Few questions..

And so it begins.:D

Do you think India is a good place to live ?

India is a great place to live.

Are you competitive ?

Not really, just argumentative. I make a great sounding board and I frequently use myself as such to clarify my opinions.
I rarely feel a sense of ownership, about people or ideas, more a curiosity in what it is and whether my instincts were right.

What language do you think or talk to yourself in ?

Someone asked me this just last week and I said Urdu.

Then I realised, I don't actually hear myself think. I don't "see" or "hear" words, its more like a fluid conceptual churning. I just "know" what it is I am thinking.

16 hour flight? That would depend on my mood, but I'd want someone who

-did not hog the seat
-did not come on to me
-did not talk all the time
-did not read over my shoulder
-allowed me the armrest
-is good humored
-does not wake me up

the best companion I had was on a Mumbai-Frankfurt flight. An Indian guy going home to Germany. He is the ruler by which I have measured all future flight companions.

And tell us of this obsession Draq has for you....

Its not an obsession, just loneliness.

I don't always agree with your positions that you take but respect your stand fastness about subejcts.

Doesn't that also prevent you from ever changing your mind about anything that could change in the future?

Does only seeing things the way you want to see them make them right?

Someone who was fun without being a pain in the butt. redarmy11

As to who I would not sit next to, it would have to be shorty_37.

That would be a nightmare, I think.

I am slow to make up my mind about anything or anyone, and slow to change it. You'd have to convince me either way.

Hi, Sam :)

Hi!:D

Have you ever met Shah Rukh Khan in person?

Yup, it was most unexpected, he was a guest at a wedding I attended.

What is the best moment of your life?

Making peace with myself

What is the worst moment of your life?

The phone call about my mom's death.

Who is the most important person in your life?

Me

Who influence you the most (e.g. in point of view, career choices, etc, if any)?

My mother

What is your favorite flower?

Don't have one. But I like flowers that are "happy" like daisies or fragrant, like tuberoses.

Have you ever been in love?

Very much

What do you like the best about him?

His smile.

Thank you, Sam

You're welcome.:)

How was it? I am sure he has a lot of bodyguards, anyway, did you have any
chance to talk to him? Was he as lovely as in the movie?

What is the worst moment of your life?

I am sorry :(

Have you ever been in love?

Ow Sam, that doesnt reveal much :poke:

Anyway, some more questions for you:

Do you have any 'unforgettable thread' here in sciforums?
What is the most difficult argumentation have you ever experiencing here? (about what topic)
Do you have any news reading routine? (like reading newspaper or magazine?)
If yes, what is it that you read?
What is your typical breakfast?
What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?
I think once you said you life in Middle East (Saudi Arabia?) for few years. For what purpose?
Strangest thing happened there?

Thx for taking time to answer.

Awwww..... :bawl: ----> jealous...!!!
How was it? I am sure he has a lot of bodyguards, anyway, did you have any
chance to talk to him? Was he as lovely as in the movie?

It was, as I said, unexpected. We attended the wedding of a relative, who also produces films so we were expecting to see movie stars. I was drooling over the gorgeous Jackie Shroff, when I suddenly saw this HUGE group of people running towards me. Famous as I am in the family, I am not that famous , so I looked left and right to see what the fuss was about. Imagine my SHOCK when I saw I was rubbing shoulders with the oh so ummm short? Shahrukh Khan!

He looked terribly beseiged poor chap, so I abstained from grabbing his collar and planting him one. But yes, he does look as delicious, though considerably more harassed. Must say, he must have tons of patience. And no, there were no bodyguards.

I am sorry

Me too.

Ow Sam, that doesnt reveal much

It was a long time ago. I was a different person then.

Do you have any 'unforgettable thread' here in sciforums?

Hmm thats tough. It would have to be the one where I made friends with most of the people here. And the one where sock drew my famous cartoon. But I've met a lot of really good people here, with the kind of thinking that gets me going, so its hard to choose.

What is the most difficult argumentation have you ever experiencing here? (about what topic)

Physics. Just cannot wrap my head around some of the stuff.

Do you have any news reading routine? (like reading newspaper or magazine?)

