9/11 is upon us. How do YOU plan to celebrate this day?

While speaking to a fellow denizen in a language arts class, he mentioned to me that he thought there should be 'no homework on 9/11.' I quickly whipped out my sarcastic-o-meter and jokemometer but found nothing, he was dry and speaking his mind to me. Opposed to this, as I am any celebration of a day when so many people died, I referred to him the point of a date beyond him, that is, December 7. I said that this day was compared to 9/11 on countless occasions. He hadn't a clue as to what I was talking about. Do YOU know what happened on December 7?


Pearl Harbor was bombed! I told this to him, and his reply was:
'not as many people died at Pearl Harbor.'

(sighs)

THIS is a PERFECT, CRYSTALLINE snapshot of the american psyche. Celebrate death (officially, of course), celebrate misery on the part of countless thousands or millions. Make sure absolutely that everyone knows how awful things were, let them relive things they probably at one time tried to forget or at least cope with in their own way. AND MOST OF ALL: THE BIGGEST DISASTERS EQUAL THE ABSOLUTE BEST HOLIDAYS!

I guess from this, you could guage my opinion (on my hefty opinionomometer) on the very subject. YES, mourn the loss, YES, honor the innocent deaths, BUT DON'T MAKE A F*CKING PARTY OUT OF IT. What do you tend to do on holidays that guarantee you a day off from work or school? Mourn those it was meant to celibrate? Ha! I spend most of my time, oddly enough, in front of my computer screen, gaming my brains out or writing. This is what holidays do. They disrupt our lives and completely take away the purpose that they were probably originally meant for.

Those that were affected directly or indirectly will remember it their own way with friends, relatives, themselves, whatever, but this huge media frenzy going on, the hysterics...urrrr...all of it, just way way way too much. If you care, then do so, but I get the feeling (from my example above) that some people only do it because others do as well, or seek to gain from the holiday (like having no homework). Suddenly it's popular to give a shit.

I dont believe in memorial either. People say i'm rude. I tell them its not a day we should remember. We should learn from it etc, but not have a memorial day and all that. I dunno, its just what i feel. Don't think i'm a bad person because of it

I plan to light a candle and remember that day. I plan to hang my flag and wear my red-white-blue colors. I plan on a moment of a silence at the times of the planes hitting the buildings. I plan on calling my family that is serving in this so-called-war that is amongst us to give them my love. I plan on being extra nice to ordinary citizens and going down to the local firestations and making a donation. I plan on giving the waitress an extra big tip. I plan on listening to all of my favorite CDS. I plan on buying a bouquet of nice smelling flowers and bring them into the office. I plan on smiling all day long and giving everyone the benefit of the doubt without getting upset. I plan on making an extra yummy dinner and letting my daughter stay up late while I phone everyone I know to tell them I love them. I plan on letting my daughter get a tummy ache from letting her eat an extra dessert

I plan on letting the irritating coworker babble on and watch her smile, just because she knows someone is listening. I also plan on making a point not to let the road rages get to me or the people that dont return my smiles or my hellos. I plan on sending out funny and uplifting emails to everyone I know.
Basically Im just planning on making it through one more beautiful day with the people that I love and return my love, because you never know if this will be the last. As we learned from so many people one year ago tomorrow.

Contemplation?

As I recall, didn't Poppy Bush once get the date of Pearl Harbor wrong while speaking to the press? As I recall, he was a day early.

In general: I have no plans do anything special to commemorate 9/11.

If I raise a glass to the dead, I have done this before.

If I remember them at 4:20 with a phat bowl in my pipe, I have done this before.

I look at it a little like a schoolboy fight on one level: Tomorrow is another day. Do we move forward, or keep crying?

However, I will make this recommendation. After a year of examining and crying and asking "Why", people still haven't figured out a few basic ideas. Thus, I propose:

• Take a moment to yourself. Think about the tragedy and what has happened. Now think about why it happened. Don't think about the news, and the people who say it was unjustified and without cause. Think hard on all the things the United States has done as a nation during your life. Do you agree with them all? Why do you disagree? Now, think about other people who don't agree with us. What possible reason could they have? If we go with the news, the answer is that they are just bad people. So don't go with the news, come up with an answer on your own. Sympathize for a couple of minutes with our enemies, burrow through the rhetoric and try to see if there's any emotional response there. Should it occur to you that the United States bears any responsibility for its actions, that such actions should have caused any harm, try to sympathize for a moment as if you were in the same place. Attempt to feel genuine anger at the US, and hold onto that sentiment long enough for it to scare you. Now: return to your normal self. Go on with the patriotism, the nationalism, the just anger. You have just given yourself a gift: a chance to understand that anger. A chance to compare the context of your anger to the "enemy". You don't have to believe that "they" were right. You don't have to believe that "they" had cause. But now that you've tried to grasp it from "their" point of view, I would wonder if the patriotism and American spirit seems quite as genuine. Has this hurt the US? No. It has given you compassion and understanding and a possible foothold on scaling the mountains of dead in quest for peace.

Internationals, of course, are out of the loop on that one, but I think many of them know what I'm after with it.

9/11 is not a day to raise angers needlessly. What happened has happened, and while it's well and fine to say we'll do something about it, nobody can promise that it won't happen again. Understanding the enemy is a basic principle in combat outside the West. Understanding the reasons 9/11 happened is one of the biggest steps we can take as a nation and also as a world community toward making sure it doesn't happen again.

Okay, one last note: last year, on 9/11, coming home from work after the city shut down, I did two things specifically. One was to start cramming intoxicants into my brain, the other was to listen to Roger Waters' The Bravery of Being Out of Range:

And then I went to the nearest Irish bar, stepped into the somber room, looked at the tattooed bartender and shared a moment of emptiness with her. Then I nodded, and she poured, and the afternoon went on.

I might, just for the hell of it, do that again. It's been a while since I was miserably drunk about anything.

For various reasons I find myself miserable, and am unable to get myself hammered. 9/11 included, but not necessarily the chief reason.

Oh please dont! You dont know how far my agony is extended. But I am, and am pleased to say (just because Im not that sweet of a person) smiling like a star and letting everyone know how great of a day it is!
