Why are autopsy's performed on people when it is apparent how the person died? For instance, the shooting at the high school today. The took the shooter's body for an autopsy after he shot himself.

because it has to be certain, what bullet was used, when did blood clot=time the incident occured, effects on the brain, studies like these help those who end up alive after such incidents.

There was another school shooting today?

Often times, it is not just to find the direct cause of death, but to aid in the investigation in other ways. Fior example, was the shooter on drugs or medications?

It could turn out that he was suffering from a fever or something that affected his brain. It might not matter to his victims but it would sure make a difference to his mom. If he contracted the fever by using a school restroom that was not maintained in sanitary condition the school could be up for a big lawsuit.

You don't watch enough TV. :)
