I hope that got somebody's attention. Anyway, where does all of the money from the lottery come from? Why don't they use it to improve on things rather than give it out? Or are they giving it back? I just don't know. Where is that picture? You sick, sick person.

Political hangups

The initial money comes from an investment by the taxpayers in American state lotteries. From there, ticket revenues contribute to the coffers while the pay schemes (20 years) allow the money to build additional interest.

In many states the money is supposedly earmarked for education, but it most of those it is squandered on other things, though someone once pointed out that the entire year's lottery profits couldn't run a major school district for a year.

That last paragraph is largely anecdotal. Real research might tell a different story.

Good question.........any takers?

Yours truly used to sit watching the Price is Right with her grandmother wondering the same things. Where does all that money come from? Can't be the show's since they'd be in a shit hole by now. My guess is corporate money and sponsors.

Bigshot corporations shareholding lottery stock or something somewhere by someone.
I totally don't get economics and I've failed accounting like twice sooooooo.........................I................DON"T...........KNOW.

Your part right. But in the case of Who Want's To Be a Millionaire, they have insurance. Game shows actually pay insurance, so when someone hits that jackpot, the insurance company has to cough it up.

Naughty, Naughty... Don't Mess With The Pre-Vert's Minds!!

I half expected to see some grotesquely bloated specimin flaunting her flab for all to see...
(Not that that is not in it's own way simply bay-oo-ti-ful - albeit not in my lexicon - we wouldn't want it to be thought that your friendly neighborhood Killjoy was an "exclusionist" bastid!)

Anyhow.... The lottery...

Well, one presumes the money they give out for prizes is some portion of what they take in in ticket sales...
Ever stand behind some ya-hoo in a convenience store check out line when all you want is a pack of chewing gum or a sodee-pop and they are blowing $50-100 on verrrry specifically thought out combinations of numbers which some book they bought informed them might somehow be chosen in a less random fashion than the plain old ordinary randomly chosen numbers?
They get LOTS of ticket sales...

Now, the fun part....
What portion of the "take" is given out a prizes I don't know...
The balance, which is supposed to be lots more, is supposed to be used to "improve on things", as you said.
Well, I live in New York State, and our lottery money is supposed to be used for the education system....
HAW HAW HAW!!!!!!
"SOOOOOOOOO NOT HAPPENING"
I don't know about elsewhere, but it seems most of the "education" money gets flushed down the toilet as govt waste & pork-barrel projects of the sort that allow state legislators & senators to put something that sounds good on the silly little newsletters they send out (at taxpayer expense) to inform you of all their recent "good works" at election time...

This sad tale in no way prevents me from plunking down a buck or two when the jackpots get up to the tens of millions, though...(see, if no one wins, they roll over the jackpot into a bigger one next drawing! )
Because, as the NY state lottery slogan says: "You Never Know..."

Here in Florida, I heard that the lottery money actually comes from the people who buy the tickets. For example, if 500,000 people buy lottery tickets at $2 a piece, there is a million dollars.

That is why, if no one wins it for a long time, the payout amount just keeps going up (I think the all time high was around 75 million)

In Florida they claim they have given over 10 billion dollars to education since the late 80's as a result of the lottery. However my mom is a teacher and believes that is highly untrue. And if they have, they've just gotten all of the money back by withdrawing large amounts from public school funding from the Florida goverment.

Lotteries are primarily funded by the people who buy the tickets.

Who wants to be a Millionaire is funded by all the people who phone up trying to get on the show. It is also funded by the advertisers who pay for air time during the show. They give away far less money than they get in, even if somebody occasionally gets the million. The remainder goes to the TV network.

Just a quick question: Has anyone ever seenan empty seat on the Price is Right? I mean that show has been on a hella long time, and it still manages to receive a full audience and a few hours a day on network television. It's AMAZING!

Yeah, lotteries and game shows are old hat. Is anyone entering for the Pepsi Billion Dollar contest? Did anyone read the legal stuff about it?

If I remember everything right at 2:50am after waking up in teh middle of the night... they have an insurance company putting up the Billion if someone wins it. The Odds work like this: 1000 people will be on a TV show after being selected from entries. One person out of the 1000 people will win the $1000000 prize and have a chance for the Billion dollar prize. They have a 1/1000 chance of winning that one. So your odds of winning if you make it to the final 1000 are one in a million (literally) of winning the billion. I think those odds are funny, but I still really want to see that prize awarded (especially to me).

So I don't know where I was going with that... it's late. If anyone wants to see the rules here they are.
