Any aficionados of Arabic music here?

Two examples of Arab pop I could find on Youtube:

Amr Diab: Tamally Maak

Samira Said and Cheb Mami: Youm Wara Youm

I thought music was against Islam?

But I did like this...Jordanese girl on "World Idol"? The Pop Idol/American Idol/Canadian Idol world show, which had winners from the various versions of the Idol shows compete. She did horribly, but I thought she was the second best.

Only for/by Wahabis, and even they listen to music!

I have always loved Arabic music. It's so otherworldly and haunting. I used to have about a dozen Arabic and Turk albums as I grew up, the only white boy in the 'burbs with a taste for things Arab I'm sure. Of course they are all gone now since albums went extinct years ago. I should have saved them.

That comparison would enrage a real Christian. Stop with the generalizations.

I have a sampler with songs by:
Abdel Ali Slimani
Abdy
Dania
Amr Diab
Hisham Abbas
Hamid El Shaeri
Fadela & Sahraoui
Natasha Atlas
Khaled
Sawt el Atlas
Cheb Tarik

Are any of those singers considered stars in their countries? I've heard Natasha Atlas before, she's got a modest international career going, collaborating with people like William Orbit.

I enjoy the CD. But it tends toward repetitive, moody "groove" music. Hardly any instrumental solos. Like "club music" in the West. Good for a party background, good for dancing, but not something I'd go to hear in a concert. Most of the songs have one vamp that repeats over and over and over again.

God, Samira Said is hot.

Anybody else got any more recent music? I have no idea where to start if I was to look for Arabic music.

My exposure to Arabic music is restricted to what my friends were listening to in Saudi, but even I know that Amr Diab, Hisham Abbas, Khaled, Natacha Atlas, Cheb Tarik are pretty well known. There are others like Cheb Mami, Umm Kulthum, Hani Shaker etc but I'm not as familiar with them. Plus, I think the lyrics also play a role in the popularity of the songs so possibly the music alone may not be reflective of the attraction.

I can't say I specifically like Arabic music and I don't have any recordings but some of it can be exquisite, as can be said of most ethnic music.

A compilation I found interesting -

Sif Safaa: New Music From The Middle East (http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/1230387/a/Sif+Safaa:+New+Music+From+The+Middle+East.htm)

Released in 1995; includes artists from Egypt, Saudi Arabia & Iraq, IIRC.

A bit less "poppy" than some of the links in this thread, tho' perhaps it's pop to them - or was, anyway.
