Okay, you guys had a hand in how the cover came out. Now you can take a peek at what's inside. I've included the prologue and first chapter. The final version should look pretty much like this. Enjoy. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Edit: Oh, yeah ... click on the cover for the sample!
A blastocyst isn't a shapeless form, but I guess the character is a psychologist, so it can be forgiven he doesn't know these things.
The book is off to the printer, which means I'll have a proof copy in my hand within a week or so, and the book will be available for purchase in two weeks or so. I set up a page on my site to take pre-orders for anyone that wants a signed copy. I'm selling them for less than retail, since I get such a discount on them. The total is less than $14, which can't be beat for a story this good, signed and personalized and delivered to your door. http://www.hughhowey.com/?page_id=1124/
Now I'm wondering what kind of species they are. I know it says "packed full of...humans". But human might also be what any other alien race refer to themselves as. The psychological effects of your a life subject to the flip of a coin, and what it breeds within a closed colony, sounds interesting. Nice teaser.
Swivel, I think your definitely giving too much info for the first page. ie. The fact that there are thousands of such "coins". It makes it sound like this is just another story. If I were you Id wait until the end of the 1st or beginning of the second. For the first several pages you want to center the entire first chapter onto your cast and your background and in all practicality shut off everything from the outside. also, in the third paragraph and second sentance, another way you may want to word the ending is instead of saying an "even game of chance" say a "unfair game of even chance". And with that one word you introduce the theme of chance, of luck, and of fairness into your novel.
I like the "unfair." That's a great idea. I know the intro seems like a bit much of an info dump, but there is a very calculated reason for that. It entails who the book is "written to." I think readers will find themselves absorbed by the characters and story very quickly, and when they get to the end, they will see how it all ties together. I'm working on the e-book version right now. I hope to have it up at the Kindle store, iPad, Nook, Sony, etc... this week. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

Cool. I have a small shipment of books heading my way right now. These are mainly for reviewers, but if I have any left over, I'll be sending them to the people that pre-ordered. I can't wait to hear what you guys and gals think of this book.
