Uhh... EARTH TO ADAM!!! They change their names from their "slave names" (watch the arguement over the South Park flag on South Park where Cook changes his name) to more African-like names. And, in case you didn't know, many Africans from all regions of Africa are Muslims. Something like 50% of Africa is Muslim, much of which comes from the West Coast of Africa, which is where almost all slaves came to America from. If I recall correctly, Mike Tyson did convert to Islam. Actually, I'm 100% sure he did. Maybe you should read more before you make a post about this next time. And Nation of Islam followers are a minority of Black Muslims in the US, the more extreme branch. In case you didn't know, Arabic, Swahili, French, and English are the main languages of Africa (nowadays, Swahili has phased out of popularity in America because people *finally* realised it is spoken on the EAST coast, and not the WEST coast from where their ancestors were most likely taken. thus French has become the more popular language of heritage), and Islam and Christianity are the main religions. No, this doesn't just come from Arab states. Islam is ALL OVER AFRICA, and it was at the time as well.
farrakhan and the nation of islam are actually not classified as muslims - their following eminates from elija muhammed who is a self styled guru ... anyhow, americans switching to a new religion may add some diversity to the cultural fibre in the states ... probably their numbers still insignificant when compared to the masses of tribal africans that converted to christianity and islam through missionaries and trade contacts ...
You're joking, right? Slave names to more African names? As far as I can see, many are changing their names to more Middle Eastern type names. And you use South Park as a reference? I was under the impression most of Africa was either animist or christian, with islam being popular in the far north-east. Why read more about this? I already said Tyson claimed to be a muslim. Perhaps you should actually read my post before you make a post next time. Actually, prior to European colonisation, most of Africa was cut off from the rest by a simple lack of mobility. Very little would spread from one society to another. This is why Islam would be concentrated in the far north-east, and why even today much of Africa remains animist, apart from areas settled by christians.
Adam, why should I read your posts more carefully when you reply to mine without reading them at all? Arabs are dominant in Northern Africa from Djibouti in the far east (part of the Horn of Africa) to Morocco in the West. Most every Arab is Muslim. As for Muslims in areas that aren't mainly Arab in Africa: no. You must be thinking of southern Africa, the great empires of Africa were converted to Islam by traders from northern African Arab states.
Oh, and I'm using South Park as an example, not a reference. Take a look at Mohammed Ali, that wasn't always his name and he wasn't always Muslim.
GB GIL 's got a point on the african islam thing .. islam is predominant in kenya, sudan, tanzania, egypt, somalia, algeria, tunisia, morocco, zanzibar, libya, with large concentrations in south africa and zaire. that's more than a small share of africa ... but that might be hard to figure for a monkey from mars
