Is it the oil pipeline there he is looking to defend or is it something else?

Uhhhh, maybe it's the Taliban, who seems to be resurging over the past few years. But that's just me.
The fact that he wants to withdraw from a place where we never should have been in the first place, and turn around and reinforce troops in the area that has been deemed the source of the 9/11 attacks, tells me he's on the right track.

Need to create the next generation of enemies.
Anyone who knows Afghan history knows that nothing short of complete genocide will stop them.

    A bit more than cynicism

It could be that, once we strip away all the Bush-administration foul-ups, Afghanistan is the war we can reasonably justify. You know, the country that was harboring the guy who hit us in September, 2001?

I mean, sure, Bush & Co. screwed up their entry into Afghanistan, and yes, they botched the mission on several vital levels, but it is, by the general rules of world politics, the justified invasion.

I don't know, the Taliban are popular, but they don't represent everyone.

I think it's a complicated issue. I've read that the heroin trade has grown out of control since the war began, so maybe that has something to do with it. It might also be that Afghanistan's borders have opened up considerably since the war, so if we're actually going to continue to fight this thing, that's where the action is.

I'm don't want this war to continue. I'm not condoning it. I'm just offering some opinions as to why he might want to focus on Afghanistan rather than end the war there.

It should go without saying, of course, that oil plays a role in all of this. Even if Obama was acting with the noblest of intentions, I'm sure he would want to maintain whatever reserves Afghanistan has.

Good news for Canada - plans to pull of the forgotten war by the end of 2011(our commitment on paper) should be able to go without a hitch. Fuck NATO.

The pipeline route is of course a major issue, especially with Russia acting ornery and China moving up in the world,

but there's also Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and vulnerable government. The US wants a presence right next to that hazard, and a thumb on the scales.

Iraq should be able to hold together long enough for Obama to finish with Afghanistan. The country may not be controllable. But he'll find OBL and then pull out.

If not, then I guess he's going to try to control the uncontrollable.

He has to also appear tough. We are in the US in such terror of terrorists that a president has to be war-like to survive. That is why we bombed in Pakistan right after the inauguration. People were tired of the Iraq war, so he proposed sending the troops home. Fortunately, that may be possible. He is all for sending them to Afghanistan. Next, he will deal with Iran.

If we have another war, I am already against it.

They represent themselves. They use terror tactics to control the people of Afghanistan and let no education take place. They treat women like shit and kill them for the fun of it. If you think people of Afghanistan enjoy treatment like that, then you should really move there yourself to see the atrocities up close and personal.

Many Afghan people are already on our side. Also, they have been conquered in the past. The Chinese/Mongols, Persians, Greeks, etc... Russia would have wiped the floor but we stupidly stuck our noses in it.

That said, the country can be made in our image if we should so choose. Easily.

Again once the Teliban is removed there will be others to take their place. It is a historical fact that when you remove one problem another develops within a short period of time. It is a never ending story that no one should get involved with UNLESS you destroy the root of the problem which is the opium fields! Just another money pit for money to go down and into the arms dealers pockets.

Anyone ever think that if an artificial heroin could be developed, which I'm certain it could, that there wouldn't be a need for opium production. So why hasn't a synthetic drug been made yet?
