Anyone got any stories of great scientific breakthroughs which were initially met with "Bah, humbug!" from the scientific or academic establishment?

Everybody knows that the world is a flat disc laid upon the back of four pachyderms standing on the shell of a turtle who swims through space.
And earthquakes are caused when the fourth elephant has to raise it's hind leg to allow the sun to pass.

I always thought a giant man held earth in the sky, who knows how he stands up but I mean, come on, religion has to be mixed with 'science' sometimes.
