I love soccer. Soccer plays a big part in many countries sporting calender and is widely loved the world over - with the exception of the US it seems. What is it about the game that turns most American's off?

America did really well in the last World Cup (Got beat by Germany 1-0 in quarter finals) but it seemed like they received little support from their people back home.

The American women's team are probably the best female soccer side in the world also but again it would seem that this fact escapes most American's who show very little interest.

Do you see this interest growing slowly in the country or not given your obvious flare for the game?

Theres more interest than I would say as far as 10 years ago when the World Cup was played here. Theres alot of kids playing soccer but still the interest isnt there. I would say theres at least 8 sports leaps and bounds ahead of soccer as far as interest in concerned. Not only does soccer have to contend with the 3 major sports here in the U.S. but also golf and nascar are picking up along with things like the x-games and other types of sports, plus college athletics play major part in the sport landscape. Id go as far as to say more people care about wrestling than soccer.

Thing is, no one grew up watching soccer. The kids now arent growing up watching soccer either. And to be quite honest, soccer is somewhat of a boring sport, especially if you werent raised on it, you have a lesser patience for watching a soccer game end up 1-0, where as in baseball, a 1-0 game is a heck of a game considered a pitchers duel.

Ever heard the phrase "soccer mom"? It's popular here as a game for kids because it isn't too rough, and everyone gets to take part.

I can't understand why any team sport is followed by adults on TV.

really?why not?its fun to get into something, and plus you can have rivalry without it actually becoming serious (there are exceptions).sports are gradually replacing war.

What connection do I have to a sports team? The team isn't even made up of players from the area, AND they change around every year. It's the same mentality that leads to war, territorial apes fighting for dominance.

    Soccer is actually football.

    Americans should get into football.

Then why are there RIOTS at soccer games that lead to many people DYING? Why are there always players being taken away on strechers because they are knocked out and are in allot of pain?

Those teams are playing for fans with much more religious and cultural stake than in American sports.

    Not to mention nationalism.

I'm an American and I like Soccer.

Soccer, to me, is boring. It's just like hockey in that everyone goes back and forth nonstop with little points. Basketball is the same but at least there's more points involved. Baseball too, but is at least a bit more complex. Racing? Yawn.

American Football is the only sport I can really watch -- the rare times I do watch it -- since it's the most complex of all. So many different things to do that makes it not as repetetive as the rest. I really don't care for sports anyways. I can't understand the fascination of them. Playing sports is fun as hell but I can't stand how people can watch something they aren't involved in. Heck, at least playing video game sports gives you some sorta control over it all, heh.

American football and mixed-martial arts is all I care to watch. Everything else is too boring for my tastes.

    I agree kenworth.

All the cultural and religious tension is being channeled into the sport.

I think it helps to alleviate some of the feelings of powerlessness, hopelessness that these groups have.

Replacing war is an interesting point. I can't help but wonder what if the rest of the world felt as strongly about American football. Now you would have a whole lot of people with the same snese of nationalism watching a contact sport. A war if you will.

The very foundation of American Football is war. A battle in the trenchs, a ground strike as well as that of an air strike and an equal defense. Not to mention the very act of huddling to plan the next attack.

    Americans like war.

Soccer just doesn't fill that need. An and Iraqi Insurgent football team would be lame.

How do you jump from watching a sporting activity to starting a war? What is the thing that you believe makes a sport a war?

Wow.I respect your opinion but American Football is one of the slowest games ever invented.I often wondered why its called football since apart from the odd field goal (forgive me if that is the wrong expression) there is very little foot on ball action

    Just like war.

It's the group mentality, tribalism, supporting a violent battle against people you haven't even met.

I never even went to my school's "pep" rallies either, since there was no diversity of opinion. Maybe the other team was better, how should I know? And who cares if we are #1? It's just an ego thing.

Sports have rules, wars do not. Sports usually end with no injuries usually but wars end with many deaths and total destruction.
