XRumer appears to be a forum spamming tool. My initial idea was that it searches for the forum text I initially saw (see the first post, here). That appears not to be the case; to date, people Googling for XRumer appear simply to be trying to research it, presumably wondering why people are posting about it to their forum. The best explanation I've found for this mystifying behavior is that (1) the makers of XRumer used it to post to many forums, (2) helpful people on those forums then looked for XRumer and responded with links, and then (3) the main XRumer page got a lot of linkage for this reason. Sort of a viral linkage marketing ... thing.

Later, I came across the theory that this post was in fact some pretty clever viral marketing. By pretending to ask the forum's members about XRUMER, the XRUMER marketer could induce at least some people to search on it and link it, causing Google to rate it highly without actually themselves spamming. Neat.
Sounds like a spammer's dream. And like Alexis is up to no good. And, damn, I've fallen for it. Just call me shit-for-brains (I like it).
