According to a post at Slashdot (News for Nerds) this is not transparent aluminum but transparent Alumina, which is aluminum oxide - Al2-O3Aluminum Oxide is a ceramic, which is why it makes more sense for a company specializing in ceramics to have developed a transparent version of it. Not that this makes it any less impressive, because they've apparently managed to not only make it transparent, but seriously overcome the hardness.

Some oxides are transparent - like cubic zirconia, titanium oxide, Lead oxide (I think...) and even Hydrogen oxide...:D
