Today brings with it some potentially ugly news for Yahoo and Microsoft. America Online has secured a patent for Internet instant messaging services. Filed in September of this year, the patent grants broad ownership rights to the technology, which is used by millions of people to chat quickly and cheaply across the Internet.” (Full text here (http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/business/columnists/gmsv/4775050.htm))AOL responds, “We are Borg. Resistance is futile.”

:m: Peace.

It wont mean anything for us unless micro$oft and yahoo refuse to pay aol.
Its funny how ICQ wasnt mentioned. Maybe works in a different way.

I use Trillian? will 3rd party messager program survive this?!? Aaaaah oh god the @#$%@#$@!

Captain_Crunch

I wouldnt think so, trillian is basically all the messenging clients combined. It isnt a seperate messenging client so i wouldnt think they will need to pay any tariffs that aol set.

Oh yeh, its common knowledge that AOL have tryed to render trillian useless in the past. Trillian always gets adapted to work again. Funny really.

A senior source in the Israeli software sector estimated that AOL will avoid filing law suits against its two largest competitors - Microsoft with its MSN Messenger and Yahoo! which develops Yahoo Messenger. "AOL knows such a move would engender a harsh reaction from Internet users, who would see it as an attempt to take over the Internet. For that reason, it is likely that AOL will use the patents as a strategic weapon at least at this stage."

Download the newest version.
It uses a paltry 4 mb on mine and I run AOL, MSN YM and ICQ on it.
Whereas JUST YM uses about 15 mb.