No routine, its my habit to read a newspaper every morning with my tea. I listen to the news channels on the radio more often than I listen to music. I read any news, regardless of source, to absorb as many points of view.

If yes, what is it that you read?

The local paper, an Indian newspaper, the BBC website. I like reading Outlook, India Today; infrequently I pick up the Herald, the NY Times, the Economist.

What is your typical breakfast?

A glass or a cup of milk, tea or coffee, something hot or cold.

What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?

I'd have to say Saudi Arabia

I think once you said you life in Middle East (Saudi Arabia?) for few years. For what purpose?

Work

Strangest thing happened there?

An ambulance came with the bodies (and heads) of some drug traffickers, one head fell down and rolled off.

Thx for taking time to answer.

No problem.

In a closet.

what is your favorite flower?

Oh well if you insist, it would have to be tuberoses.

What musical instruments do you play?

The triangle.

What is the worst tasting food you have ever eaten?

A poached fish at a Dutch embassy dinner. It was the first time I tasted fish without any spice. Fortunately they also had these little spicy meatballs so I could rescue my palate.

Where is the worst place you have ever had to sleep?

At a Greyhound bus station in Chicago.

What was the name of the guy you first had sex with?

Sorry, no, but I am from Mumbai and film stars are a dime a dozen; we're rather blase about them. :p

I did act in plays in school and adpated one for a performance in college, but thats the limit of my experience. I don't have the discipline for theatre, but I love it. I see as many plays, concerts, shows as I can fit into my schedule or afford.

Yes, also Christians and probably Parsis and Jews. Its called money.

If you could be the president, what would you do about it (the caste system)?
Education. The varana system was never supposed to be hierarchial, only a system of social organisation.

S.A.M, how can you accept something with no scientific proof?

Because scientific proof has its limits. I never confuse the application of the scientific method with the search for truth.

and if you were picking pellets of a flower and one by one the pellets fell until the last pellet left, meant that you were not going to reach your destiny...what would you do/think than?
I guess I'd pine away disconsolately, or some such.

Spudster:
Hi SAM,
Is there any world cuisine on a par with Indian, if not which goes closest?

What is your favourite dish/es?

I'm crazy about Malaysian and Japanese cuisine. Also love Korean food (bulgogi, gim bop, uhhhh)

Favorite is bony fish in coconut sauce with red chillies with pan fried Bombay duck.

Also Japanese sushi.

Kadark:

The repercussions are up in the air. I'd suggest the iron-fist approach: kill, and ask questions later. ;)

That would be a pretty pointless approach to changing the world.

Who is the greatest warrior in history? Hint: His name starts with an "H".
Mine is Chengez Khan. I don't know yours.

If you could travel back in time and visit one event in history, which event would it be?
The splitting of the moon.

What person (past or present) exemplifies best your outlooks on the world?
Khadija, she was a gutsy woman who knew what she wanted and staked her life on it.

Are you a TNT?

No a TMT. Too Much Trouble. :D

Kadark

Do you believe that peacemaking ultimately results in stability and peace, or that some forces only respond to war?

Mine is Chengez Khan. I don't know yours.

No, I mean as an individual fighter. Genghis was a brilliant commander, but who's to say he could actually throw himself into a pile of enemies and come out victorious? Mine would be Hamzah. To be named the "Lion of Allah" by companions and enemies alike is no small accomplishment.

allright than...S.A.M. one day you decide to go outside during a warm summer night and look up to the stars, when you suddenly notice that there are so many stars out there...but also there are many shooting stars there as well. That knowing science does not preclude cluelessness in people.

Urdu speaker in India...
Is your family of the Nawab class?
Was your family affected by Partition? If so, how does that manifest today, if at all.
Do you think that modern India is becoming more secular?

My great- grandmother was in Pakistan (she was Afghani) and lost her home and all her possessions; she was lost during the riots and we found her only after 40 years, when she was close to 90 and working as a housekeeper in a family. Since she was from a very rich family, it was a difficult 40 years for her. My fathers family was divided between Karachi and Mumbai. So yes, we were affected by the partition. Everyone in India was, to some extent.

How it manifests today is hard to say. I personally had a protected childhood, since my parents went through a lot of hardship to make sure we were safe and well cared for. However, we did witness their troubles and heard their stories, so it was and is a part of our psyche. I would say that my own contribution to the mess is to work to ensure it is not repeated.

