Age of Empires II Help

I cannot get AGE of Empires II to work on my PC, it loads and then when the screen flashes to change resolution, it blanks out and the whole PC locks up requiring a reboot, the reset button, no ctrl-alt-del.

I bought the newest version which says on the box is compatible with Win2k, what I use. The machine is plenty capable, the video card is a Geforce 4 FX5200, 128 MB.

If anyone could provide some help, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
