Karnataka, trying to engineer a biotechnology boom on the back of its software strength, is set to witness a jump in investments in the sector this year, industry officials said on Monday.

BANGALORE: "We are going to see an investment of Rs 3 billion which have been announced by companies (in the year ahead)," said Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairman of the Biocon research company and the head of a biotech panel set up by the state government.

Mazumdar, who was speaking at the inauguration of an annual showcase for the emerging industry, Bangalorebio.com, said the figure compared with a cumulative Rs 5 billion the state had attracted over the past 10 years.

Karnataka, whose capital is the technology city of Bangalore, has 72 biotechnology companies employing around 3,500 scientists, Mazumdar said. Eleven new firms started last year.
