Huh never seen these movies.

Even though its really not about war per se...my fave is probably Apocolypse Now. Patton is also great. The 1st half of full metal jacket is classic. I thought Saving Private Ryan was good. I dunno if there is an all-time best.

Yeah, that's my favourite one as well. :)

Another that I liked, but doesn't count as "war epic" would be Three Kings. I found it very meaningful, despite the *ahem* beginning. :D

Gotta give my nod to Full Metal Jacket.

It is a classic. It is so powerful and moving. Its also very metaphoric. The contrast in characters is great.

Thor - since you are a student of the genre -- please check out Battle Cry -- (preferably with a GF, since it is half soap-opera) -- the first half of the movie, where the young men are going through basic training, sets the standard by which all other movies of that sort must be judged.
