so yeah Hawaii is awsome.
I wouldn't turn down a trip there but it's not on my list of places I must see. The whole ticky-tacky-touristy thing turns me off. The retired cottonheads wearing lei's, the shallow Ken's & Barbie's on the beaches, the chain hotels, Starbucks and overpaid, overweight white guys playing golf, no thanx. Hawaii's culture has been labeled and modified and sold like plastic lunchboxes for general consumption. I'd take Papua New Guinea or Tonga over Hawaii any day.

$$$ money money money
Hawaii sounds perfect right now. If I had the money, I'd be there right now, getting wasted. ...But life is the cruel drama that only allows me to dream about going to Hawaii.
Syzygys 03-12-07, 08:28 PM Been there, very nice. Go when the kids are still in school. Weather is the same year around. Great surfing. I loved snorkeling, feeding the fish. We were among like 200 fish, amazing....
Maui. Up like 14 000 feet (?) and we bicycled down through the clouds. 30 minutes later you are down to oceanlevel. Don't die before going there...

Fraggle Rocker 03-12-07, 09:47 PM We were there in 1976. It was wonderful. We'd both been to Europe and done other traveling, but Hawaii was still wonderful.
We hiked down into the volcano on Mt. Haleakala on Maui and saw the silverswords that only grow there. Saw the Black Sand Beach on the Big Island. Toured the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu, yeah it was "Hawaiiland" but it was still fun. Hiked a trail on Kauai that the Frommer Guide to Hawaii on Five Dollars a Day (now you know just how long ago 1976 was) said was passable by anybody "except the old and infirm," it was quite strenuous but at the other end was a beach with caves in which people were just living for free--nude. A couple of them met us on their way out to go shopping, apparently they didn't put their clothes on until they were closer to town. The swimming was delightful and so was the food. We're not really party people but the drinks were great and the party people were having a really good time.
There are lots of nice beach resorts all over the world. Between us we've been to Acapulco, Montego, Aruba, Israel, both sides of the Adriatic... and hell we spent most of our lives in Southern California which is hard to beat. But Hawaii has so much more: more wilderness than Europe, less squalor than Mexico (less squalor than Cleveland actually), more laid back than San Diego if that's possible. (OK it's hard to knock Montego during the Reggae Sunsplash, that was actually worth going back a second time, but Hawaii is that trippy all year round. :)) Hawaii is a State in the Union but it is also a state of mind. It was the first time in my life that I ever took my watch off and left it off for the whole trip.
We've never gone back, but everyone we know who did says, "Man I'm glad I went when I did that first time. It was so much nicer then." Honolulu is a huge city now but Kauai is still rather sparsely populated and the Big Island is mostly ranch land and volcanoes. Most people concentrate on Maui now to get the experience that used to be available on Oahu. Don't go during the traditional month for weddings in Japan (I forget when that is) or you will be surrounded by hundreds of Japanese honeymooners on tour buses everywhere you go. Don't go during the Christmas season; you'll probably appreciate the cheesy Hawaiian muzak in all the stores and dining rooms but you won't appreciate it when it turns into cheesy Christmas muzak.
Go right now, don't wait until you and Hawaii are older.

I've lived in hawaii, honolulu exactly. Hawaii is 60-70 percent asian and other ethnic minorities and even europeans such as the portuguese. It is the most unique state because of this and it is way out in the pacific and closer to asia. The culture is unique and they should be APPLAUDED for the fact they really do know how to be multicultural and celebrate eachothers different cultures. As well, even the socalled bad areas aren't as bad as the areas here on the mainland as they call it. They are also very friendly and open-minded. I cannot recall anyone being rude to me as its common here except for one arrogant airforce piece of shit.
A lot of americans do not know this so if you are planning on living there it's important if you are racist or prejudiced. They do not appreciate arrogant or 'i am american, i am superior you foreigner attitude'. They do not live by that kind of dirty, degenerate negative attitude so prevalent and accepted here on the mainland. They are truly progressive and positive. The climate is gorgeous and you will feel you are actually on another planet. The cultural atmosphere is vibrant, positive, clear and sweet. Paradoxically, people are actually "normal" or more healthy in mind and body.
I laugh at the arrogant lowlifes who end up there especially some of the military as they have no choice in having their eyes wide opened and that they are not the 'sh*t' as they arrogantly presumed or better, actually garbage. They huddle at ihops and denny's and don't try the local fare, culture etc like the dullard, obnoxious, stank roaches they are. They desperately need to go back to the mainland to resume their false ego as they can't exercise it in face of such opposition and a different culture, lol. It's disgusting as the typical american continues to look at the different races and cultures as if they are inferior when in fact hawaii is cleaner, more beautiful, progressive and just plain better. These common types need to stay the fuk out as they will taint and degrade such a beautiful place.
