I haven't really been a fan of anime movies or manga so far, but over the weekend at a friends place I watched Spirited Away (http://www.amazon.com/Spirited-Away-Hayao-Miyazaki/dp/B00005JLEU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1222880665&sr=8-1) and Howls Moving Castle (http://www.amazon.com/Howls-Moving-Castle-Chieko-Baisho/dp/B000CDGVOE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1222880672&sr=8-1) and I have to say I was enamoured. I loved the creativity in the depictions, the development of the characters and absolute art of the productions.

What are your favorite anime movies? And why?

Those are great. You have to see Princess Mononoke (http://www.amazon.com/Princess-Mononoke-Hisaya-Morishige/dp/B00003CXBK/ref=pd_cp_d_2?pf_rd_p=413864101&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00005JLEU&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0BG28CNW0B9CGV1P732Z) too. It has an interesting environmental message.

I try not to watch them to often There is only so much animated nudity and violence a person can handle..
That's what I used to think, I used to think people into anime we simply perverted geeks, but then somehow I found myself watching "nausicaa of the valley of the wind" and I was blown away, it's a simply beautifull masterpiece, nothing untoward about it at all.
I've since watched spirited away and kiki's delivery service(which were good) and one about a pig man (which wasn't that good, still ok and not perverse), but nausicaa is still the best.
Actually sam, if I know you (and I do via our many PM exchanges) I think you would agree, you should watch it.

Those studio Ghibli movies are quite brilliant. Some really good fantasy. I would recommend Spirited Away over Alice in Wonderland, which is supposedly a classic.

Howls Moving Castle and Spirited Away were my favortes but all the ones mentioned so far are good.

I have been told that Grave of the Fireflies is very sad so be prepared.

I've only gotten into the adult anime like Ghost in The Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Ergo Proxy and Akira. Probably not family material :p

Japanese animation is great!! I dont watch hentai either but Ive watched many great movies and series. Aside from Ghibli Studies films and Miyazakis films, one's like The Place Promised in Our Early Days,Summer in Andalusia,Steamboy, Perfect Blue, Oseam, Nitaboh, Mind Game.. the list goes on and on. And that is one of the reasons I like anime so much. There is so much of it to watch. I think there are like 55 anime series currently running in Japan right now.

I read three of the Earthsea books as a teenager even before I read Lord of the Rings. So I was really looking forward to this movie but it was slow and frustrating.

I don't know if they filter based on your IP address by there's a pretty good streaming site for anime televison and movies (that don't have an English/US distribution license)

Fist of the North Star(Hokuto no Ken) kicked ass.

Kenshiro >>> all other anime/manga characters.

http://img234.imagevenue.com/loc207/th_71982_Kenshiro_122_207lo.jpg

It's still the best because it was and still is outrageously outlandish in the lead's actions. I doubt you will find a better anime/manga, which was created with the throughbred manga fan in mind.

So it gets kudos from me, and i've seen a shitload of anime/manga tv shows and movies.

A lot are the same rushed, poor, samey shows everytime. So yeah, check it out.........you may like it.....depends if you're male or female, if you'll like it or not.

Fists of the Northstar was good. I love the martial arts/samurai/ninja/swordplay genres in general, series and movies. Shura no Toki: Age of Chaos, Samurai 7, Basilisk, Beserk , Claymore, Kemonozume... on and on :)

I think Tales from Earthsea was Miyazaki's son Goro. Anyways, in my opinion anything from Ghibli Studios is worth watching. For instance even though Miyazaki's newest film Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea wasn't the greatest it was still fun to watch.
