On Jan. 13, 2008, a 27 metre-wide asteroid, 2008 AF3, will make a close flyby (1.3 lunar distances) of the Earth. The asteroid will appear as a magnitude 14 star in the northern sky

You will need a 12" diameter telescope to spot 2008 AF3 (http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2008%20AF3;orb=1;cov=0;log=0#orb) as it passes through Ursa Major this evening.

I wonder if they could use a tight laser beam to light the asteroid up for better viewing?
