Here is the best place for you: About the Member Round x!
Every week we'll choose one member to be questioned, and he/she will got
the attention all for him/herself in the thread!
For the 3rd round, you can ask ANYTHING about BentheMan! http://www.sciforums.com/avatars/avatar26229_1.gif And BentheMan
has to answer anything HONESTLY. However, he is free not to answer question related to personal data like address, phone number, etc, lol.
After a week or so, BentheMan will choose next member and create About the Member Round 4: [insert name]. And so on...

to be noticed by Ben :p
Hello Ben, my questions are:
Since when you started to like physics & math?
What other topics you like beside physics & math?
Where do you think you are best at, physics or math?
I read somewhere back then, you publish some scientific journal or paper (?), how many and where?
How old are you?
Who do you think is the best poster in physics & math subforum? pls name 3 of them and explain why.
Thanks.
Are you really 'The man' ? ;)
Are you waiting for more questions ? :p
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 12:56 PM Have you ever worn a Speedo?
God no.
Where is the oddest place you have ever had sex?
Hmmm. Bathroom at a party?
Where did you get the shark tooth necklace?
Ahh. My mom found this shark's tooth on the beach when she first moved to Galveston (Texas) with my dad. He wore it around his neck for about 20 years, and now it is mine :)
Have you ever had a manicure or a pedicure?
I have pedicures occasionally. Untill I lost my big toenail about six months ago...I'm waiting for it to grow back.
What was the name of your favorite pet?
My dog, Lefty. He's laying in the sun looking at me right now.
Picture (http://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~dundee/lefty.jpg).
Why do you have the avatar you do?
A pothead dishtowel? Why would anyone NOT have that as an avatar?
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 12:57 PM 1. Do you have any weed I can borrow?
No... ask my dad.
2. Are you some sorta cowboy?
Of sorts, I guess. I'm more of a redneck...a walking Jeff Foxworthy joke.
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 01:16 PM - Do you like being picked ?
Actually I was quite flattered. I never imagined that I was popular enough:)
- Do you have some sort of math degree ?
Some sort:) I have a B.S. in Chemistry, a M.S. in Physics, and am working towards the PhD (Physics, 2008ish?) at Ohio State University in Columbus.
- What temperature is it outside ?
Riht now it is partly cloudy, wind out of the ENE, about 50 F. The Gulf (of Mexico) is a bit rough but mostly laid down.
- Did you have a nice Christmas ?
It was pretty good. I got to spend four days or so in South Texas deer hunting and drinking beer with my dad. My girlfriend drove down from Houston to see me last night, and I have been working on a talk that I have to give on Jan 26 for the grad students at OSU.
- Do you look forward to New Year's Eve ?
Absolutely. Drinking beer, playing guitar, and blowing shit up... Aside from deriving something, I don't know what could be better.
- What song(s) can get you 'down' ?
Hmmm. I have a very...eclectic taste in music. If I really want to get down, some Stevie Ray Vaughan or 13th Floor Elevators normally does the trick.
- How tall are you ?
Six feet and some change.
- Blonds, brunettes or red heads ?
Actually, I really dig girls with dark skin and black hair, like Mexican/Central American, Phillipinos/Pacific Islanders. But having to choose one of the three, I gotta go with brunettes. Of course, the irony is, my girlfriend is about as white as they come (Swedish descent), with blonde hair.
- Boobs or butts ?
Hmmm. As far as boobs are concerned, anything more than a handful is being greedy. Give me legs and asses:)
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 01:32 PM Since when you started to like physics & math?
Well, I have kind of a long history. I started out in chemistry, with plans to get a MS in Chemical Engineering. Then I decided I hated engineering, and had aspirations to go to grad school for chemistry. Then I decided I hated Chemistry, but by this point it was too late---I was going to a private school (~$20000 a year) and couldn't afford to change my major. Luckily, I had enough classes to qualify for minors in math and physics. I kind of took a long shot going to grad school for physics, but it worked out. So, I have ALWAYS been interested in math and physics, but I have been studying these things exclusively for about 6 years.
What other topics you like beside physics & math?
Outside of the sciences, I like Politics and World Events. I rarely post in these forums, though, because (as Richard Feynman put it) ``A physicist talking about stuff that isn't physics is just as dumb as the next guy.'' Nonetheless, you will find me putting my foot in my mouth more often than not.
Where do you think you are best at, physics or math?
I'm actually pretty poor at math because I haven't studied that much of it. Because my undergraduate degree isn't in physics, I have kind of shaky foundations in stuff that I should know. Ex: There is a thread in physics and math where some guy asked about relativistic forces and I gave a COMPLETELY wrong answer. But there are some things which I know very well---quantum field theory, particle physics, etc.
I read somewhere back then, you publish some scientific journal or paper (?), how many and where?
In physics I have four publications (http://www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/find/hep/www?rawcmd=find+a+dundee&FORMAT=WWW&SEQUENCE=) that nobody reads (note that there are very few citations!). In Chemistry I have two publications:
http://www.techexpo.com/toc/spctrs01.html#apr
http://as.osa.org/abstract.cfm?id=122284
How old are you?
28.
Who do you think is the best poster in physics & math subforum? pls name 3 of them and explain why.
Hmm. Actually I'm going to plead the fifth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleading_the_Fifth). Suffice it to say that there are several posters in that forum who I admire, and a few who I do not.
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 01:38 PM Are you self-absorbed? self-centered? narcissistic? attention seeker? ego maniac? Constipated?
Hmmm. Are these things that anyone would admit to:) I am none of the above, actually. I
-am Loud when I'm drunk,
-am giggly when I'm stoned,
-am sometimes on key when I sing and play guitar,
-love fine coffee, single malt bourbon, dark beer and good tobacco,
-can be the life of the party, if it's the right party,
-love to fish, hunt, and cook,
-have been to most of the countries in western Europe,
-listen to the BBC daily,
-voted for Bush twice.
inzomnia 12-29-07, 01:55 PM Wow, Ben.. this is really impressive.... I got the impression you are intellect,
humble, and could be fun at the same time :)

