I just got back from seeing Apocalyptica live. Fabulous group, great show. They're a Finnish metal band... except instead of guitars they play four solo cellos. The cello is an amazingly versatile instrument, with a range that extends from low C on a bass guitar up into a guitar's high notes. They got famous in Europe for playing Metallica covers, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tN6_1dJveM&feature=related) but they also write their own headbanger tunes. On the covers they duplicate the guitar solos effortlessly, and on their own compositions they do some crazy multiple-soloing. They use wah-wah pedals and all the standard rock and roll electronics, and they're quite versatile, going from a lyrical melodic piece to something really bass-heavy with distorted bowing. Tonight they brought a drummer (who was hard-pressed to keep up with them) and Corey Taylor, the lead singer for American bands Slipknot and Stone Sour, who sang a couple of his songs as well as a really spooky version of David Bowie's "Heroes" in German ("Helden").

I couldn't believe the crowd, the 9:30 Club (in Washington DC) holds about 900 people and it was packed with screaming fans. When they asked, "How many of you people play the cello?" about a hundred hands went up.

That would be an amazing show, and I would love to see them live. I am very jealous of you, Fraggle. Do you know who the drummer was?

The blond guy, the one who speaks the best English, introduced him. But he's still pretty difficult to understand, and the crowd was very enthusiastic and noisy. I couldn't even tell if it was a Finnish name. He was perfect for the gig, jumping up and down off his stool, and drenched with sweat.

I think the drummers name is Mikko Sirén.Yes. I looked them up on Wikipedia and it said they hired him about three years ago. I remember when he was introduced it sounded something like Mickey or Miguel in all the noise. I only have one of their earliest CDs, "Inquisition Symphony," and there's nobody on it but them. Apparently they've added full-time percussion since then. I didn't realize they've changed their lineup a couple of times, I had no idea there were that many rock-and-roll cellists out there. :)

I managed to catch them at a festival with a few thousand others and they were pretty impressive, a very unique act that you'd think would have been out of place but actually really impressed the crowd. Cristina Scabbia(Lacuna Coil) even performed with them at one point and it was really good. Finnish metal is pretty amazing though.

-I havent seen Apos live yet and I live in Finland :o
-Reflections was the first album that impressed me enough, mainly because they started to compose more of their own songs, and those sounds like no other songs, mainly because those are composed with the instrument in hand.

-What like in Apos that they have whole variety of different style of songs,
and yes Christina Scabbia is HOT...
