View Full Version : Another question while I'm here...
Giambattista 01-19-07, 08:21 AM ... about OS X.
My MacBook has 10.4.8 installed. I've noticed that programs seem to crash more frequently than I'm used to.
It's pretty new (the computer), but I'm kind of taken aback by how many times I've experienced a program just quitting for the computer being so new. It seems that a program closes inexplicably about every other day, sometimes more often than that. I don't think my PC crashes programs that often. My older Mac never seemed to. I don't know, but it just seems to me that this is happening frequently enough to catch my attention as being out of the ordinary.
Should I be concerned? Anyone else have frequent crashes on 10.4, especially of certain programs? Are there known shortcomings of the operating system that would be causing this to happen?

its time to buy a new computer. Imacs sux.
Giambattista 01-19-07, 08:25 AM You're really helpful!
It's not an Imac, it's a laptop. And it IS new.

no...seriously...sell it on ebay...and buy another one.
Its easier.
Giambattista 01-19-07, 08:45 AM Easier than what? I'm asking if anyone else is having issues like that, and what the cause could be. I'm not going to go selling this one so soon after I got it unless I absolutely have too.
It's not like I can't use any programs at all, but rather that programs seem to crash more frequently than I'm used to, and I don't think I'm just imagining it. It's annoying of course, but could also cause problems if a program quits at a critical point.
Stryder 01-19-07, 08:52 AM The only thing I can suggest without knowing anything about OSX is what I learnt from an install I did many years ago with Win98.
The computer in question kept crashing, it crashed with the OS and it crashed with the programs. I at the time tried reinstalls, but it would crash during them too. On one such reinstall attempt I spotted something odd, where the Windows files couldn't find the folder "C:/winfows"
That one character alteration nailed what the problem was, the files as they were being copied have to go through the RAM and the RAM was suffering from a corrupt address causing the installation(s) to fail.
I ended up buying new RAM (Which I doubt you'll have to do) and installed, everything went smoothly. The OS had no corruptions and therefore didn't crash and the same could be said for the programs.
What I'm suggesting is that perhaps the programs that crash so much have been corrupted through a corrupted install, It DOESN'T have to be RAM related, a corruption could be caused by a dirty/scratched install disc, dirty CD/DVD reader heads or even a corrupted downloaded file.
All I can suggest is if you attempt a reinstall of the programs, make sure it's JUST the programs as fault, if the OS is at fault too then it will be potentially hardware related.
Giambattista 01-19-07, 09:25 AM I hope it's not hardware related. Even so, it isn't exactly killing me. Plenty of programs work without ever crashing. Some do occasionally. One that does most often is the Opera browser. I also use it alot more than other programs, and generally have quite a few windows/tabs open. It seems to have the most problems with alot of pages open at once. It may just have trouble with memory or something, dunno.
About the bad installations... I don't know. It's certainly not a problem I encounter often (or at all???).
Well, I'll see if any other mac users say anything. My mind may be exaggerating the problem, too, but it just seems that I'm noticing it a little too often to be just a coincidence.
Anyhow, thanks for your time.
lets assume you do maintenence on the os and all checks out
identify the prog
note circumstance of crash
peruse logs
go to developer site
interact
Meanwhile, 01-19-07, 01:44 PM Universal Binary? Have you updated your apps as much as possible from PPC to UB, thereby detouring Rosetta completely, the Intel machine's PPC code translator or whatever it's called? And if I'm not mistaken even an Intel's version of Tiger is not completely Universal.
I think most of us are waiting for Adobe before jumping onto Intel.

Gustavus,
What program do you suggest using for maintenance and the like? Is there something built in to the operating system? I'm not completely familiar with all that 10.x does. Only had the computer for a few months. Much has changed since 8.6...
I think the crashing has been restricted for the most part to a few key programs, especially, like I said, Opera. It seems to dislike Google videos when there's a bunch of pages open. Streaming video is tedious enough (like when it pauses for no reason when there's plenty of buffered video), but sometimes it freezes the program and then crashes it.
There was one program that I just messed around with alittle. I think it was bundled with the system install discs, called Comic Life. Apparently, you make cartoon strips with it. Anyhow, each time I tried to save this silly project I made, it would crash after I hit save. It seemed a little weird to me.
Maybe this is more the fault of individual programs, I don't know. I'm having trouble ascertaining whether this is an abnormal amount of crashing, or just that since computers and programs have both increased in complexity, that the number of errors has also increased.
What meanest thou: peruse the logs?
Thus ends the interaction...
for now.

