View Full Version : Apocalypto

I swore I aready had a thread on this but it isn't there now so here's an article in Variety about the upcoming release of Apocalypto, Mel Gibson's epic film about the fall of the Mayan Empire.
Filmed entirely in the ancient Mayan used in those times it appears to be a real history based story of this extinct civilization.
Filming was delayed for months because of hurricane Georges. The storm battered Guatemala, where the movie was made.
I personally can't wait to see it.

You know, it is odd: Though you are gay and a communist, we share many similar likes.

As for your last sentence, I've heard that before. Stereotypes are almost always wrong.:)
Yeah, I saw the previews for this during The Prestige and it looks awesome. I've always enjoyed Mel Gibson's epic movies. Can't wait to check it out!

I saw this Sunday. I was a wee bit disappointed as I thought more of Mayan history would be presented, instead it is just a backdrop as the personal story of a forest dwelling family unfolds.
Graphic violence, great soundtrack, breathtaking recreation of a Mayan city and the ever fascinating arriving Spanish in their galleons bouncing in the coastal surf for the first time.
With all the hype I hoped I'd learn something. It's an action film only. New turf but another blood drenched action film nonetheless.
6 out of 10 Stars.
invert_nexus 12-11-06, 10:13 PM It looks interesting.
Hopefully he finds a way to get a dig in at the Jews... err... I mean Christ-killers.

Hopefully he finds a way to get a dig in at the Jews... err... I mean Christ-killers.Not that I noticed! But (SPOILER!) the last image you see as the film fades to black is an ornate Christian cross being held by a well dressed Spaniard on the boat, staring curiously into the trees.

invert_nexus 12-11-06, 10:20 PM I used your profile to search all the threads you've started to find your other Apocalypto thread.
I used your profile to search all the threads you've started to find your other Apocalypto thread. There is only one other Apocalypto thread I started, which was not on the Arts & Culture page. So I started another, for a grand total of two.
Anyone interested in the movie out there?? Anyone seen it??
invert_nexus 12-11-06, 10:35 PM Umm.
Yeah.
I just did you a favor and found it for you. That's all.
I'm not getting on you about starting a duplicate thread or anything.

 Oops! I thought you were bitch-slappin the Genji. I just realized that is the original thread. I didn't think to look for it there if the Arts page is limited to one page.
Sorry! I'm testy on Monday's.;)

Genji and I discussed this once too. He had a nice explanation. He said we were so far apart that we were bumping into each other on the other side.
PS Did anyone see the Saturday Nite Live satire on this movie? It was just the normal movie trailer with subtitles added about how the Jews were coming to destroy the world. It sounds lame, but was pretty funny.

infoterror 12-12-06, 02:24 AM I think it was funny that the cop who arrested Gibson was indeed Jewish.
I'm not going to see Apocalypto. I'd prefer to remember the glory days of Mayan civilization, not its downfall.
