When Frank McGarahan saw a homeless man being beaten up by gang of 12 young thugs, he stepped in - and paid for his courage with his life.

Just think if he would have been carrying a firearm he wouldn't be dead but those attacking him would be.

It's UK. Ordinary people don't carry guns.

Still, it would seem that if the thugs were to even think he had a weapon they probably wouldn't have attacked him.

    No good deed goes unpunished.

    Unless you have a firearm.

On another note, It's amazing what group mentality does to people.

I recall reading that the UK doesn't have the death penalty, most unfortunately.

If he wasn't the senior executive of Barclays, it wouldn't even have made the papers.

He could just say: "Why do I need this. I'm a millionaire. Who gives a shit about some homeless man being beaten up in dark alley. I'll just mind my own fuckin' business."

That's make the story even more important. Old values such as chivalry are still not forgotten, even if own life is on the stake.
This man was moral giant and deserves every headline for what he did.

That assumes he actually knew what he was getting into. Its my guess most business executives do not expect to be taken into a neck lock and have their brains beaten out. Nevertheless whether it was chivalry or foolhardiness, he did try to save the homeless man and that must be appreciated.

pj read the thread, that is not even germane to the discussion, the point was:

and what I was pointing out was that you don't need to be a Senior Executive to have your actions in the news cycle.

Yes, comprehension, reading comprehension does wonders for a coherent response.

My son's best friend's dad was killed last year when he tried helping a man who was being beaten up. He was punched in the face and knocked to the ground. When he was on the ground they kicked him to death. The last thing this country needs is guns. We're violent and stupid enough.

I think what he did was amazing and brave. I know of another man who who did this and was killed too. I also know what it's like to be on the receiving end of violence and nobody stepping in to help. What's it called bystander apathy or something? I think it's always best to at least at least try to intervene when another human being is harmed. I think women are really good at diffusing conflict and I think men are really good at the physical intervention if that doesn't work.

Actually if they had been armed, there would have been a excellent chance that they would have survived, and rescued the victim, the lack of their having a weapon lead to their deaths.

No, if they'd have been armed they'd have all been dead.

Eh, What do you mean "Why"? I may be jumping to conclusions here so I'm sorry if I am but I think what you're suggesting is that my son's friend's dad and this other bloke would be the ONLY people in the scenario with guns, they'd be able to point the guns at these thugs and threaten them to leave the victim alone? Because if you're suggesting everyone had guns and only the good guys get away I think you've been watching too much Hollywood trash. I'm sorry if that's flippant, I don't mean to come across that way but if I think you're suggesting what I think you're suggesting it just seems utterly ridiculous.

Not really. Rather than "reason" with the thugs, just shoot the leader and threaten to finish him off unless everyone kisses pavement.
