I just finished reading 'Beauty Myth' by naomi wolf... its a remarkable book outlining gender issues and giving it historical and economical background.... i recommend it to everyone... its quite an eye opener... comments by anyone who has read it? just found it quite revolutionary in some ways... im sure we think about gender issues all the time, but this really gives it a ton of perspective... give it a shot... :)
p.s. my girlfriend didn't force me to read it.. eheh.. :D

I disagree with Naomi if she states that it's all males that put models of "perfect females" in the media to as Naomi puts it "keep the average female in place". Maybe we started it, but it's now the females themselves that lead this ratrace for beauty and tell other females how to be, getting boob/nosejobs for your 17 birthday in cali, or become bigtime porn producers themselves....
Maybe some really fatass girl wants to believe Naomis retro-feminism as an excuse not to shave her armpits or feel slightly less insecure about herself because "beauty is just a male induced myth".
I attribute more intelligence and self-respect to todays generation than Naomi does. Research showed that while role / gender models are partly forced by culture, genetics it is still number one. Some lesbian couples were surprised that their male offspring STILL not wanted to play with dolls and rather participated in "sherrif chasing the indians" , also they could not interest their female offspring for doing male things, unless offcoars they had the same "butch" genes as their parents :p
Nowadays females not only participate in the beauty race , but also in the succesrace , having a serious career AND want to be a mother at some point in life...
Got Valium?
outline of pertinent points please?