I'm not sure how many programs I am using that are UBs. Aren't those the same as FAT used to be (both 68k and PPC), except in this case Wintel and MacIntel (or whatever you wanna call it)? I've heard of this Rosetta. I believe it emulates PPC from OS X and up. Not sure why it couldn't do 9 as well. They weren't that different, were they? I don't know much about that, sorry.
Which Adobe is this you speak of?
Giambattista...excuse me for my view of life and reality.
But...by this time...the countless replies and threads you made about the problems with your MAC...the neurons burned in agony...
by this time you could have sold your laptop on ebay...got the money...than bought a new one with a bit extra cash added and went on with life...cherishable...huggable life that comes to us like a puppy and than goes to sleep once fed with milk.

Who really cares about "countless" replies and threads? I think your remedy to my computer problems is silly. Selling it on ebay as a used item would NOT get me a bit extra cash. That's a silly notion. Even if I sold it as new, and got the list price for it, that would not constitute extra cash. You're being unrealistic.
But then again, it's obvious you have a crush on me. AND my flying saucers. ;) I've known this for quite some time.
:o I love this purple face. I'll be using it often, I think.
Now tell me, what is that avatar of yours saying?
player of emotions... hee hee hee...

:bugeye: im straight, dude.
As for my suggesting you to sell it, I am not being silly.
I sold it myself and I got cash.
I sold pentium M dell laptop for 350. Bought a better one for 500 with processor AMD athlon. Believe me it work...just advertise your product with awsome pictures. and details. and add some cheap extra stuff. try it.
Giambattista 01-20-07, 08:44 PM Okay, straight dude, whatever. I really don't need a new laptop. Mine is already new. Except for an occasional crash of a program, it's perfectly functioning.

Giambattista 01-20-07, 09:29 PM Aww, isn't that cute?!?! Too bad dogs are pretty much evil. Maybe this one has hope?
Meanwhile, 01-21-07, 08:04 AM I don't know, anything really. My old Mac (which I still have, by the way) I used mainly for audio recording, in the end. I really liked the program I was using on it (multi-track recorder), but the age of the computer, small hard drive (like 4-6gb), lack of CD-burner (external SCSI burner is slow and somewhat tiresome) and stuff like no USB started to wear out my patience. That plus my moodiness had slowed down my enthusiasm for dabbling in music making anyhow.
I'm just starting to get into using my new laptop for recording, though I haven't actually recorded anything serious yet. Testing it, more.
I figure, if I could pick up another decent laptop for a couple hundred dollars that could run older software like that multi-track prog (as well as a few games and stuff), why not? I'd need to think it over. It may or may not be worth it. I hate it when something looks like an exciting buy, and then doesn't get used enough, or live up to its promises. It happens. Such a bitter disappointment!
p.s. I really liked the Kaleidoscope program. Not program, really, it was a system add-on, can't think of what they're called at the moment, but it could change the appearance and design/color of windows and menus and all that. You could select different schemes. Like "skins" for programs, but instead for the entire OS.
It was cool. They don't have one for OS X. At least not yet. Though the last time they mentioned the possibility of one was at least a year or two ago, so I don't know if they plan on it or not.
So not only are you among the early adopters (or is it adapters?) to Intel, but also jumped ship from the 20th. Big migration; sharp learning curve -- congrats.
You might want to look into Apple's GarageBand -- try a P2P to d/l a copy, or dish out 80 bucks for the entire suite of iLife apps that it belongs to, but check Apple's website for more info. (I thought new Macs had iLife pre-installed.) Later on, with a need to upscale, look into finding a copy of Apple's expensive Logic Pro.

But I don't recommend it; I've heard bad feedback entailing haxies, especially with Intel machines, and when updating the System itself. It also needs a serial number that is impossible to find but I think I have it somewhere -- if you absolutely want it.

How much ram do you have? With OS X and Intel you should have at least a gig.
Have fun exploring!

Adobe industry software that have no universal versions of their CS2 apps (except for Acrobat): Intel designer users are not having fun, hence most other non-Intel designer users who are on stand by before upgrading their hardware. CS3 Photoshop universal is currently being publicly beta tested.

I'm a pioneer, of sorts? Gee, that's the nicest thing anyone's said to me all year.

They do have those progs installed. I've been getting the hang of Garageband, but haven't done any multi-track recording yet.
The more advanced models of the laptops actually came with Logic Pro installed, at least where I got mine. Alas, I did not get one. I suppose it is possible to find a copy, legal or otherwise.

Thanks for those links. I'll keep them around.

I bought the cheapest model, so I got 512MB of RAM. I think for my uses, that will probably be adequate. If not, well...
Have fun exploring!
Thank you.

That's too bad. It sounds interesting.

Oh! You must recall FinderPop from the OS 8/9 era? He just updated FP and it's fully Intel compatible. Do a search-field for it at MacUpdate (or the pathetically slow-loading VersionTracker).
And I just came across this:
Uno (http://gui.interacto.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=33&Itemid=47)
Not fully a GUI metamorphosis, but a nice variation -- and no nasty haxies or cereal numbers involved. You can easily uninstall at will.

There aren't many Mac users here, but for those who have shown themselves already, we're in fine company. ;)
