News: Karnataka, trying to engineer a biotechnology boom on the back of its software strength, is set to witness a jump in investments in the sector this year, industry officials said on Monday. BANGALORE: "We are going to see an investment of Rs 3 billion which have been announced by companies (in the year ahead)," said Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairman of the Biocon research company and the head of a biotech panel set up by the state government. Mazumdar, who was speaking at the inauguration of an annual showcase for the emerging industry, Bangalorebio.com, said the figure compared with a cumulative Rs 5 billion the state had attracted over the past 10 years. Karnataka, whose capital is the technology city of Bangalore, has 72 biotechnology companies employing around 3,500 scientists, Mazumdar said.
