I've always eaten peanuts with the shells on for as long as I can remember. It's delicious, an excellent form of fiber, and has never had any rough effects on my digestion, yet it's considered weird. Anyone else eat peanuts like this?

Yes! I used to eat them separately, peanut first then the shell. But I recently discovered that if you just eat them together whole, it tastes kinda like a peanut butter sandwich. Peanut shells tend to be salty which may be why I like it so much as I have chronic low blood pressure. But it's just delicious. If you haven't tried it, you should.

Maybe you should try it then? Sunflower seed shells are tougher I think. If you like them, maybe you'll like the peanut shells.

Has that ever bothered your digestion? Because I see no effect and I'm beginning to wonder why we're told not to eat them to begin with.

Hmmmm sounds a bit odd to me, isn't awfully dry and hard to swallow?

Not as much as you'd think. Especially with the peanut still inside.

However, with the peanut still inside you run the risk of aspirating those little flaking skin bits of the peanut...know what I mean?

And can contain pesticides and all sorts of nasty stuff!

Really, you might be harming yourself by eating peanuts shells.

Yeah I don't eat them very often either. But when I do, it's the only way. ;)

Do you wash the peanutshells off first Mrow?

Unfortunately no...it wouldn't be salty then and would probably taste like wood. Can someone check on this? I haven't found anything yet.

Same. I love boiled peanuts in the shell.. but without eating the shells of course. I actually prefer boiled peanuts to roasted ones. The salt in the water soaks through the shell and into the peanut itself. Especially when they are freshly boiled.. My grandmother used to put fresh chilly in the water sometimes and it gave it that little kick. I like it with and without the chilli.:)

Mmmmmm freshly boiled peanuts..

Yummy.

*Sigh*.. I've been craving 'compote' tamarind for days and now I want boiled peanuts as well. Damn it!:bawl:

I love the pretty purple color of the skins too, after boiling.

I try not to eat peanuts if possible. It kills me when the neighbor lady brings over peanut brittle for xmas. I love it, but my family suffers if I eat peanuts. :fart:

My husband eats sunflower and pumpkin seeds in the shell. I just can't do it. I can't even eat pomegranate seeds. I chew the juice off and toss the seeds.

I've never even heard of this. Do you need special peanuts to do it, or do you just go out and buy a bag of salted in-the-shell peanuts?

My husband eats sunflower and pumpkin seeds in the shell. I know several people who eat the sunflower seed shells. The funny thing is, I didn't know pumpkin seeds even had a shell until a few years ago. I just figured the whole shell+seed was the seed. Then I saw someone taking off the shell before eating the seed, and I learned you didn't have to eat the shell. I like the shell more than the seed itself though.

Raw peanuts, usually fresh from the farm.

Yep. It goes that really dark purple colour. My mother can actually roast peanuts in the shell and the inner skin also goes that colour.

You need raw peanuts still in the shell. My grandmother used to boil them in a pressure cooker with lots of salt and sometimes some chilli. My mother also boils them in a pressure cooker, making sure the peanuts are well covered in salted water. I suppose you can do it in a regular pot, but it would take a long time. It's cooked when the outer hard shell has a softened a bit and becomes slightly squishy.

No, but knowing that fruit and vegetables are treated with pesticides and insecticides, it would be prudent to wash/peel them.
Better to err on the side of caution.

Peanuts in the shell, yep, oranges with the rind (like an apple), yep, kiwis same way, unpeeled potatoes,

but only trustworthy organic or fresh off the farm, and washed, not so much for the pesticides as the fungicides. Anything stored commercially for a while has a good chance of being treated with fungicides, and fungi are tough - those chemicals have to be nasty.

Another problem with not shelling peanuts is that they can mold inside the shell where you can't see, and you don't want to eat that - tastes terrible, and if it produces aflatoxin (as a lot of peanut mold does) it's not at all good for you.

So what if you shell it first and eat the peanut and shell separately? Would I be able to see that?

Does it taste different to boil peanuts in the shell and then eat them.
As opposed to buying unshelled peanuts and heating them up in the microwave?
