If somebody (eg. Bill Gates) would offer you a payment of 100.000$ if you sign a contract that you will never use internet in any form again, would you take that? (The punishment for breaking the deal would mean paying Gates 1.000.000$...)
100.000 wouldn't be enough, because I would have to change careers...and I have no other skills...Therefore I need some money to live on.
RE:spuriousmonkey I've forwarded your response to Bill and he is willing to make a special arrangement for people who are Internet professionals. He will willingly listen to your suggestions: how much would it take to get you away from Internet for all time, name you price.
first of all, i would like euros...and about 500.000€ would be the minimum. But I would be more happy with 1.000.000€.
K, a million of [doesn't matter what] is just not counted as money these days! Besides, in a near future, most of careers will depend on internet. I say 100000000000000 euro would be more acceptable.... Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
REwhitewolf I do not think so. I suspect Bill wants to get rid of Internet because it polutes his windows with viruses. He has enough dope to make Internet far away history. Smart people will sell first and get the most money, if you wait (too) long you may get nothing: there will be no internet to pay you to stay off.
Like what? What would be a good substitute to the "world at the fingertips" (I dont like the metaphor but it's still valid in some sense)?
Monkey Rant I read this interesting letter in new scientist about the how commercial/professional the internet is. The author of the letter came to the conclusion was that it was slightly nonsense that commerce drives the internet. From the early beginning it was a universty invention and universities made the internet. And even now there have been little commercial successes on the internet, besides porn sites and a few other 'normal' sites. With that in mind we might come to the conclusion that the internet is the archenemy of capitalist entrepreneurs. And Bill gates must be the biggest entrepeur of the all. He must hate the internet for that reason alone. and then there is this virus thing you mentioned...ouch...he tried so hard to make windows bugfree (ouch) and then a bug comes along and messes with it. And then there is Kazaa, where everybody can download Bill's products for free. Ouch... but he gives a lot to charity, so he will go straight to heaven. amen...
REWhitewolf Why substitute it? Mankind has been living without it quite happily for thousands of years...You want to see the world, then get your bag and go...
RE:spuriousmonkey You are absolutely right: Lincoln said something like events control people (not the other way round) Internet (is it an event?) develops its own ways and the attempts to control it / or (mis)use it fail. I think it is going to survive Bill..
Re: Procop Humans lived w/o television for centuries. Toss it! Wanna see the world, get your bag and go... Please elaborate on "enough dope to make Internet far away history"
Well money is a form of physical strength translated/reserved in its value. (eg. 20$ banknote is an reservoir of big man's muscles engaged for the timespan of one hour). Bill Gates commands a big resevoir of such physical power in his shares. His money is a power. If the Big Money start a war against Internet (read above: it (internet) was a disappontment commercialy and is now used mainly by idealists, loners and perverts) than it is possible that internet will lose such a war. Can you give me then an example of an invention which survived being a dissapointment commertially (but survived on "idealistic basis")?
i only have net phriends. no1 sutibal to be my companion lives near me. besides i love progging and such. id say 750,500,000$ that i could pay the long distance bill to just call my friends. and liv eoff it for a while.
$100,000 is not enough. That is one year's hard work. And guys get a grip... $ sign comes before the amount and thousands are separated by a comma in English which you are typing in right now.
RE: cthulhus slave Well some would kill their mothers for an amount as high as $ 750,500,000....Would you consider to commint a murder to stay on-line? (Well I wouldn't kill anybody....but would I consider it...well, yes, I would, though, I woudn't do it actually.)
speaking of cthulu, "To Live is to Die", so don't worry your little head over this crap, okay Procop.
RE: fredx Well, now you got me: Universal internet password, which would open any site. Please mail it and you are the new owner of my soul.
