View Full Version : Are Humans Strange?
If an intelligent creature from another planet was to come to Earth and observe us, would they consider us strange and inneficient? I was looking around at everything, wondering how it came to be, such as government. Couldn't it have easily developed totally different? Is the way we do it most efficient?
On a smaller scale, would an alien see our ways of dressing and communicating innefficient? We sometimes dress up for certain occasions. Why do we have to put different styled clothing? If you were not conditioned to our society, you would have no idea that wearing a whole suit was fancier than a teeshirt and jeans. We also see so many fluxuations in wealth, like we are living seperately, yet we are together under government. We sometimes gather in places, such as Church/Temple/Mosque or a play, to watch seemingly normal people seperated from the rest of the people, doing something that would appear meaningless to outsiders. We have all styles of architecture from different regions. Were we born to notice that a massive glass chandelier is preferable to a little light bulb that emits the same amount of light? We can't agree on a common belief. Would another being be baffled by the way we fight over it?
Or do you think all societies would have these deformities in their culture? I always wonder about how strange we really are, and how easily today could have been totally changed by a tiny event in the past. If we observed other beings, we would probably think of them as strange, but I wonder about which is the most efficient from an unbiased point of view.

Well, how do you know they didn't create us? If that's the case they better not find us strange since they created us under their image.

Humans are remarkable and somewhat out of the ordinary here on earth, i don't know if that makes them strange or not.

Orleander 08-25-07, 09:03 AM LOL, I always wondered if they would think machines rules the earth and we were just fleas who lived on them.

Oh no, the very sight of a Human would make them cringe in fear.

Norsefire 08-25-07, 09:43 AM Yup Humanity is pure-blooded and we are supreme we just need to grow and expand and grow stronger and Enmos you should be proud to be Human!
Great. We haven't met an alien society, but we already have human supremacists.
Yup Humanity is pure-blooded and we are supreme we just need to grow and expand and grow stronger and Enmos you should be proud to be Human!
Why should i be proud ? There are more reasons to be ashamed than there are reasons to be proud..
P.S. You forgot to answer the question: Would God bow to us ?

They're called "humans", and I think there's billions of 'em ...all over the world ...doing shitty things to other "humans" out of greed, selfishness and lack of compassion.

Tell me why Humanity is not a perfect image.
And you are a Human, why are you talking as if you are ashamed of what you are? What if you were born a frog? Consider yourself lucky.

Muslims terrorist bombers blowing up market places full of women and children? That's a "perfect image"?
Murder of innocent people? That's a "perfect image"?
And you are a Human, why are you talking as if you are ashamed of what you are?
I am ashamed of all of the humans on Earth who do such horrid things to other humans. How can you be proud of such humans?

No, Shorty, I didn't forget. But think about it, if I'd started listing all the shitty things that humans do to other humans, I'd still be typing the post!! :D

Well, good ....I'm glad I was able to open your eyes a little to the realities of the world. Idealism is a wonderful thing, but it must be taken with a good dose of reality or it'll warp your mind.

...LOL! Really, though, I hope I've not "crushed" any of those ideals ...but I do hope that I've put just a little touch of realism into the mix. Geez, I really hope so, or else I've worn my fingers right down to the bone for nothing! :D

