I'm a life member, joined in '66 in Chicago. Seems to me there ought to be some, or maybe some eligible, on sciforums.
My IQ is midway between Madonna and Bill Gates (according to an Internet IQ test - which I'm sure is reliable Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! ). I don't know if that qualifies me for Mensa, and I don't care.
I don't know if I'm eligible, but my IQ is about 140. But I don't like IQ tests. For those who don't know, Mensa membership requires being in the 98th percentile of an IQ test. What exactly do you get out of being a member of Mensa?
They've got a really great monthly publication with a lot of interesting articles. I live too far away from the local group to attend many gatherings, but we e-mail. If anybody's interested (I'm not soliciting memberships) visit the American Mensa web site. Most of the site is only available to members, though.
Most of the Mensa type problems (if a cube has 4 edges that are green, how many orange edges are touching Mary's Grandpa?) I can't stand. Maybe it's because my IQ is low and I'm just unable to do the problems. That must be why I hate them.
i passed the test that wolud allow me enty to mensa, but i couldnt be fucked paying to send it off to them when i would have to fly 1000km to auckland in order to see any other members
has any mensa member done anything useful for society? I mean on the level that a garbage man does every day?
I once passed their initiation puzzle in a newspaper, which made me eligible to join. I received their proposal forms and whatnot while I was away on holiday and because I was late in replying (i never actually replied) they sent me a really rude letter telling me not to waste their time and money if I wasn't serious about joining. I say FUCK THEM!
...among others, Isaac Asimov (author and past international president), Anthony Zerbe (Hollywood and TV character actor), at least one porn star.

According to an online IQ Test i've got an I.Q of 154 (which, as SideShowBob pointed out, must be accurate) But i don't see the point in joining - if they'd even let me join seeing as i don't actually know my Accurate I.Q Anyone know any FREE and accurate online IQ tests, im lazy and cheap Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
the Mensa tests I've checked out on the web, seem ludicrously difficult and would probably show that I have an IQ of 60.
I've always thought of Mensa as paying for proof that you are smart.... which kind of proves the opposite....
Yes. I was wondering the same. What has Mensa done as a collective force of intellectuals besides give themselves a labels and neat puzzles to do?
from their website: Mensa members find opportunities to contribute to the betterment of society through volunteer activities within their communities. Many Mensa groups offer scholarships for gifted students. The Gifted Children Resource Program compiles and provides information for gifted children at the national and local levels. that is all that is covered in the what mensa does for the community section
I joined mensa when I moved to a new town, basically as a way of meeting persons of the opposite sex (well, I was young then). After a few meetings I realised it wasn't for me - the only thing the members had in common was that they were all fairly bright and all liked 'real ale' (I don't). So I let the membership lapse. And I didn't meet any persons of the opposite sex. Artoo.
