View Full Version : All-time best War Movies imagepro 08-08-02, 04:41 PM My personal favorite is All Quiet On The Western Front. One of the first on film and still has impact. postoak 08-08-02, 04:52 PM Yes, that's a good one. Others I like: Objective, Burma! Battle Cry The Longest Day Adam 08-08-02, 04:59 PM Battle Of The Bulge. The Desert Rats. Joeman 08-08-02, 05:24 PM Starship trooper Brolly 08-08-02, 05:37 PM we were soliders we were soliders and one more time we were soliders and in big letters WE WERE SOLIDERS :D Kupo fadingCaptain 08-08-02, 05:41 PM Huh never seen these movies. Even though its really not about war per se...my fave is probably Apocolypse Now. Patton is also great. The 1st half of full metal jacket is classic. I thought Saving Private Ryan was good. I dunno if there is an all-time best. %BlueSoulRobot% 08-08-02, 06:05 PM Originally posted by imagepro My personal favorite is All Quiet On The Western Front. One of the first on film and still has impact. Yeah, that's my favourite one as well. :) Another that I liked, but doesn't count as "war epic" would be Three Kings. I found it very meaningful, despite the *ahem* beginning. :D Tyler 08-08-02, 06:18 PM Gotta give my nod to Full Metal Jacket. And I don't think anyone's yet mentioned Tora Tora Tora! Brolly 08-08-02, 06:30 PM guys you going to have a huge impact from Thor why let just say that he was a serious fan of nam and little bit on wwII film Brolly 08-08-02, 06:31 PM i forgot me kupo kupo Thor 08-08-02, 06:36 PM Right *Cracks knuckles* All time best is PLATOON It is a classic. It is so powerful and moving. Its also very metaphoric. The contrast in characters is great. Heres the list: Full Metal Jacket - 'My rifle is my only friend....' Apocalypse Now - COOL Saving Private Ryan - Cinematic brilliance, but not the best We Were Soldiers - Another moving film TORA TORA TORA - There, I said it The Longest Day - Best WW2 film ever Enemy At The Gates - Nah, just kidding, that was crap :D Casulties of War - Surprising for Micheal J Fox The Deer Hunter - Nuff said Aliens - Basically a 'Nam film Starship Troopers - Had to say it really Black hawk Down - Pretty pants but the guy who kept getting near-misses with the RPG's was hilarious A Bridge Too Far - Good in its day Band of Brothers - I know its not a film Medal of Honour: Allied Assault - What, thats not a film. Could of fooled me Too many to list really. I might add more at a later date. I AM A WAR FILM ADDICT Brolly 08-08-02, 06:38 PM told you kupo Thor 08-08-02, 06:47 PM I thought I'd never say this, but :( Brolly was right Chagur 08-08-02, 11:17 PM What happened to 'Catch 22'? Take care ;) imagepro 08-09-02, 01:15 PM I haven't seen some of the movies posted. Will have to check them out. Thanks to all for NOT including any Rambo flicks. Here are some more favorites: Best Years of Our Lives Bridge on the River Kwai Dirty Dozen The Great Escape Guadalcanal Diary Lifeboat Stalag 17 The Story of G.I. Joe M*A*S*H Green Berets Jacobs Ladder (Ok so it's technically a horror flick, but is a result of Viet Nam) Uncommon Valor Dr.Strangelove: or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb Red Dawn Thor 08-09-02, 04:42 PM Red Dawn, forgot that one. That was cool. Didn't it have Charlie Sheen and Patrick Swazye in it? I was going to say Rambo: First Blood 2. Thats the best one I think, but the whole series is pretty lame imagepro 08-09-02, 05:37 PM Yup Sheen and Swayze. Swayze's only movie worth a damn. Forgot one, even thouh it isn't really war, but still has soldiers. Predator Thor 08-09-02, 06:07 PM Didn't like Predator. Liked the idea, but it was poorly executed I think Aliens is a great war film. Its just a 'Nam film in thoery. Red Dawn is Swazyes only good film. Sheen has some good movies under his belt. His best being Platoon...WHOHA. Liked Hot Shots and Part Deux so I'll add those to war films. I also didn't mind Heartbreak Ridge Thor 08-09-02, 06:53 PM Forgot Star Wars Mr. G 08-09-02, 07:21 PM These flicks come to mind: Zulu Lawrence of Arabia Casablanca Spartacus Ben-Hur The Longest Day Sink the Bismark Das Boot Patton The Great Escape Twelve O'Clock High Run Silent, Run Deep Where Eagles Dare Kelly's Heroes Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb Fail-Safe The Bedford Incident On the Beach Apocalypse Now Platoon Full Metal Jacket Go Tell the Spartans postoak 08-09-02, 08:34 PM Mr G. - I've heard that Das Boot is really, really good but I never can seem to find it to rent. BTW, your idea of what constitutes a war movie is pretty loose -- Casa Blanca !?! :) Thor - since you are a student of the genre -- please check out Battle Cry -- (preferably with a GF, since it is half soap-opera) -- the first half of the movie, where the young men are going through basic training, sets the standard by which all other movies of that sort must be judged. Thor 08-09-02, 08:41 PM Cool, thanks for the tip. I'll look in my second hand video store tomorrow for them. Who said Casablanca. Thats terrible Mr. G 08-10-02, 12:00 AM Casablanca=Chess=war QED: quod erat demonstrandum: QP2-QP4 A4Ever 08-10-02, 01:10 PM Saving Private Ryan Platoon Full metal jacket Thor 08-10-02, 01:25 PM Yay, someone else said Platoon.