Nope, you didn't. Muslims are terrorists, not the Jews.
But since you're Muslim, I'm sure you turn a blind eye to all of the Muslim terrorism in the world ....even if that terrorism kills other innocent Muslims, you still cheer them on, don't you?
Baron Max
So wouldn't an unbiased entity be perplexed as to why we have so many flaws in our society? If out history (or another life form's existance) were to start over from scratch, do you think it would develop the same way we did?
Orleander 08-25-07, 10:12 PM Some may say 'never underestimate the cruelty of man'
Spend a year living in a trailer park and you will leave saying "Never underestimate the stupidity or lack of hygiene of man"
It is just god awful embarrassing!
Because you are a Human, a being of the purest blood and divine existence. No being is above a Human.
Depends, is God real?
I am human, agreed.
Being of purest blood ? Do you care to explain ?
Being of divine existence ? You mean made by God, or God-like or... what do you mean ?
No being is above a human... in what sense ? Morality, intelligence, strength.. what ?
Is God real ? I thought you were the Muslim here. I'm an atheist... so you tell me.
And they are exploring, conquering, and helping the Universe. They are uniting and making various leaps in various fields. Humanity is a perfect image.
Exploring.. yes.
Conquering.. yes. Is this a good thing ?
Helping the universe.. are you fucking kidding me !? :bugeye:
Uniting.. hardly.
Making various leaps in various fields.. yes, so ?
Humanity is a perfect image.. to you maybe, not to me.

This says it all, he means that is how he 'perceives' himself or would like to be, like a hollow supremacist.
I would say there is something precious, innocent, fair, loving, just, moral and good in some humans but equally there is more people with much degeneracy and evil that is more common than the former so the overall estimation of 'humanity' would be a lower grade. We all know there are just some people who have a better heart and others who embrace evil consciously or are born leaning to that side.
The problem is if those who have no respect for other's lives, they should be the ones who duke it out and kill eachother and that would be real and pure justic. But that is not how it works in this messy and unfair world and the innocent and those who do have respect for others lives get caught up and victimized because of them.
Tell me why Humanity is not a perfect image.
And you are a Human, why are you talking as if you are ashamed of what you are? What if you were born a frog? Consider yourself lucky.
What do you think of pollution, war, animal cruelty, murderers, rapists, thieves to name just a few ? How does that fit in your 'perfect picture' ?
Humans are destroying the world. Did you ever hear the words MASS EXTINCTION !?
A majority of the nation's biologists are convinced that a "mass extinction" of plants and animals is underway that poses a major threat to humans in the next century, yet most Americans are only dimly aware of the problem, a poll says.
The rapid disappearance of species was ranked as one of the planet's gravest environmental worries, surpassing pollution, global warming and the thinning of the ozone layer, according to the survey of 400 scientists commissioned by New York's American Museum of Natural History.
The poll's release yesterday comes on the heels of a groundbreaking study of plant diversity that concluded than at least one in eight known plant species is threatened with extinction. Although scientists are divided over the specific numbers, many believe that the rate of loss is greater now than at any time in history.
"The speed at which species are being lost is much faster than any we've seen in the past -- including those [extinctions] related to meteor collisions," said Daniel Simberloff, a University of Tennessee ecologist and prominent expert in biological diversity who participated in the museum's survey. [Note: the last mass extinction caused by a meteor collision was that of the dinosaurs, 65 million years ago.]
Most of his peers apparently agree. Nearly seven out of 10 of the biologists polled said they believed a "mass extinction" was underway, and an equal number predicted that up to one-fifth of all living species could disappear within 30 years. Nearly all attributed the losses to human activity, especially the destruction of plant and animal habitats.
Among the dissenters, some argue that there is not yet enough data to support the view that a mass extinction is occurring. Many of the estimates of species loss are extrapolations based on the global destruction of rain forests and other rich habitats.
Among non-scientists, meanwhile, the subject appears to have made relatively little impression. Sixty percent of the laymen polled professed little or no familiarity with the concept of biological diversity, and barely half ranked species loss as a "major threat."
The scientists interviewed in the Louis Harris poll were members of the Washington-based American Institute of Biological Sciences, a professional society of more than 5,000 scientists.
From http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/features/2005/01/31_olsond_biodiversity/ :
"Biodiversity is being irreversibly destroyed by human activities at an unprecedented rate. . . (demanding) urgent and significant action."
New plant and animal species are emerging, University of Minnesota ecology professor David Tilman says, but not nearly fast enough to make up for the toll caused by human activity.
"That's sort of a 1 million to 4 million year process, and yet we are causing species to be lost at rates of 100 to 1000 times faster," he says.
Yeah, we're perfect