Ben is your real name :bugeye: I clicked those links (cool!) but I don't have a single clue
even what's the titles mean. I rarely visit physics & math subforum for this reason. Though I hope in the future we can get to know more many of them.
Somebody rings the bell, thanks for taking tmie, come up with more questions later/tmrow

BenTheMan 12-29-07, 04:00 PM Have you ever fucked a sheep as long as you wanted to?
They kick too much. I prefer democrats.

BenTheMan 12-29-07, 05:03 PM If you had a choice of saving your wife or your son which one would you save?
Well, I've neither, but I think I would choose my son. I would hope that my wife would want the same.

What US State have you never been to that you would like to?
Can you fillet a fish?
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 05:44 PM Have you ever kissed a non-relative male?
Yes, for a bottle of scotch. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
What movie has made you cry?
Hmmm. Dead Poet's Society. Cool Hand Luke. Black Hawk Down. The Alamo. I'm pretty emotional, actually.
Have you ever had your mouth washed out with soap?
No, but it was doused with Tobasco sause once. Now I can't get enough of the stuff.
What US State have you never been to that you would like to?
Alaska---elk, moose, salmon, halibut...sounds like my kind of place :)
Can you fillet a fish?
I can filet them, I can steak them, I can skin them and debone them. I know where all the good parts are that you normally throw away---the cheeks on kingfish, throats on red snapper, the tuna belly (Japanese call it toro).
Orleander 12-29-07, 05:58 PM How do you peel a catfish?
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 06:00 PM How do you peel a catfish?
Cut the skin just behind it's head with a sharp knife, just enough to get a tag of skin. Then (I use two pairs of pliers), grab the jaw with one hand (or hang it from a nail) and pull. It should all come off, just like a deer.
1a. Is there such a thing as the thrill of the hunt ?

