Earlier today there was simultaneous assaination atempt on both the president and the PM of east timor The aleged master mind was the rengade Major Renardo who unconfermed reports have said was killed in the atack on the president. The president was reportedly shot in the abdomen and arm in the atack. He taken unconious to the Australian millatary base where he was treated until he could be transfered to Darwin hospital The PM was unhurt in the atack In responce Kevin Rudd will be traviling to East Timor later this week and we will be bosting our contingent to just under 1000 at the request of the timorese goverment
Dragon its a country near Australia that indoneasia took over untill it was released in 94 i think? when they voted for independance. We provided troops and other services to protect the east timorese. Then we had to comit more troops when a rebellion by a group of millarty and police caused a flare up of vilonce in the country. Now the leader of that rebellion is dead but the president was seriously injured in the atack Challenger78 i think we owe them a debt after we surported the indoneasians over there invasion of timor, why? out of fear we would be next if we didnt? Im much less worried about our position on timor that i am about of position on iraq and afganistan
Good to keep things in perspective, I agree, However we shouldn't get into a situation where we are propping up a government, which may anger the locals.
they should have fought each other off in Timor. Say the Chechens for example, what tactic worked on them? We gave them the weapons and turned them against each other and they did so...
Im pritty sure that unlike in Iraq we are not pissing off the locals by being there. If they didnt like there goverment they wouldnt have voted for them. I highly doubt that there was much surport for the atempted coup that took place. I maybe wrong about that but i think unless evidence is shown that dissagrees we should be surporting the goverment in this case
yeah, although we don't have firsthand reports from the ground, It seems to go pretty well out there.
actually its the solomons where i see a problem with our forces vs the will of the people. We have already had problems there with them refusing to hand over a suspected rapist and insted making him attorny general
the referendum vote was in 1999. east timor then officially became democratic republic of timor-leste in may 2002. australia still need to be there as a friend for a while not because what had happened in the past, but because the timorese need and want australia to help them now. indonesia screw up big time in the past and there's little we can do for now to help the timorese. unknown to many this small and poor country is among the first that donated money to indonesia when the december 2004 tsunami disaster happened.
