View Full Version : A light hearted anti-war CD
moggieboy 03-28-03, 06:06 PM Just in case anyone hasn't seen the MTV Europe Blacklist http://www.internalmemos.com/memos/memodetails.php?memo_id=1443 , howzabout a CD comp featuring all the tunes to piss off all yer Global Media Giants.
A 3-point starter for 10:
1 Outkast - "Bombs Over Bagdhad"
2 Pixies - "River Euphrates"
3 Blondie - "Atomic"
...?
Has it really got so pathetically Right-on that we will even see a return to the less-then-heady days of 1991, where it was Unfinished Sympathy by "Massive" (no attack).
To paraphrase Michael Moore, "Shame on you, MTV" - err on the side of ver kidz...
Moggieboy
displaced 03-28-03, 06:45 PM During the run-up to war, when there was the massive anti-war protests in London, Sky News did a montage of scenes from the day, with occasional voice-over. The whole lot was set to _Killing In The Name_ (Rage Against The Machine). Brought a smile to my face. The only bits they faded down and voice-overed were the "F*ck you I won't do what you tell me" lines.
But yeah - if you're compiling a list, pretty much every song Rage have made would be on it.
Oh, and for those who might like:

joerhaq 03-28-03, 07:23 PM umm. totally. "Heaven is Falling" and "Fertile Crescent" by Bad Religion probably have their place on there. It's funny when they call George Bush (I) King George.
cptchipjew 03-28-03, 11:14 PM Ah, what a great discussion about Acquisition.

Phew. Thanks for putting a lid on that before it got dangerously out of control!
Oh, the humanity!
cptchipjew 03-29-03, 06:00 AM Your inherent sarcasm suggests I'm for the war, and I'm most certainly not.
But the fact remains. It's an Acquisition board.
displaced 03-29-03, 06:12 AM :m:
Nah - didn't mean to imply that at all (not sure how that got read into it, really)
It just made me grin that a single thread containing a whole three posts was worthy of an OfftopicAlarm(tm).
That's some good pre-emptive action :D
But you're right- this thread would probably be more at home on one of the other SciForums boards (which are pretty interesting - I'd not known they existed before using Acq). I was going to mention such a move in my post, but I didn't think it my place to meta-moderate.
(No more replies to this thread coming from me, since we're heading down a slippery slope that has been well-travelled by message-boards the universe over).
:m:
cptchipjew 03-29-03, 06:15 AM Woops, sorry ;)
JOHANNsebastianBACH 04-01-03, 04:07 AM i'll bet, since all of you are against the war, you also are the kind of hippy protesters that want to feed the world and save the children from child labor and crap like that. And since you are protesting in favor of saddam, you probably dont know that he orderd the exicution of 371 curdish children. either you dont know this or you hippys dont care about curdish children.
Whyatt Thrash 04-01-03, 05:50 AM 4) Blow up the outside world - Soundgarden
5) Fight Song - Marilyn Manson
6) Eternal Life - Jeff Buckley
7) Boom - System of a Down
8) All or None - Pearl Jam
9) We need a Resolution - Aaliyah
:D

Being anti-war doesn't mean being pro-saddam, nor being hippies. This war is BS and we all know it. The US couldn't care less about the irakien people if it wasn't for the oil.

how do you know? You must work at the pentagon or something. you have no clue. for what ever reason you are using the war to protest against the government that and you hav no proof that this is over oil. the oil is going to belong to the iraqi people you HIPPIE.
Whyatt Thrash 04-02-03, 08:28 AM Lol!
Hey! Stop being so harsh, square! Like uhh, fight the establishment, uhh, dude... Like, don't be such a tool. You used to be cool! What happened, man?
:D
Bach, you behave as if promoting Peace, Love and Understanding would be a Bad Thing. You must really be mad at the world...
jannuss 04-02-03, 09:51 AM Maybe what upset JSBach is the title of this thread: "light hearted anti-war" is an oxymoron if there ever was one.
Sitting here about 1.5msec off the edge of an 1991 Scud missile flight path [four homes were destroyed in the next suburb] I'm a little closer to this issue than most of you. Believe me, there is nothing light hearted about it.
Let me be quick to add that I'm probably more seriously anti-war than most of you, as well. The operative word here is "serious."
Enjoy making fun of George W. -- it's a great indoor pastime -- but war? Nothing funny about it.
Janet
Ok, so I was running Acq the other day when it just totally bombed on me and I don't have any idea why ..............................oh. sorry, wrong thread.
:m:
theonlyguyever 04-02-03, 10:13 PM Check out the lyrics to the new Boy Sets Fire album, Tomorrow Come Today. There's a lot of anti-war themes running through that one.
one of the best protest songs ever, Masters of War, by the great Bob Dylan
reformedtopunk 04-03-03, 10:24 PM anything by Anti-Flag. These songs particulary relate to the middle east
911 for peace
Outbreak
You've Got To Die For The Government
As already mentioned, SOAD and Rage.

I am not mad at the world. Things said in these forums don’t carry any emotion, or sometimes can be misinterpreted. I’m not a mad person. I am a musician and that is what makes me happy. I play classical guitar. I also know much information about this war, and it is not over oil, people should know by now. I believe even if Saddam never had any kind of chem. bio weapons we still should have gone in and executed him when he ordered the execution of 371 Kurdish children. Why dont you hippie protesters protest against the murder of these children? Please tell me why? You all want love and peace yet you are OK with Saddam’s orders to murder children and his civilians.
cptchipjew 04-11-03, 02:49 AM Well, we've done plenty of bad things in the US to make it look like we are up to something.
Although we usually do drop food on a country after we demolish it ;)

So please tell me, why didn't the US intervene then?
The operative factor behind this war is oil. It's naive to believe otherwise.

First of all, being against war is not being a hippie. Second: I never said I was against the war to begin with. You're jumping to conclusions like a blind man in a chopper with no chute. Third: Yes, it IS hypocritical to "choose" to protest just because one of the biggest nation in the world are performing atrocities, and not just any big country. But at least anti-war hippies are honest about their purpose.
I'm neither for nor against this war. I'm appaled by the suffering the war causes, the children with severed legs, the families that have lost their fathers, mothers, children...
But like you said, if Saddam's rule is the alternative... It's a complicated moral issue. I'm not wise enough to be able to take a firm stand on it.
I just wonder if the next government will be any better. Whether it be some clan leader, kurds or american...

at first i seemes to want to strangle you for your comment but twards the end you prove to not be an antiwar protester with out a cause. that was an inteligent comment, and i respect your opinion. yes indeed it is a compicated moral issue.

Jeez man, you need to get off your anger-trip.
Like, start yoga or something. Wanting to strangle people for having opinions is not healthy.
I don't mean this is any down-putting way. Your attitude seems like it's not gonna benefit anyone, least of all yourself.
