Sobering images out of Russia, Aerflot the once proud Soviet airline turned Russian is now shedding it's Russian look going for a extensive western one. In 1991 Aeroflot was all Soviet, Il-86, Il-62M, Tu-135,154, Il-96 (not sure) but never the less Soviet built. Now her fleet is being transformed into a western one not unlike other generic European carriers. Now her fleet still includes the Il-86 (soon to be withdrawn) , Tu-134, 154, and Il-96, but new western additions have been added:

Her western type as with many former soviet states was the A-310: http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=421822&WxsIERv=QWlyYnVzIEEzMTAtMzA4L0VU&WdsYXMg=QWVyb2Zsb3Q%3D&QtODMg=RHVzc2VsZG9yZiAtIEludGVybmF0aW9uYWwgKFJoZWl uLVJ1aHIgLyBMb2hhdXNlbikgKERVUyAvIEVEREwp&ERDLTkt=R2VybWFueQ%3D%3D&ktODMp=U2VwdGVtYmVyIDEzLCAyMDAz&BP=0&WNEb25u=TWljaGFlbCBOaWtlbA%3D%3D&xsIERvdWdsY=Ri1PR1FU&MgTUQtODMgKE=&YXMgTUQtODMgKERD=MTA5&NEb25uZWxs=MjAwMy0wOS0xMw%3D%3D&static=yes

Then to add insult to injury....

I'm not an expert at this, but I woyuld have thought it was due to the USSR's economic collapse etc, such tha they cant actually build the aircraft anymore, and its better for PR purposes if your planes dont fall apart in the air. Besides, I thought their rip off of Concord was pants anyway.

Well at least u admit you know nothing, I mean that post shows it. But seriously the Russian aircraft industry does have new designs, that are not being exploited. Like for instance the:

Il-96M/400 (http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=410033&WxsIERv=SWx5dXNoaW4gSWwtOTYtNDAw&WdsYXMg=VW50aXRsZWQ%3D&QtODMg=TW9zY293IC0gWmh1a292c2t5IChSYW1lbnNrb3llKSA oVVVCVyk%3D&ERDLTkt=UnVzc2lh&ktODMp=QXVndXN0IDIyLCAyMDAz&BP=0&WNEb25u=U2VyZ2V5IFJpYWJzZXY%3D&xsIERvdWdsY=&MgTUQtODMgKE=&YXMgTUQtODMgKERD=ODY3&NEb25uZWxs=MjAwMy0wOC0yNg%3D%3D&static=yes)

Most are fitted with western electronics, and some even give the option of western engines. So I see no reason why not support the native industry with needs all the help it can get.

I thought their rip off of Concord was pants anyway.

HEY! It may have been a commercial failure but I love the plane:

Your the one talking about some random airliner and how they are *GASP* buying new planes. And I'm the ignorant one? What the hell made you think that anyone would even remotely care? Oh wait, it's because they aren't buying planes from Russia. Jesus, I don't think I could come up with something I care less about. Wait, whats this? An article about a guy stepping on an ant hill in Cameroon! Wow!

(By the way, I'm not "proving myself wrong" by replying to this. I said "no one cares" in regards to your idiotic subject, not your post. I actually find your post quite interesting in it's pointlessness.)

Why not modernize as most of the rest of the world has already.

I would not want to fly on Soviet era aircraft. Quality was not exactly a priority. I question the reliablity of their commercial airliners. You ever ridden in a Skoda? Yeah it's Czech, but same idea.

I would not want to fly on Soviet era aircraft.
I did, twice. A Tu134 if i'm not mistaken. Except from hearing the engine more distinctively, I have no complaints about them.

Quality was not exactly a priority
Sure it was and still is. Especially with the international branche of Areoflot. They wouldn't be allowed to land on or take off from Western airports if their safety and maintenance records are not of high standards. You wouldn't catch me on a domestic flight though.

You ever ridden in a Skoda? Yeah it's Czech, but same idea.
No, it is not. You can not compare the Russian plane industry with the Czech car industry. You'd have to take into consideration that the Soviet Union took enormous pride and effort in competing with the West when it comes to the capabilities of their aircrafts.

Ericfost,

What the hell made you think that anyone would even remotely care?

Well, as for one, i do care. At this rate we would be left with just a very small amount of airliner constructors. From the perspective of a healthy and constructive competition in that industry, i think this is a negative development.

Too bad Truth they are fitted with western tech, and engines. Soviet era aircraft have a bad record not because the actual aircraft themselves are bad, but the mainteniance. Which could make the western craft bad as well, mostly human error. I mean a modern Russian airliner for example the Il-96-300, or the Tu-204 I have not heard of one accident from either. But I have the B-747-400, and the B-757.

Why not modernize as most of the rest of the world has already.

Why not modernize with Russian aircraft? They are great aircraft, I highly doubt anyone of you are making informed decisions.
