Is being a messy person an indication of disorderly thinking?

But, doesn't the anal retentativeness of the compulsive obessive make the person more likely to focus on detail and think better?

OCD helps you see the trees, but not the forest.

They say a disorderly desk implies a disorderly mind. What then does an empty desk imply?

Yeah, messy people can see the forrest of candy wrappers they have left behind.

what the hell does that even mean?

Why?

It means messy people drop their candy wrappers on the floor behind them and don't pick them up, eventually leading to a "forrest" of candy wrappers. It was meant as a subtle insult.

OCD is not the opposite of messiness. They are unrelated conditions.

I knew a guy who was a complete wreck. His apartment was strewn with months-old pizza boxes, his office was filled with paper—not even stacks of paper, just a random mass. He was even about 200 pounds overweight. In his case, though it was that he didn't care about those sorts of mundane problems. When he focussed on an issue though, he was genuinely brilliant and conscientious about the details.

Yutaka Taniyama, of the Taniyama - Shimura conjecture that was intrumental in inspiring Wiles's proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, was a slob. So were several other good mathematicians.

Beethoven was slob.

Most young men, compared with most young women, are slobs.

I know at least a few good Go players who are slobs.

Good college calculus students are as often slobs as not, in my experience - at least in their manner of doing schoolwork and dressing themselves.

What is a "sloppy thinker" ?

Maybe messy people are more organized thinkers, and super neat people have to make their whole world organized in order to get their brain on the same track...