LMAO!!!
here we go again!!! :D
I can't help it.. someone cure me.. :bawl:
;)
Edit: Never bring up hunting in my presence lol
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 06:29 PM 1a. Is there such a thing as the thrill of the hunt ?
I'm generally too drunk to be able to tell.
1b. Can you explain it to me (open question )
For me, hunting is more like grocery shopping. I make no appologies that it is not really a sport in most cases---you put out food, animals come, you pick one out that looks fat and you kill it. If you want to trophy hunt (i.e. shoot something to hang on the wall), there's some more skill involved. The bigger animals are smarter, and are more elusive.
2. Do you ever feel bad about killing an animal ?
Do you ever feel bad about eating an animal? Ahh right, I'm on the spot. I do feel bad when I don't kill an animal instantly. I don't feel bad about killing it though, and take a certain pride in eating pieces of the animal that I killed and cleaned myself. Kind of the same as eating something that you cooked yourself.
3. Have you ever failed to kill an animal instantly ?
Yes. And it is a bit upsetting.
4. Has a wounded animal ever gotten away ?
I shoot a pretty big caliber (300 Win Mag), so the animals normally don't go far. I go for mostly head and neck shots (``poacher shots'') so I either typically drop the animal (it's dead before it hits the ground) or I miss it completely.
One time I was shooting my dad's gun (not quite as bit a caliber---7mm Mag) and it was really off. I went for a heart shot (first mistake) and ended up shooting a deer about two feet back in the stomach (the gun was REALLY off). I chased the deer through the mesquite trees for about a quarter mile (nearly getting lost), but lost the trail. That was the only one I ever hit and lost.
Edit: Never bring up hunting in my presence lol
Apologies if I offend you, but if ``in your presence'' means ``anywhere on SciForums'', then you probably will be disapointed. In the US, there are as many people who are hunters as there are vegetarians---I am sure that in Europe, where you live, things are quite different (except, possibly, in Finland, where the per capita gun ownership is higher that anywhere else in the world). I usually remind the people that try to tell me how cruel I am that they are really no different from the evangelists who tell me that I am going to hell.
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 06:33 PM If your ringtone is a song, what is it?
Little Fugue (or Fugue in G minor) by Bach. I played in a brass quintet in high school, and we took some top honors at a state competition with it.
Have you ever watched a movie so often that you mouth/say the dialog? If yes, what movie?
Heh, yeah. High Fidelity, Gone in 60 Seconds, Cool Hand Luke, Gross Pointe Blank, and Rounders.
Do you have siblings?
If yes, where are you in the birth order?
I have one younger sister. She is married and has a real life.
Orleander 12-29-07, 06:47 PM what do you think is your best body feature?
Have you ever busted your parents having sex?
Have you ever been a pall bearer?

Have you ever considered how lame it is that the oddest place you have ever had sex is a bathroom?
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 06:55 PM what do you think is your best body feature?
I have a pretty good smile.
Have you ever busted your parents having sex?
I don't think so, but I may have some repressed memories...
Have you ever been a pall bearer?
No, I haven't even been to that many funerals.
Have you ever been in a helicopter?
No.
Have you ever considered how lame it is that the oddest place you have ever had sex is a bathroom?
Well...not until now :) During a party? With people outside? Come on! What would you call ``odd''?
Orleander 12-29-07, 07:00 PM a plane (mile high club), a bus (like Varda), a confessional booth (like shorty), a picnic table at the park, an ambulance...I mean...a bathroom?? People do that all the time at parties or bars. Its kinda a given.
ANYWAYS!!!!
boxers or briefs?
latex or lamb skin?
Coke or Pepsi?
Ever been in a threesome?

Well, apologies. I guess I am not as sexually enlightened as the rest of the SciForums proliteriate :)
boxers or briefs?
latex or lamb skin?
Coke or Pepsi?
Ever been in a threesome?
Bexer biefs (best of both worlds), latex, coke, and is that an offer?
Orleander 12-29-07, 07:59 PM no, I get confused too easily to be with more than 1 at a time.
What the worst beer you have ever tried?
What is your shoe size?
Where do you see yourself in 3 years?
BenTheMan 12-29-07, 08:11 PM no, I get confused too easily to be with more than 1 at a time.
I'm not much of a multitasker either.
What the worst beer you have ever tried?
Amstel Light. I had distinct aftertaste of...hamster.
What is your shoe size?
12 US (46 Europe).
Where do you see yourself in 3 years?
Hmmm. Member of the week again? Hopefully I will be finished with my PhD by then, and will be able to find a job in Houston, Austin or Dallas with an oil company or something (assuming the price of oil is still up). Probably married. Probably hunting in the winter and fishing in the summer, drinking bourbon and smoking my pipe in the evenings :)
superluminal 12-29-07, 08:13 PM ...drinking bourbon and smoking my pipe in the evenings :)
Dying of a combination of liver failure and lung cancer a few years later... Pffftt.