I think modern India can go anywhere right now. Its becoming harder to be a Muslim in India, not only because of the rampant Islamophobia we are bombarded with everyday from the west, but also because it is a society in transition. All we can do is make sure that we do all we can to protect the secular fabric of the country.

I could have 100 things around me that I could do (laundry, yardwork, etc.) but if it doesn't pique my interest at the time, there might as well be nothing for me to do.

I can see your point there, but if you're in an area where you could be shot dead at any minute, it's difficult not to be trigger happy.
And if you're being shot at, especially if you're behind cover, running into the street shrieking is about the last thing on your mind. :D

Sam, if you were born in the west, would you be a Muslim nonetheless?

S.A.M.

S.A.M does homicidal make you bored?
S.A.M if others were homicidal, would you be bored?
S.A.M. if bored makes others homicidal, would you be homicidal or be bored?

S.A.M. do you realize that I am asking these question because I am bored and not because I am in love with you, since we both know that one cannot be in love with someone they do not know...correct?
Now that you realized that I am bored, does that make me just as probable to be as homicidal as you are?
If I am homicidal when I am bored...does that mean we share a common trait...and now we both know each other much closer?

Take a cold shower, draq.

What do you do to pass the time?
I'm a voracious reader, I walk, do all the bus routes, potter around in used book stores, go for impulse road trips, try out new places to eat (sometimes in a different city), visit my family and friends (in different cities, countries and even continents).

Sometimes I pick a topic and learn everything I can about it. I have a tendency to OCD, but my impulse control is getting better with age.

I could have 100 things around me that I could do (laundry, yardwork, etc.) but if it doesn't pique my interest at the time, there might as well be nothing for me to do.
Yup, thats me alright. Its a major problem. Fortunately I live alone.

I can see your point there, but if you're in an area where you could be shot dead at any minute, it's difficult not to be trigger happy.
And if you're being shot at, especially if you're behind cover, running into the street shrieking is about the last thing on your mind. :D

There's only two times I ever had to face a situation where I could have been shot. Once during the Bombay riots and once in a hospital. Both times I was very glad not to have a trigger happy person around me, it would have significantly increased my chances of getting shot.

Sam, if you were born in the west, would you be a Muslim nonetheless?

Hard to say. I would have liked to be a native American though.

What military is that? The U.S. military's squads have 13 members composed of three fireteams of 4 soldiers/Marines and a squad leader.

he's in North Europe...'emember

Actually, I was talking about the US army.. ;)
I got it from Wikipedia though:
In the United States Army, a squad is composed of two fireteams of four or five soldiers each, as well as a squad leader who is a Staff Sergeant. In the United States Marine Corps, a squad is typically composed of three fireteams of four Marines and a squad leader who is a junior NCO.

Do you like masala chai?

Its good stuff for winter blues (especially when you're turning blue from cold)

Stuff:

4 cups water
3 - 4 tsp tea leaves (I use Red Label)
1 chunk dried ginger
3 - 4 crushed cardamom pods
3 whole cloves
1 piece cinnamon
1 - 2 whole black peppers
sugar
milk

1. Bring the water to the boil. Add all the ingredients (except milk and sugar) and boil again for about 15 seconds. Let stand for one minute.

2. Warm milk in a pot. Filter the above tea into cups. Add milk and sugar and serve.

Statutory warning: spicy!

Another variation is to use only crushed fresh ginger (half an inch for two cups) and crush one cardamom pod. Its the lite version. :)

Here is anothe one of my favorites, its the spicy alternative to lassi, known as chaas and is a common accompaniment with meals in my fathers community.

Stuff:

2 cups fresh curds
1 teaspoon cumin seed powder (jeera)
1/2 teaspoon green chilli-ginger paste
1/2 teaspoon black salt (sanchal)
salt to taste

For the tempering
1 teaspoon oil
1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
a pinch asafoetida (hing)
For the garnish
chopped coriander

1. Add curds (plain unsweetend yoghurt) to two glasses of ice water and blend with the jeera, chili paste and salt (if the curds are thick add more water, it should be a little watery).

