Anybody here into Freespace-2 Science and Physics?

Hello all: Anybody here know a lot about the PC space-combat game Freespace-2?? Would you explain to me what kind of energy do Freespace's ships use? And would it be feasable to forsee in the near or far future space battles and inter-galatic travel? with jump-nodes perhaps? Do we have that technology today?
I would appreciate your views and comments on this matter

    Space combat Mechanics

As most projectiles fired in space tend to deviate from their course after about 2 miles the viable combat range of most weapons is about 1 mile to 1.5 miles. This means that combat in space is usually short brutal and bloody. The preferred attack plan is to cripple your enemy and then destroy them at your leisure. In combat foldships have a slight edge when it comes to manoeuvrability and speed, but when it comes to sheer fire power the Ion Drive ships slightly outclass them. The Phases that a ship can act in is determined by the captains dexterity (cause he's the guy in charge

    ).

    Gunnery Skill

If the gunnery roll is successful then the enemy ship is hit. If a ship's engines take damage equal to three-quarters the engine's total ID then the ships is crippled. This means that the ship cannot move and it's manoeuvrability drops to 0. This damage is not possible to fix in under an hour and so the ship is effectively motionless for the remainder of combat. Foldship's may still fold no matter what state their engines are in.

I would appreciate your comments and views on Freespace-2

    Thank u all

    Its just a game

    Its a good one although...

Maybe Fusion Plants giving an uninterruptible rate of
    energy...

The spacebattle is not very logic..

Projectile weapons in the future like those in
    Freespace2 are not very logic..

Today we even have better than those..

the future will have some kind of nano-homing device
    for each Projectile/Energy blast...

Freespace2 battles or anyother spacegame are more
to deliver fun, since they all seem like WW2 dodgefights

There is no drag in space

Of course it's supposed to be a sci-fi game, it's not realistic, but how many games can u count out there that are realistic? Most regular air combat simulation games like the Mig-29, Janes Combat are not realistic anyways
The trouble with the real world space combat is that it isn't all that fun... or so the theory and implementation in space combat games up to now has indicated. Why is that? Well because in space there is no "drag" so once you accelerate to a give speed you will coast at that speed and direction forever. So, in order to turn a space ship around and fly in the other direction you have to accelerate "backwards" until you stop and then keep on accelerating until you are up to speed. The implications for dogfighting are that if you have high speed you simply fly through the furball and keep going... minutes or hours later once you stop and come back the battle might be over or you might be out of fuel!

The ultimate goal in space combat is to see who can pump out more energy effectively than the other guy can handle.

While energy shield is still something far from reach, armored plating that can deflect projectiles and energy beams are something that we can do today.

Space combat will mainly be done in BVR (beyond visual range) using energy beams and guided missiles. There will be hardly any bullet moments in space combat.