No. I just thought John Kerry was a complete jackass.
inzomnia 12-30-07, 04:47 AM Do you fear nothing for being non-anonymous?
Can you make sushi and sashimi also? I mean from the scratch.
How did you learn cooking?
thx
BenTheMan 12-30-07, 10:11 AM Do you fear nothing for being non-anonymous?
Not really. What should I be scared of? That someone who doesn't like me tracks me down? That seems unlikely. And the people who post here do so from all over the world. The only thing that I do fear is that I say something wrong about physics, and someone who knows me sees it.
Can you make sushi and sashimi also? I mean from the scratch.
No. I usually go out for sushi, but finding really fresh fish is always a problem. I hate old fish.
How did you learn cooking?
Trial and error, mostly. The thing is, people are scared to screw up. People follow recipies by getting out measuring cups and tablespoons and stuff---those are just guidelines, especially when talking about spices and herbs and stuff. Use fresh stuff, and don't be scared to screw up---that's my moto :)
cosmictraveler 12-30-07, 10:12 AM What is the most important thing that you have learned in your life?
BenTheMan 12-30-07, 10:21 AM What is the most important thing that you have learned in your life?
If you don't understand something, or can't do something, you have to work harder.
Orleander 12-30-07, 11:51 AM Is there any kind of animal you wouldn't eat?
Have you been in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans?
Have you ever been through a natural disaster (earthquake, tornado, hurricane)?
What is your favorite Italian Food? Mexican?
Can you dive?
Can you ice skate?
BenTheMan 12-30-07, 02:24 PM Is there any kind of animal you wouldn't eat?
Possums, racoons, coyotes---most small mamals.
Have you been in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans?
I haven't ever been in the Pacific Ocean, but I watched the sun rise over the Atlantic this summer after an all night poker session in Atlantic City.
Have you ever been through a natural disaster (earthquake, tornado, hurricane)?
Texas Coast---I've seen one hurricane (Elisha, cat 3) 1984 or something. I was mostly too young to remember.
What is your favorite Italian Food? Mexican?
I like a good italian sausage. For mexican, I don't know. Probably some sizzling fajitas, or some good, greazy fideo.
Can you dive?
Well, I'm not certified, but I do know how to dive.
Can you ice skate?
The only place I like ice is in my whiskey.
Orleander 12-30-07, 04:29 PM No, not that kind of diving. I meant, face first off a diving board diving. Can you do that?
BenTheMan 12-30-07, 04:32 PM No, not that kind of diving. I meant, face first off a diving board diving. Can you do that?
Oh. No. Well, kind of. Nothing fancy. But if I'm in the water I'd rather be fishing.
Orleander 12-30-07, 06:20 PM Have you ever slapped a woman?
Have you ever been attracted to a relative?
In grade school, did you ever call your teacher Mom?
What was your favorite Halloween costume? How old were you when you wore it?
Where is the strangest place you ever had sex (come on, you've had a day to find somewhere!! ;) )
Orleander 12-30-07, 06:24 PM ...I haven't ever been in the Pacific Ocean, but I watched the sun rise over the Atlantic this summer after an all night poker session in Atlantic City....
Did you go in the Atlantic or did you just look at it??
BenTheMan 12-30-07, 06:57 PM Have you ever slapped a woman?
No, but I came close. There was this absolute whore at a party one night, who tried to sleep with just about every guy there. I was playing guitar and singing, and she thought it would be funny to pour beer on me. Well, I am very protective of my guitar (Kristen), and when she spilled some on it I was PISSED off. My friends had to hold me back and I verbally assaulted her pretty harshly. She broke down crying, and ran out into the street (she was only wearing panties). Then she got back and appologized to me, and then tried to sleep with me. Ahhh women.
Have you ever been attracted to a relative?
No, not really. But I have a cousin who IS very attractive.
In grade school, did you ever call your teacher Mom?
Heh. Yeah.
What was your favorite Halloween costume? How old were you when you wore it?
I dressed as Walter from The Big Lebowski last year. That was pretty awesome.
Where is the strangest place you ever had sex (come on, you've had a day to find somewhere!! )
Sorry. You or Varda or Shorty will have to wait untill my current girlfriend and I break up, then enlighten me ;) (Sorry to disappoint, but this isn't likely.) Like I said, we must've missed the sexual revolution in Texas. In my truck at the beach (under a full moon), the bathroom at a party, and in my sister's bedroom while my parents slept in the next room...all pretty stock, aparently :)
BenTheMan 12-30-07, 06:58 PM Did you go in the Atlantic or did you just look at it??
I took off my shoes and was in to my knees. It's pretty humbling to think that you could start swimming and not stop till you hit England.