2. Heat oil, add the hing, when it browns (if oil is hot it should brown immediately) add mustard seeds (and curry leaves, if you can find them, I also add one dried red chili for the uber fragrance, but if you have a fear of chillies, you can skip it; similarly you can substitute the ginger-chili paste with black pepper powder). Add to the blended (and hopefully frothy) chaas mixture. Serve cold.

Here is a video, which is almost the same as my recipe

What do you think are the best things about America?
-The land, there is so much variety and open spaces.
-resilience: people get over anything, broken homes, broken marriages, wars.
-the amount of investment in education and research, though this is falling now.
-the casual attitude to life, they don't take themselves or anyone else seriously

What has America done throughout its history that you think was good and/or important?
open its doors to anyone with merit.

Who do you think was the best American President, and why?
Don't really know anyone that well, but I'd say based on the little I know, it would be FDR on his good days. Mostly because he was smart enough to marry Eleanor, but also because he did the most to bring into the US those qualities for which it is most admired; his role in providing a sound economy after the great depression, in improving the role of blacks and women in mainstream society, etc.

However, he also pulled the US into the second world war, bombed the Japanese and initiated the cold war, so his legacy ultimately was to create many of the problems that persist today.

What is your favorite book? Favorite author?

Favorite philosopher?
That would have to be Mirza Ghalib (aka Assadullah Khan) and Marcus Aurelius

Favorite quotation?
I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.
-- Mark Twain

Swatah melya shivay swarag disat nahi- Marathi proverb
(To see heaven, you must be prepared to die, yourself)

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” - Robert A. Heinlein

Greatest unfulfilled dream you still hope to achieve?
Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikel
Bahit nikle mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle

...thousands of desires, each worth dying for...
many of them I have realized...yet I yearn for more...;)

Sorry. I didn't notice the thread. I didn't want to miss the chance to find out if you had anything nice to say about the US.

I like Marcus Aurelius, but I've never heard of Mizra Ghalib. I googled him, and came across a quote about how the drop of rain is happy in the river. I also found:

which wasn't all that helpful.

Good quotes. I especially liked the Heinlein. Have you read any of his novels?

You've already asked, once before ;)

Mirza Assadullah Khan "Ghalib" (Ghalib being his takhallus or nom de plume) is one of the best philosopher poets of all time. He wrote mainly in Urdu, but also in Persian and his poetry is difficult, unique and tantalising, because every time you read it, you realise there is yet another way to interpret his words.

http://www.loveurdu.com/urdu-poetry/ghalib/images/shairy/ghalib1d.gif

Thats the first shair in his Diwan-e-Ghalib, or anthology.

It is written in his typical dual style and could be a ghazal on the listlessness of God or his tormented love.
I fear my translations may not do him justice.:)
As a ghazal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghazal) usually is, it a series of couplets (ashar) around a theme.

naqsh fariyaadii hai kis kii shoKhii-e-tahariir kaa
kaaGazii hai pairahan har paikar-e-tasviir kaa

Against whose playful writing do the words plead
Papery is the countenance of every image

kaave-kaave saKht_jaanii haaye tanhaaii na puuchh
subah karanaa shaam kaa laanaa hai juu-e-shiir kaa

Ask not of my tolerance to the incessant solitude
Turning night into day is like unearthing a canal of milk
(referring to the tale of Shirin-Farhad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chosroes_and_Shirin))

jazbaa-e-be_iKhtiyaar-e-shauq dekhaa chaahiye
siinaa-e-shamshiir se baahar hai dam shamshiir kaa

You must see how uncontrollable is my desire
That causes my sword to unfurl from its sheath

aagahii daam-e-shuniidan jis qadar chaahe bichhaaye
muddaa anqaa hai apane aalam-e-taqariir kaa

No matter how widespread is the net of awareness
Mythical is the meaning of my style of expression

bas ke huu.N 'Ghalib' asiirii me.n bhii aatish zar-e-pa
muu-e-aatish_diidaa hai halqaa merii za.njiir kaa

Even bound, my feet are on fire, Ghalib
For the chains that bind me are but curls of singed hair.

Good quotes. I especially liked the Heinlein. Have you read any of his novels?

Not yet, any suggestions?
