I think a big part of being a top-notch scientist is to have one's own bright ideas. If he hasn't already got several things bouncing around in his head that he's just dying to do, then he isn't much of a scientist.

i never said he was smart, nor much of a scientist

DONT LET him give up because he is young and ignorant.....

we all start that way... and some never improve.

anyway... batteries are always good... a fuel cell is better.
experiments with pv=nrt is always fun... rockets and stuff.

electronics is real cool... but hard to display.. unless you are very discriptive with alot of posters and stuff.

but if you really want to win the show.... build a small tesla coil, and you cant lose..... but.. its not a toy.. it can kill.

but building it willl teach him alot more than anything else he could build.

but since hes just a kid... a battery is probubly a good way to go.

i would build several kinds of batteries, plus a half cell for discussion purposes.

BATTERY SCIENCE isnt hard... but youll need some better books than his school is likely to have... i recommend the library and used book stores.
not new book stores... unless you have alot of money to throw around.

Reminds me of the kid that tried to build a nuclear reactor in his mothers' shed.

That was quite a resourceful and dedicated guy. It's almost admirable what he did.

I don't know if the same applies to you guys, but in the elementary school where my kids went it was manditory for each kid to enter the science fair as well as participate in 4H (I always thought it was voluntary,but then again you have to know this school that I am talking about) Anyhooo, My son won first place with his project and it was really easy. He had 5 little starter plants and played music to each of them for an hour a dayl
1 Country
2 Rock
3 Classical
4 Oldies
5 Test plant (no music)
He measured the growth on all the plants and then concluded that if you play rock music to your plants everyday, they will grow bigger.

PS: he named each plant accordingly
Country = Waylon
Rock = Angus
Classical = Mozart
Oldies = Travolta (Saturday Night Fever reference)
Test plant = Newman (Steinfield reference = about nothing)

PSS: it was cool to see what all the other parents did for their kids Science Fair project too. ;)