Orleander 12-30-07, 07:04 PM ....There was this absolute whore at a party one night, who tried to sleep with just about every guy there. ....and ran out into the street (she was only wearing panties). ...
 she was walking around a drunken party in only panties and STILL couldn't get laid? How bad was she?
BenTheMan 12-30-07, 07:14 PM  she was walking around a drunken party in only panties and STILL couldn't get laid? How bad was she?
She was actually pretty attractive. She did get close a couple of times, but I have a pretty tight group of friends. After she fucked with me she got shut out.
A good friend of mine and I drove her home (she had been left by her friends) and offered us a threesome. We were like ``Nahhhh''.
cosmictraveler 12-30-07, 07:52 PM What is the single most goal of your life?
BenTheMan 12-30-07, 08:07 PM What is the single most goal of your life?
Raise good kids.
original 12-30-07, 11:56 PM - What will you do to raise good kids... what would make them good kids?
- Did you attend a public school, and if so, were you at or near the top of your class?
- In any of Reiku's threads, did you ever work with his equations to see if they didn't equal pseudoscience?
- Any plans for celebrating the first day of 2008?
- If any of the previous questions were asked or answered, how do you feel about people who post without reading through the entire topic?
Glad to see you brought a towel. Take care.
BenTheMan 12-31-07, 12:21 AM - What will you do to raise good kids... what would make them good kids?
I have a pretty inexperienced voice, but I think I will teach my kids to play poker. That way I will know how to tell when they are lying to me :) I will make sure that they have friends who are not the same color as them, I will make sure that they can play some sort of musical instrument, and I will do everything I can to encourage curiousity.
- Did you attend a public school, and if so, were you at or near the top of your class?
I went to public school and I was pretty mediocre as a student. I didn't realize that I was good at math until I took calculus---most math classes I took I made C's or B's in untill my senior year in high school...then it made sense. Untill about midway through my senior year, however, I was absolutely convinced that I was going to be a professional tuba player (no shit). I was one of the best in Texas in high school.
- In any of Reiku's threads, did you ever work with his equations to see if they didn't equal pseudoscience?
Well, let me try to draw a comparisson... Reiku's math was about like Gustav's english. Reiku knew a few key words that made his works sound science-y, but when you broke through the facade to try to probe the actual content of his ideas, you couldn't find any. It's like someone who makes up big words to sound intelligent, and you are fooled until you look for those words in the dictionary and can't find them. Reiku frequently complained to me about nit-picking, which was pretty much anytime I challenged, say, one of his definitions. He expected me to just be wowed into silence by his intelligence, and he could never understand HOW he was wrong.
The absolute biggest problem I had with him, though, was the fact that he didn't really know what he was talking about beyond the catch words. If I would ask questions, eventually it would come to the point where he would say something like ``Well, Stephen Hawking said it so it must be true.'' And I REALLY hate that.
Technically, however, the answer to your question is no, because there were never any equations which actually meant anything.
- Any plans for celebrating the first day of 2008?
Well, a friend of mine is having a party (I haven't seen him sense he got back from Iraq two years ago). So I'll pick up a bottle of whiskey and some champagne and tune up the old guitar. My woman will be there, so that will be nice.
- If any of the previous questions were asked or answered, how do you feel about people who post without reading through the entire topic?
Well, I have to admit that I don't normally read threads that are longer than two pages (unless they're VERY interesting) before I post.
Glad to see you brought a towel. Take care
Heh. I NEVER forget to bring a towel.
MacGyver1968 12-31-07, 05:34 AM You said your mom lived in Texas...Have you ever lived here?
...and why do you live in god forsaken Ohio, where the girls put the "Ug" in ugly?
Where do you get your "Redneck" roots?
Can you or your dad score me an "1/8th" for New Years, if I front you the money?...my guy is out of town.
BenTheMan 12-31-07, 09:43 AM You said your mom lived in Texas...Have you ever lived here?
Absolutely. I was born and raised in Galveston, Texas. My parents both still live there.
...and why do you live in god forsaken Ohio, where the girls put the "Ug" in ugly?
Well, the girls aren't that bad, but they're definitely not the same as the girls back home. I live in Ohio because of grad school...it's only temporary.
Where do you get your "Redneck" roots?
From my dad's side, mainly. I come from a long line of horse thieves, pirates, and card cheats.
Can you or your dad score me an "1/8th" for New Years, if I front you the money?...my guy is out of town.
Planning, my friend.

