This is in response to those who criticize the US giving cash to Israel, claiming that Israel can't survive with out it, and that in this transaction Israel is the one who benefits (either completely, or mostly), and the US is the one that loses.

I found this response on one website and thought I'd post it here:
I'll add a fourth: the Arab countries get much bigger subsidies in the form of oil revenues, which dwarf any sort of aid Israel gets. And a fifth: 'palestine's' budget consists entirely of donations, while US's assistance to Israel is just a fraction of Israel's annual budgets.

    In summary:
    1) The US benefits more from this transaction (by indirectly funding its own industries and by strengthening its own influence in Israel)
    2) This assistance is not unusual, as the US gives more than 100 other countries (even fake countries like 'palestine') assistance too
    3) Arab countries get much more cash from the US via oil revenues (and direct military and cash assistances too, just like Israel)

The bottom line is that there is no special treatment afforded to Israel, which means there is no unusual advantage that Israel enjoys through this assistance.

israel gets more foriegn aid from the states than the states gives to south america central america and africa, combined. and if a nation needs to be bribed not to conquer parts of other countries that is not a reason to keep giving them money

in Israel's sixty years of existence, it has received more US tax money than any other nation on earth.

During periods of recession, when Americans are thrown out of work, homes are repossessed, school budgets cut and businesses fail, Congress continues to give Israel massive amounts of our tax money; currently, about 7 million dollars per day.

On top of this, Egypt and Jordan receive large sums of money (per capita about 1/20th of what Israel receives) to buy their cooperation with Israel; and Palestinians also receive our tax money (about 1/23rd of that to Israel), to repair infrastructure that Israeli forces have destroyed, to fund humanitarian projects required due to the destruction wrought by Israel's military, and to convince Palestinian officials to take actions beneficial to Israel. These sums should also be included in expenditures on behalf of Israel.

When all are added together, it turns out that for many years over half of all US tax money abroad has been expended to benefit a country the size of New Jersey.

We definitely should stop giving out money and we should stop this war as well.

    1. stop funding Israel
    2. get out of Iraq
    3. focus on getting the economy on its feet

I don't like the idea of corporate welfare, farm subsidies, ethanol subsidies, etc. Why would I like this? That's still the taxpayer's money being spent.

No other country of Israel's size comes even remotely close to how much we give Israel in per capita aid. See this post in an earlier thread of mine. The sources for those numbers are in Crunchy Cat's post a little above mine.

Again, not in per capita spending. And again, so what? I want aid cut from the Arab countries as much as I want aid cut from Israel.

Again, the per capita spending figures proves that to be completely false.

It seems that you're opposed to the whole principle of subsidies. Fair enough. But the reality is that subsidies buy influence. No subsidies? No problem. But don't expect Israel to quietly take it up the ass next time some nutjob dictator launches scuds or suicide bombing campaigns, when the US askes it to.

Or are you opposed to Israel getting more than anyone else? Why? Given how much economic dividends Israel generates for the US, the ROI is huge and completely worth it. The 'palestinians' are getting the most aid per-capita in the history of aid, and what do they produce in terms of US influence or any other benefits? Absolutely nothing.

As per your per-capita numbers? You gotta be joking. The trillions that Arab nations get dwarf any sort of assistance that Israel gets -- per capita or otherwise.

Israel is it's own nation. I expect it to act in its best interests.

I'm against all foreign aid, and Israel's a big target because they happen to get a huge chunk of it.

Source to back up this claim? I find it hard to believe, and my numbers are backed up in my earlier post.

Are we still taking about direct foreign aid? If so, then where are your numbers and source? Mine are backed up via the numbers from the link in Crunchy Cat's post.

Just checked ashura's link (the excel) -- assuming the numbers he uses are correct... what does it prove? What does it have to do with the OP?

By the way, Israel's population: 6.5 million
    Egypt's population: 80 million

Presenting the aid figures in per-capita terms is misleading (Egypt has more than 12 times the amount of people as Israel). But why would you bother to mislead?

What's the per-capita aid that Congolese receive? They have a much greater need for it.

...is this a joke? The population figures are a part of my point! This means that per person Israel is getting much more bang for the buck. It means that Egypt's aid would increase by a ridiculous amount if we gave it the same per capita aid as Israel (I can do the math for you, if you'd like). It also completely disproves your notion that Israel isn't treated differently. Imagine if we gave a country the size of Egypt the same per capita aid, what the result would be. Right now compared to Israel they get a pittance.

2 problems with your source. One, it makes the claim of $300 per capita without providing an original source to back up the claims.

Two, that $300 per capita is from a group of nations, and not just the US.

He revealed that to add a 50% to 100% bonus to thWestern, Arab, and other governments plane $1 billion a year they already direct to 3.5 million Palestinian Arabs in the territories, contingent upon a crackdown on terrorist groups and the holding of credible elections in January 2005.

Post a link plz: total direct aid, and Israel's part. You can even present full and per-capita numbers.

But again, what is this going to prove? Even if you're right (and you probably aren't), I've shown how the net-beneficiary is the American public and American government.

All forms of aid - especially when comparing the aid that Arab countries receive. Many of them are lucky to be born above a sea of oil. The Arab nations allow foreign companies to come in, build the facilities, bring their own workers to extract the oil, refine the oil, and then pay the Arab governments HUGE AMOUNTS for the benefit of accidentally being born above that sea of oil. I.e. the Arab governments and local peoples do almost no work, produce no product, and get trillions of dollars for it. These dollars are de-facto aid.

Yes, but per capita Israel to Egypt in 2006 was 49.16 to 6.61. Imagine how much Egyptian aid would be if multiplied it by 7.

The link with the excel spreadsheet lets you see economic aid, military aid, and a combination of both. And what it does from my position is discard your first original point. I believe the American public would benefit even more if we simply didn't provide aid to begin with. If foreign aid is to be given, let it be done privately (which a lot is) and not through government.

You can't compare business transactions by private companies to governments giving away public taxpayer money. The two are not the same thing and can't both be considered to be aid. It's like saying when I import a product from China, the US government, through me, is giving the Chinese government aid.
