunk 04-04-03, 06:35 AM I tend to go for "Tainted love" by Shades Apart.
theonlyguyever 04-04-03, 07:26 AM 'No Quarter' by Tool
(originally performed by Led Zeppelin)
Vortexx 04-04-03, 12:31 PM DJ Sammy feat. Yanou - Heaven (candlelight mix)
I know, not that intelligent rock that you kids like, but you just get that midsummernight on ibiza, everything in place, 'feel good' from it .
(original Bryan Adams)
Besides, Yanou is a dutch singer, so I give some room to chauvinism:p
*stRgrL* 04-04-03, 12:52 PM Nirvanas Man Who Sold the World kicked ass. Actually all the songs they covered on Unplugged rocked.
Yeah I like Smooth Criminal too.
I also like Dixie Chix' version of Landslide. The original is much better but theres is pretty good.

The Donna's - School's Out (Alice Cooper)

Our Lady Peace - Imagine (I believe this was done by Lennon but I have no idea if it was performed by him or the Beatles  )
The Offspring - I Wanna Be Sedated (The Ramones)
sargentlard 04-05-03, 02:12 PM The Ramones - Spiderman theme song...i don't know if you can call that a cover song but it's still good...
Also do you have to get copyright permission to do these cover songs or just do them and hope record companied don't notice.
ArtOfLiving 04-05-03, 04:06 PM Faith No More-War Pigs(Black Sabbath)
Tool-No Quarter(Led Zeppelin)
Deadsy-Tom Sawyer(Rush)good cover even though i hate deadsy
valentino 04-06-03, 12:36 AM Oh yeah, I also enjoyed Dynamite Hack's "Boyz in the Hood".
YoungWriter 04-06-03, 02:39 PM Worst cover= Maddona's "American Pie."
I hope ya'll are in "agreeance" on this one.
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Duh!
Runner up would be Sadist's cover of Iron Maiden's "Wrathchild" and Cradle of Filth's cover of "Sodomy and Lust" by Sodom. Tool's cover of "No Quarter" has been mentioned.
Type O Neg does some rather funny covers, most notably of Britany Spears "Hit me baby one more time" and "Possession".
lol
Cradle of Filth - Final Countdown (Europa)
airavata 04-07-03, 11:37 AM the best cover is definitley Jimi Hendrix's version of All along the watchtower (originally by Bob Dylan).
Both versions are amazing. Dylan's was really good, his harmonica and his voice .... Hendrix's was seriously amazing....guitar in his version is otherworldly.
shatner was on stern quite a while back and the whole gig consisted of howard playing tracks off shatner's record and poking fun at him. a worse album cannot be made. there was one however of some retards in a school in canada that cut a record. became quite popular tho i cant quite remember anything more about it. that was the pits
anyway some fave covers
listen (http://webserv.webhop.org/Sat.mp3) to milla jovovich doing lou reed
watch (http://webserv.webhop.org/Across.Mpg) fiona apple doing lennon
airavata 04-08-03, 12:43 PM stevie ray vaughan did a cover of voodoo chile?
the one by hendrix is seriously amazing....the guitar is just awesome in that song.
how's stevie ray's cover of it?
is it an exact copy or diff?
better (you can string me up now)
Last Kiss-Pearl Jam
Unchained Melodies-Sarah Mcglauchlan
Dreams-the corrs
Sympathy for the Devil-Guns n roses
Blackbird-Sarah Mcglauchlan
Paint it Black-Tea Party
Video Killed the Radio Star-Presidents of the United States
Apocalyptica-all their covers
Leaving on a Jet Plane-Chantel Kreviazek
Good Covers (that haven't already been mentioned)
Stone Cold Crazy-- Metallica****(Queen)
Hallowed by Thy Name-- Cradle of Filth (Iron Maiden)
The Hunt-- Sepultura (New Model Army) One of my fave songs of all time, methinks.
Across the Universe-- Fiona Apple (Beatles, already mentioned but worthy of another mention)
War Pigs-- Faith No More (Black Sabbath, see above)
Mrs. Robinson-- Pennywise (Simon & Garfunkel?)
Close to Me-- Get Up Kids (The Cure)
Molly's Lips-- Nirvana (The Vaselines)
Super Marios Bros Theme Song-- Mr. Bungle (Nintendo?)
War Ensemble-- Bigwig? (Slayer)
Harvester of Sorrow-- Link80 (Metallica)
This one makes me blush to admit (:o), but I like Limp Bizkit's remake of George Micheal's "Faith" better than the original. But then again, I'm not too fond on George Micheals in the first place, so the bar wasn't too high; LB just made a shitty song less shitty.
And a mentionable cover, although not great, is Melt Banana's version of "We Will Rock You" by Queen.
**Afterthought:**Actually most of Metallica's covers on the Garage Inc. Cd aren't too bad.
Ooh, I forgot one:
Do You Wanna Dance-- The Ramones (Dunno?)
YoungWriter 04-10-03, 08:05 PM Covers I like:
Love Buzz- Nirvana
3am (Tabitha's Secret)- Matchbox Twenty
Tired ("")- Matchbox Twenty
Never Take the Place of Your Man by Prince, Gimme Shelter by Rolling Stones- Goo Goo Dolls
Don't Let Me Down (Beatles)- Matchbox Twenty
Time After Time (Lauper)- Matchbox Twenty
American girl (Petty)- Goo Goo Dolls
The best covers I've heard are any Dylan covers of Hendrix.
della-dee 04-10-03, 08:13 PM im listening to a cover band as we speak......
Though it is not on this album im listening to, I am reminded that I love Me First and the Gimme Gimme's version of "My Boyfriend's Back". and most of the other versions of songs that they do.
But also, Metallica's Ramones cover on the new tribute album:
53rd and third is very good.
BloodSuckingGerbile 04-11-03, 04:52 AM Cradle of Filth - Hallowed Be thy Name (Iron Maiden cover)
Guns n' Roses - Knocking on Heavens' Door (Bob Dylan cover)
Children of Bodom - The Final Countdown (Europe cover)
Children of Bodom - The Trooper (Iron Maiden cover)

How did i forget that one. Yeah that was a good song, i have heard a little bit of the original song but the LB vesion is definetly good. Especially the dj scratching while Fred durst screams "faith"...yup nothing says love better then screaming while a DJ scratches. Also Incubus has some good covers too.
Whyatt Thrash 04-11-03, 10:13 PM Metro - System of a Down is one cool cover...
Ready or Not - Fugees
wesmorris 04-11-03, 10:18 PM They covered "dancing days" by Led Zepplin. I honestly thought there was no way they could do it justice. I thought "no way man, it rocks FAR too hard to be improved upon". Then STP did a remake and goddamnit I hate to admit it but those fuckers kicked it RIGHT IN THE ASS!!!!!!!!!! Damn that is a badass cover song.
I like that "Baker Street" thing by those Foo Fighter characters too. ;)
(as to why "sadly", for some reason I've always really dug STP's music, while feeling that I have to be ashamed for doing to as they are "kind of mainstream". it's tough to stay hip man)

How is SRV's version? Do you need to ask? OBEY THE GUITAR! You must hear it. SRV was as godlike as Hendrix for real. Both of them absolute virtuosos.