BenTheMan 01-01-08, 05:01 PM what is your favorite fruit and veggie?
Hmmm banana and spinach.
What is your favorite candy?
Hmmmm twix.
When was the last time you made a snow angel or snowman?
Last February, when my woman was in Columbus.
Have you ever been to a rodeo? Did you enter any of the events?
I generally try to make the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo every year, but I've never entered a rodeo before.
When you were little did you ever take the couch apart and make a fort?
Not really---I used to play with Legos.
Did you ever wear a towel as a cape?
Yeah I think so.
Have you ever written on a bathroom wall?
Heh. Yeah. One time I was in Boulder and someone wrote something disparaging about Texas on the wall. So I pulled out a marker and wrote something witty, I can't remember what it was, though.

BenTheMan 01-01-08, 06:57 PM How do you calm yourself to sleep on restless nights ?
Ummmm how do MOST guys get to sleep on restless nights?
Who (famous person) would you turn gay for ?
Hmmm. Jesus?
I don't know. I don't really think I would turn gay for anyone.

What are the characteristics you find appealing in a woman?
which teletubby is your favorite and why?
BenTheMan 01-02-08, 12:51 PM which teletubby is your favorite and why?
The one with the purse because he pisses Pat Robertson off.
What are the characteristics you find appealing in a woman?
hmmm. I like long hair and freckles, or dark hair and dark skin. And girls who are independant and ticklish. This will undoubtedly get misinterpretted, but I still like some symbolance of traditional gender roles---i.e. she can clean the house and I'll cut the grass. (This is not to say that I expect her to stay home and raise the kids...I would be fine doing THAT, so long as she made enough money.)
And intelligent/like to learn about a bunch of different things. That being said, I could never date a chick who was a physicist of mathematician, because it would drive me nuts. My current girlfriend is in med school, so she can teach me all kinds of things about guts and organs and stuff.
And if she can sing, then that's even better. And she can't be too tight with money, and she has to be ok with a big ass moose/elk/deer head hanging somewhere in the house.
Either way, something in the preceding three paragraphs rules out most of the girls who I have seen posting here :)
Challenger78 01-02-08, 01:16 PM Do you watch any kids shows regularly ?
Do you hate going anywhere ? (dentist etc ?)
BenTheMan 01-02-08, 01:28 PM Do you watch any kids shows regularly ?
No not really. I watch Adult Swim, but there's hardly any kid's shows in their lineup.
Do you hate going anywhere ? (dentist etc ?)
Ummm back to Ohio? :) I wish I could earn my PhD by sitting in coffee shops, deer blinds, and fishing boats in Texas, but (alas) I have to drive back to Columbus.

Ben...
if you were given to study blackholes up close...couple of parsecs away but were told that there is a high chance that you would get pulled into the singularity with it.
Chance of a lifetime...
would you go?

Ben, If you could sell sciforums (despite all evidence that it can't be sold) .. and selling it would make the moderators all biased against free thought...other than their agenda.. would you do it for a million bucks and complete control of the physics forum ?
Would you abandon Sciforums if the physics forum was deleted ?

Well, how could I NOT go?
Truth be told, I do try to stay out of black hole conversations (but am rarely able to) because I always end up being wrong about something.

Ben, If you could sell sciforums (despite all evidence that it can't be sold) .. and selling it would make the moderators all biased against free thought...other than their agenda.. would you do it for a million bucks and complete control of the physics forum ?
Well...I don't deal in hypotheticals too well. Presumably, you are confused about what ``free thought'' actually means to phyiscists, in terms of physics. I think each moderator will give you a different definition of what ``free thought'' means. To me, some ideas are just bad, or are just wrong. I'll give you a prime example.
There used to be a poster here called Uclock. I think his name was Tony. He had developed an entire theory where ``time'' was just a human construction, caused by evolution of physical systems. (Actually, what he proposed was very similar to another poster's theories here: Farsight.) This is also very similar to things that people thought before Einstein arrived in the ninteenth century.
The problem with doing this doesn't take a whole lot of training to spot---it's an idea called Lorentz Invariance which tells us that time and space are (at the end of the day) pretty much the same thing. Now, one would expect that someone who was in favor of abandoning the space-time interpretation of gravity that Einstein invented would at least know what Lorentz Invariance was. But when pressed on such issues, both Farsight and Uclock dismissed these questions as nit-picking. It was quite clear that they didn't know anything about Lorentz Invariance beyond what they could read on Wikipedia. And you can read all of the Wikipedia you want, it will never be a substitute for sitting down with a textbook and a pencil and working out the details for yourself.
I am a HUGE fan of Lorentz Invariance. And besides gauge invariance, it's my second favorite invariance (last but not least is modular invariance). The reason that it's my favorite invariance is that it explains why we only see particles with integer and half integer spins! So, aside from telling us something about space and time, we get bosons and fermions ``for free''. To me, and to every other physicist worth his salt, exchanging the machinery and beauty of Lorentz Invariance for something that doesn't at least explain integer and half integer spins is a bit like trading a cow for ``magic'' beans.
I hate to break anyone's bubble here, but you haven't shown Einstein wrong. You haven't proved that there's an aether, and you haven't disproven dark energy. Sorry. If you have a thought about these things, let's talk about it. Maybe I can show you where it's wrong---in fact, I can probably show you where it's wrong because I have a lot of practice with it...I shoot down my own ideas all the time.
``Free thought'' to me has to be consistent with everything else that has come before it. The stuff is called ``established physics'' because it has been tested, and proven. Because I don't moderate outside of the physics forum (nor would I want to), I can't speak for other moderators.
Would you abandon Sciforums if the physics forum was deleted ?
Probably not, because there are still things which interest me here. But I would probably also spend much less time here.

What would be a good reason to kill a person ?
Orleander 01-02-08, 06:18 PM What sport are you good at?
What does a professional tuba player do for a living?
Have you ever made home-made ice cream?
What's your highest score in Scrabble?
Ever stolen something from a store?
BenTheMan 01-02-08, 06:21 PM Hmmm. I don't know. I could imagine a few good reasons to kill a person, but I will don't know about the minimum offense. I could imagine shooting someone (not necessarily to kill) who broke into my house, especially if it was at night, and especially if they were armed. If I caught someone acosting my wife or childeren.
BenTheMan 01-02-08, 06:25 PM What sport are you good at?
I'm a pretty good baseball player, and I know a bit about football (not soccer).
What does a professional tuba player do for a living?
Teach, and/or play in an orchestra.
Have you ever made home-made ice cream?
No, but I've seen it done.
What's your highest score in Scrabble?
I don't remember, but I usually win. My girlfriend can usually beat me, though. This game (http://www.shockwave.com/gamelanding/chicktionary.jsp) is pretty good practice.
Ever stolen something from a store?
Yes, once. There was an open pack of baseball cards at KMart, and there was a Todd Ziele rookie card sitting on top. He was a top prospect for either the Cincinatti Reds or St. Louis Cardinals. He never amounted to much, but I still kind of feel bad about it.

Do you think the tiger deserved it ?
Did the kid deserve to die? Probably not. Did the tiger deserve to be fucked with? Certainly not. But, I can see the tiger's point of view a lot better than the kid's point of view.
BenTheMan 01-02-08, 06:53 PM If you get married, big wedding or eloping?
I'm a big fan of a Vegas wedding and a big ass party when I get back. Like ``Hey yall come over for barbecue, and we just got married, too.'' But my grandmother would probably be pretty pissed.
If you could bring an animal back from extinction, what would it be?
Wooly mamoth. A big ass harry American elephant with huge ass tusks? Man that would be awesome.
Do you ever believed in the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot?
At one point when I was a kid I did. I was raised Catholic, and there came a point when I said ``Well, there seems to be as much evidence for Bigfoot as there is for God. So I should believe in both.'' The Sunday School teacher called my parents.
(I say this, and I am not an athiest at all. We should avoid this conversation, although inevitably someone will ask about it.)
have you ever talked on the phone while pooping?
Heh. Yeah. I do it to my girlfriend all the time. IF she wants to talk and I gotta take a dump, I don't see why I should have to choose.
BenTheMan, can you calculate (on the go) probability of particular type of scenarios occurring in your life?
BenTheMan 02-23-08, 02:00 AM BenTheMan, can you calculate (on the go) probability of particular type of scenarios occurring in your life?
Actually I'm pretty shitty at calculating exact numbers.
But I can ALWAYS ballpark, and I am quite good at it.

Jozen-Bo 02-28-08, 11:50 AM Hello Bentheman!!!
I am catching up on the About the members threads and want to make sure I ask everyone who is selected my customary 13 Jozen-Bo questions. So...here comes 13 questions:
1. How long have you been the man?
2. If you could turn into Bent He-man, would you?
3. What is your favorite thing about physics?
4. What do you think happens at the end of time?
5. What is you favorite color?
6. Can you moonwalk?
7. If you were god what would you do?
8. What is you favorite smilie?
9. Are you a ninja?
10. Am I a ninja?
11. What is the toughest physics problem ever?
12. What do your think about the Mind Portal?
13. Do you think I am crazy?
Please keep in mind that I am asking about whether or not you think I am crazy and not nuts, as my guess is that you still think I am nuts. It is good to have nuts and better to nut. Oh no...I am starting to digress...sorry!
Anyways I hope you got your Phd and wish you all the success you could ask for before you decompose.
Best Regards,
Jozen-Bo
:)
Jozen-Bo 05-17-08, 04:10 PM Hello BenTheMan! It appears you are around...maybe you'll catch this?
Jozen-Bo 05-17-08, 04:21 PM OK...I'll ask...would you pwease answer the questions?
BenTheMan 05-18-08, 01:45 PM Hi Jozen---
I didn't realize anyone was still interested in me :)
Hello Bentheman!!!
I am catching up on the About the members threads and want to make sure I ask everyone who is selected my customary 13 Jozen-Bo questions. So...here comes 13 questions:
1. How long have you been the man?
Since high school. I registered my copy of ``Sim City 2000'' to ``Ben the Man'', and it stuck.
2. If you could turn into Bent He-man, would you?
Hmmm. Naaa.
3. What is your favorite thing about physics?
The way you struggle and struggle with some problem, and then all of a sudden the answer flashes through your mind, shoots down the nerves of your arm, and scribbles itself on paper. Almost better than sex.
4. What do you think happens at the end of time?
As a scientist? Or as a Christian? The universe will probably die a cold and lonely death. The current age of expansion will continue untill something like a Big Rip.
5. What is you favorite color?
Hmm. Green?
6. Can you moonwalk?
Can I? Or Will I?
7. If you were god what would you do?
Make sure people capitalized my name :)
8. What is you favorite smilie?
I've seen some good ones. The one where the smiley is puking is pretty funny.
9. Are you a ninja?
I have my moments.
10. Am I a ninja?
Hmm. If you were, would you be asking this quesiton?
11. What is the toughest physics problem ever?
Quantizing gravity.
12. What do your think about the Mind Portal?
I can't recall reading it, I'll get back to you.
13. Do you think I am crazy?
I think you are intelligent to ask the sorts of questions that you do about Nature, but I think that you could do with some more education.
Sorry for the delay!
BenTheMan 05-18-08, 01:56 PM Who was the better scientist, Jesus or Mohamed?
At the very least, they were both incredibly perceptive, and leaders of men. Both of them prophecied at times when there were many others doing the same thing...for example, in Acts (yes, in the Bible), the Sanhedrin basically said that Jesus was just one of many doomsday prophets running around Israel at the time, and that they shouldn't bother with him. Mohamed also lived at a time of great spiritual uncertainty. It seems odd to me that somehow those two religions just HAPPENED to last for thousands of years.
In terms of FOSTERING science, Islam has traditionally been better. It was the Muslim scientists who developed algebra, and who preserved many of the ancient Greek texts. Islam currently seems to be in something of a Dark Ages, just as happened in Christianity before it was reformed.
So who knows?
synthesizer-patel 05-18-08, 03:00 PM would you like a Werthers Original?
